Mediabase 24/7 has updated their airplay charts for last week. Here's how U2 is doing on the airwaves based on radio play from this company and time frame, which is April 4-10.

This radio monitoring company shows that the overall trend of Sometimes making a slow move up the charts continues on. The HAC chart, similar to the Adult Top 40 on BB, is a slow mover, anyway. The jump on Rock Stations is good, and the performance on Triple A and Alternative is on par with most other chart monitoring systems. Mediabase surveys a certain number of radio stations and reports results based on those radio stations included...there is no extrapolation or estimate of "total" airplay - it shows the specific results from those surveyed, which they feel is statistically sound in terms of chart position, anyway.

Other radio and Amazon charts

Here's the Amazon comparison, and I included the "most popular" sales location for albums if listed. The tour is definitely helping U2's back catalog.

The 2nd chart of the week has been updated, the MGB Top 40. Sometimes debuted two weeks ago just outside the Top 40 at 46...last week it rose 10 spots to 36. This chart measures song success in the midwest, not exactly U2's strongest area but better than you might think. It's up again this week.

More radio play updates in U.S.

Mediaguide has just updated radio play through Sunday, April 10.

Alternative:

Sometimes rises from 35 to 31 with a bullet (like other charts, the song declined a few positions last week but seems to be rising again).

Hot AC

Sometimes rises from 22 to 20 with a bullet
Vertigo slips from 40 to 41

Mainstream Rock

ABOY RISES from 37 to 29 with a bullet
Vertigo slides from 31 to 35
Sometimes rises from 46 to 43 with a bullet

Triple A

Sometimes rises from 3 to 1 with a bullet (and large lead)
Vertigo rises from 47 to 40 with a bullet :applaud:

Vertigo's staying power is amazing, and even ABOY got a nice bump in Rock Airplay. It appears that U2 is getting increased airplay for all three N.A. singles lately, maybe because of the tour, but their main hit single for now, Sometimes, continues it's ascent on the charts, albeit slow and steady. This is the most recent airplay data, and it's positive, so we'll await the Radio & Records update later this week (and BB) to see if these trends continue.

On the mediaguide album chart, which simply tallies ALL SONGS played from a particular album, HTDAAB rises from 14 to 5 on Triple A/Rock. Also, HTDAAB re-enters the Pop Top 50 at 45 with a bullet and an increase in 700 plays. HTDAAB peaked at 16 on this chart when Vertigo was at 31 on the BB Hot 100...at that time, I'd say Vertigo accounted for 95% of U2 song play on "Pop" formats off of HTDAAB.

The fact that the album comes in at 45 this week could mean that Sometimes has made a decent rise on the BB Hot 100 this week, although Vertigo has been rising on the BB Pop 100 for 4 weeks now...from 66 to 52...and it's up to 10 on BB Hot 100's "most played recurrents", so both songs are responsible for the album rise on this airplay chart. I'm hoping Sometimes gets into the 85 range on the BB Hot 100...maybe that's a stretch, but we'll see.

Hi beLIEve! Is the above information correct? Because the math doesn't add up.

No, thanks for the heads up. The total numbers for HAC at #17 is 1359 spings TW, 1318 spins LW, for a difference of +41.

Thanks!

Couple of updates...

MTV just updated their Top 20 video charts, and U2 proved it should have some staying power as it maintained it's position of #5 in just it's 2nd week.

In Canada, Jam has updated the Singles Airplay Only Top 100, and U2 is doing quite well on this chart, which is more important than the single sales chart. Here's how U2 fared on the Airplay chart:

Sometimes rises one spot to 9
ABOY slides six spots to 46
Vertigo rockets from 91 to 78!

I presume Vertigo's resurgence in N.A. is due to the tour, perhaps even the tour name, but it's impressive anyway. With Sometimes solidly in the Top 10 in airplay and sales, I hope we see a bump in albums sales in Canada. If only Sometimes could crack to Top 10 on the BB Hot 100...then I think we'd see a significant increase in album sales. It's got a long way to go, though.

Soldatti - Excellent post's (and very quick). Shame the sales for 'the bomb' are so far below HITS (seems to be a very small week for sales on the whole chart). Still, at least it does go back into the Top 40 - so overall I'd say a good result.

I suppose I should say - Thank-you very much 'Sir'.

Thanks Soldatti! It appears to me that this shortened 1st leg is not going to boost sales significantly...perhaps it might when it hits the Northeast. From June through August, though, U2 must have a hit single to just maintain a 20K sales level/week, as so much of HTDAAB sales were frontloaded in the U.S. Sometimes still has a chance to make an impact, but a well promoted version of COBL, which IS the next single, might have to carry the summer. Personally, I'd like U2 to release L&POE between COBL and OOTS like they slipped ABOY in there...and then hit the states with OOTS on the radio giving way to Miracle Drug for the Christmas/Grammy home stretch.

I'm not sure how consistent week to week sales will be, but I still think HTDAAB is on pace to outsell ATYCLB here in the U.S. and worldwide by next March at the earliest.

The more I read inside BB about how P2P and other downloading piracy has affected the industry, the more I'm impressed with U2's performance. U2 are regularly mentioned as being on of the most "pirated" artists. As of tomorrow's charts, CD sales are down 9% so far this year compared to 2004. Total CD sales are now off some 30% from 2001/2002 levels. It's simply not accurate to compare HTDAAB's sales to ATYCLB as "apples to apples", and yet HTDAAB will likely still pass it in total sales. Pretty amazing performance.

U2 promotions

FYI,

It looks like U2 are scheduling some promotional appearances, which we know can help album sales. First, airing tommorow, we have

VH1's All Access: Spotlight U2

After a three-year absence from the spotlight, U2 is rocking the world and VH1 is catching up with the super group. After selling 180 million albums and winning 17 Grammy's, the band is as relevant today as they were in the 80's with their mega hit Joshua Tree. Now, after releasing their 11th new album "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, the band is preparing for their highly anticipated world tour and VH1 is with them every step of the way. From their rehearsal in Rosarito, Mexico, to the dress rehearsal in Vancouver to opening night in San Diego only VH1 gets the inside scoop on U2.

This show airs tomorrow at 5 PM Est, 8 PM Est, Friday the 15th at 11:00 AM Est, and again on Monday Morning at 2:30 AM Est. After that, VH1's schedule is as reliable as Ticketmaster during the 1st presale.

2nd, Good Morning America begins their "Summer Concert Profiles" on May 20th, featuring a different band on tour each week. The May 20th episode, scheduled for 8:15 AM, kicks off with U2's Vertigo Tour. The show usually features live interviews with the band and live performances. Right now, however, it says there will be "live broadcasts" of at least 5 songs from U2, so who knows how this show will work.

Anyway, as with ATYCLB, I wouldn't mind see U2 play Leno and Letterman, especially if they can promote Sometimes. I wouldn't be surprised to see them show up on more than just these two shows before they leave for Europe.

P.S. The Killers are on Leno tomorrow night playing Mr. Brightside

Here is how ATYCLB did in its first 20 weeks in the USA:

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000

ATYCLB at week 20 in the USA: 2,206,000

BOMB at week 20 in the USA: 2,632,468

Week 20 ATYCLB was at #31 with 48,000 in sales for the week.

Week 20 BOMB is at #39 with 19,386 in sales for the week.

note: the album at #31 this week sold 24,460, about half of what ATYCLB did in that same position four years ago!

ARC, or American Radio Chart, has updated and Sometims climbs 4 spots to 29 with a bullet. If you look at the chart, it is very much a Pop format, which is more indication that Sometimes still has a chance of being picked up by more mainstream or hits type radio formats making it a potentially modest cross over hit...or better. Here's the link to the chart: http://www.rockonthenet.com/charts/arc.htm

Records and Radio updates airplay charts...

Sometimes #1 "New songs most played and active", right out of Top 50

Hot AC

Sometimes holds at #17 with a bullet for increased plays

Active Rock

Sometimes debuts at 29 with a bullet
Sometimes at #3 for most increased plays

Alternative Format

Sometimes rises from 33 to 30 with a bullet

Triple A

Sometimes stays at #1 with an increase in plays
Vertigo is #4 most played recurrent

*************************************************

Records and Radio has also updated their airplay charts for Canada

Hot AC

Sometimes up to 7 with a bullet and major increase in plays

Rock

ABOY falls from 4 to 6
Sometimes climbs 3 spots to 22 with a bullet
Vertigo is #3 on "most played recurrents"

AC

Sometimes #6 on "most added stations"

Those are 3 of the 5 radio formats in Canada tracked by R&R

180 Million!!!! - Sounds a bit much to me (the most agreed figure seems to be 130-140M)

Yeah, that was cut a pasted from VH1's promo for the show. It's a bit overstated, but hey, if the figure catches on and the start getting credit for 180M albums, then who am I to correct their mistakes?

Billboard for U.S. and Canada

Billboard Week 20

Hot 100 Comprehensive Albums

HTDAAB #39 down 5
B/of 1980-90 #169 up 17
(Up to #16 on Pop Catalog)

Top Internet Album Sales

HTDAAB up from #12 to #5

Billboard Hot 100

Sometimes stays at 99 w/bullet for increased airplay :banghead:

Billboard Modern Rock

Sometimes rises 1 to 29 w/bullet

Billboard Adult Top 40

Sometimes falls 1 to 18 but w/bullet
(3rd time this has happened to the song on its very SLOW chart(s) run)

Hot 100 Recurrent Singles

Vertigo hangs in at #21, down from #10
****************************************************************
I now understand that the BB Hot 100 is the “main billboard chart” for singles, as it does reflect ALL the airplay a song is getting on ALL of radio. We know from radio charts that Sometimes is getting airplay on Rock, Adult, and the Alternative Radio Formats. It’s also getting increased airplay on the Pop format in just its 3rd week.

This song is doing very well as a video, and even if Sometimes has peaked, it still would be considered a modest hit single. Since the song seems to “stall” every other week, maybe next week it will make another move up the charts. No more predictions from me, though, as this song is anything BUT predictable. I think it’s a good song that has made a slight impact on album sales, but it may be floundering on the charts. Other opinions?
****************************************************************
Billboard has updated the rest of the Canadian charts, too.

Top 10 Singles (sales only; airplay posted earlier)

Sometimes #1
ABOY #2
Vertigo Max #6
Vertigo Single #10

Top 100 Albums

HTDAAB drops from 17 to 22

Top 50 Alternative Albums

HTDAAB down 2 to 11
B/of 1980-90 up 2 to 35

Hmm...in Canada, we have hit single(s), a tour, and yet no significant increase in album sales. Perhaps the BB article on piracy and file sharing is accurate afterall, meaning that overall CD Album sales are down 30%+ just since ATYCLB was realeased, and the problem has actually gottem much bigger in the last several months...see my earlier post.

Doesn't this mean the overall figure on BB should be higher than HITS (i.e. more than 21K)? - I thought HITS didn't include Internet album sales.

I'm not sure what Hits includes, although my guess would be that in this day and age, it DOES include download sales. I am not positive either way.

In the meantime, Billboard has also updated it's Eurocharts, and HTDAAB is at #17, down 1, on the album chart. Sometimes is down from 54 to 76 on the Singles chart.

I think 17 on the Europe chart is very good - esp as the tour has yet to hit - and when it does I hope/expect the impact on sales of Bomb will be greater than has been the case to date in the US.

Yep, Good result considering it dropped 6 places in the UK. I reckon it must still be in the Top 30 in Germany. 4 place rise in France will also have helped.

BTW - My prediction for W.21 of HTDAAB on Mediatraffic : No.20 (-14% to 80K)

The rest of Billboard...

Billboard has updated their 2nd most important singles chart, the Pop 100.

Vertigo freefalls from 52 to 79 after a 4 week surge on the chart
Sometimes debuts at 98 with a bullet!

Don't give up on Sometimes yet.

Vertigo falls from 31 to 66 on the digital songs chart, so maybe the song that never quits is ready to give way to a bigger hit...

Sometimes is too good of a song not to get into the at least the top 40 of the overall Billboard charts. Very frustrating. The rock stations in Phoenix are playing COBL more than Sometimes.

COBL

COBL has been showing up on several radio airplay charts. That's what happens when a song is released to different formats at different times (let alone entire continents). Rock got Sometimes 9 weeks ago...Mainstream radio got it 4 weeks ago. I'm sure some DJ's know COBL is the next single and they want to be able to say "you heard it here first". I don't blame them.

I say "release", but that's a stretch. It juse slowly caught on. No announcement or promo at all here in U.S.

Last update - video charts

VH1 - Sometimes rises from 10 to 9
Much Music - ABOY falls from 10 to 13
Much Music - Sometimes climbs 4 spots to 19
Much More Music - Sometimes rises 2 spots to 17
MTV - Sometimes stays at 5 in it's 2nd week

My estimate of U2s sales is approximately 143 million right now....but 180 million sounds better!
