I was hoping for the album to stop sliding and hold its sales around 40-45k, but it experienced another 25% drop. Now at 36k At this stage, it does not appear that ABOY is helping to stabilise sales. It is still doing o.k in terms of comparison to ATYCLB chart positions. I hope next week it can hold in the top 25.

In this same week back in 2001, ATYCLB was in its 12th week with sales of 57,000 copies at position #19. Ironically ATYCLB was at #22 in its 9th week, just as the "BOMB" is at #22 for its 9th week this week. If ATYCLB's 57,000 number had been Bomb's numbers this week, BOMB would have come in at #7, inside the top 10! Clearly the market right now is much weaker than it was 4 years ago.

The market is weak right now, but I was hoping BOMB could maintain a higher sales level and the drops would level off. Another 25% decrease for next week would put the album at 27,000 in sales for its 10th week. ATYCLB did not drop to that point until its 28th week.

Hopefully, The Grammy's, a new tour, and the Hall Of Fame awards will give the album the boost it needs. The HALL OF FAME awards always give the artist that appear on it a boost.

Yes, the market is ridiculously weak. Those who watched HITS throughout the year before U2's album probably saw this. Sales did increase early on, but then fell. We were spoiled by the monstrous sales the holiday season produced. But if you look at the #2 album, it didn't even clear 100K in sales.

Right now, it appears ABoY is getting off to a slow start - not a bad start, just slow. It's slowly moving up the Modern Rock charts. It's slowly moving up the Mainstream Rock charts. I think it'll take a while longer before it finally breaks through.

This is where U2's management team should be kicking in high gear. Notice the success Green Day is having with their second single. Notice the success Kelly Clarkson is having with her second single. Where is the publicity for U2's second single? Why isn't this song getting more of a push on radio? Lately, I've really disagreed with U2's management. It seems they did many things right for ATYCLB, and they started off spectacularly for HTDAAB. But now, they are slipping. Fiascos with U2.com memberships then presale ticket purchases, combined with the lack of promotion for ABoY is making me wonder what's going on.

Oh well, at least HTDAAB is still selling reasonably well. Perhaps by the time U2 make their Grammy appearance, ABoY will have finally gathered enough steam to be heard more consistently on the radio. That double whammy could propel the album back up the U.S. charts.

The rest of the Billboard & Video charts for week 8/9

Guess you have to subscribe to Billboard.com just to see the same info that was free last week. Anyway, U2 continues with moderate success on MTV and VH-1, with All Because of You entering MTV's weekly top 20 countdown this week at 20. It's also marked as a "TRL" top 5 pick on multiple dates...don't know them...but I am shocked. Guess the whole MTV jammed thing should mean more MTV exposure...

Vertigo drops from 11-12 on the "Rock" Top 20 countdown" on MTV2. It also continues to hang in the Top 20 on VH-1's weekly countdown at #15.

Vertigo is not on last week's playlist for MTV or MTV2, but ABOY is in the Top 30 for both.

"ABOY" is gaining ground, folks......extra airplay on both of the rock formats....it's just that a lot of the tracks ahead of it are getting a ton of plays......"Vertigo" is still incredibly strong on mainstream rock radio, and it's still picking up plenty of plays on the alternative format as well........once a few more stations start phasing it out, "ABOY" will get the boost it needs to jump into the Top 100....

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

ABoY should be getting a monstrous push now. Yet it's still not in the Hot 100, it actually dropped a notch on the Mainstream Rock charts and is already stagnating on the Modern Rock charts! Hello? U2's marketing? U2's management? Focus! If you want this album to make $$, start pushing this song. Don't let it turn into another "Elevation" or "Walk On" - two wasted opportunities, IMO.

Chart junkie

Soldatti,

I like your historical format, it's just that I have some extra money since I'm going to miss my first U2 show since 1987. I'm not pissed about what happened Tuesday...there are so many more important things in life...like getting comprehensive chart data!

Anyway, I just joined BB online on the month-to-month basis with a very basic $9.95/mo membership, and yet I still get way more info than I need. It's interesting. If you're ever going to be gone again, we now have another paying member who can at least cover all the chart data.

I include the video data because I really think it can make a difference. I remember BD getting the most spins back in 2000 between MTV and mtv2 of any song, and we know how well it did. Vertigo got ipod spins, which did help buy it a one-time shot of support (I hope).

Dr. Who, all ABOY chart positions are getting increased airplay, and when you actually see the Mainstream Rock Track Chart, despite the drop, it really does appear that Vertigo is handing off the batton to ABOY right about now. It's cool seeing U2 at #22 and #23 on a major chart with two different songs (not different versions of the same song, either).

I also recall Vertigo taking a few steps back here and there before leaping forward. Since MTV sponsored the ABOY video, it's in their rotation, getting on TRL (when has that ever happened sans a live performance?). and it debuted in their top 20 video countdown last week. Vertigo is STILL hanging around both video channels "top 20", but with no spins at all on MTV last week. It's done.

Why all this about videos? Like I said, BD got tremendous video exposure, for whatever reason. Maybe it's because U2 don't normally put much $$$ into their video's and they suck (outside of ZooTV/Zooropa era), but that BD run was a very unusual video success story for them. In 2004, guess what video got the most spins? Green Day's American Idiot.

Anyway, here's to hoping that ABOY is just getting started due to Vertigo's staying power, and that it will also have a terrific video run.

Lets remember that when it comes to radio, there is only so much the bands management can do. It takes more than good management and money to have a good run in the HOT 100.

It's great that you're here, now we have another source for the weekly charts.
I'll post my weekly updates because is good to see the chart runs but you can fell free to add information.
Two sources, better than nothing!

There is the Chartsplus subscription (http://www.chartsplus.co.uk) but I haven't looked good enough to see how much it compares to Billboard.

thanks but chartplus doesen't supply sales figures...so i was looking for a service that provides sales figures for UK: i'm considering to pay a month-by-month subscription to provide sales data for UK here if it isn't too expensive (just like the bb service)

Hello,

This is another week where I am late with the Dutch chart news (although the raw results have been posted yet). During the week I was quite busy (also at night) and yesterday, when I finally had some time, I wasn't feeling very well. Luckily I feel much better today. But enough about me, it's the charts that are important! The charts are compiled by the Mega Charts (http://www.megacharts.nl) although I have also found another link with some interesting results. More about that one later.
On the album charts, How To... drops yet another position. Not much to report about it. The new single Sometimes You Can't... is getting some airplay, but not too much (at least, I haven't heard it that much) but hasn't been released yet. So not much promotion from that one. The Dutch tour dates haven't gotten on sale, so no extra press from that angle either. So as I said more or less last week, although the album is slowly sliding down, it is still in the top 10. It's also dropping really slow. And that isn't bad at all.
Here is the chart run for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (27-11-2004)
1-1-2-3-4-4-5-6-7

Last week I said that:
Not published to the general audience there's also a sales only list. At times I may be able to get some info from it, but I fear not too often.
Well, I think I just found a link to a site that does publish those sales-only charts. Its link is http://www.top40web.nl/ if you want to check it out. I will mention Vertigo's chart run on this chart at the end. As for Vertigo itself, it refuses to leave the charts. Yes, it did drop in its tenth week, but only one position! By having also the results of the sales chart as a comparison, I do notice that its longlevity is mostly due to airplay.
The chart run for Vertigo (13-11-2004)
2-3-3-10-13-18-21-23-23-24

The chart fun for Vertigo on the sales-only chart (13-11-2004):
2-3-5-12-14-20-23-25-23-31
39

The one week difference is due to the fact that the sales-only chart was published between Christmas and New Year, while the regular chart wasn't (they had their end-of-year chart).

The current #1 album is Hotel New York by Anouk. It's her 7th week at the top. This week the difference between #1 and #2 is the smallest difference ever, with only 0.99% separating Hotel New York from Blöf's Het Eind Van Het Begin (their Best Of collection). The current #1 single still is Als Je Iets Kan Doen by Artiesten Voor Azië, a charity single for the victims of the tsunami.

C ya!

Marty
