When's the survey happening though? And when's the high court decision? Will there be enough time? And if the high court decides no can they just do it anyway (and it just becomes informal?)

The whole thing is a fucking joke, a postal survey for fuck's sake. Even if 75% of registered voters bothered to reply (and I'd be astonished if it topped 60) - quite apart from constitutional questions - that is not a 'vote' with a lot of legitimacy. Not by Australian standards, at any rate.

The High Court hears the case this week, Tuesday and Wednesday. If they rule against it, it's dead. The government could not legally spend the money and the ABS would have no authority to do anything.

If the court lets it through, the survey forms will be sent out from the week after next, with until sometime in November to return them. There is actually another legal challenge to let 16-17 year olds vote, and that won't be resolved until the survey's under way, but if it succeeds you'd then see a frantic mail-out. (I actually think it has half a chance.)

Fucking lol at all the conservative MPs being like "look at the increase we've had on the roll!" as if they're anything other than young people racing to register so they can vote yes.

Actually I think you'll find you're in the Straya thread on LS.

Lemonade Stand has been cancelled forever, and it's only appropriate, as probably none of you even remember this subforum was created so Lemonade Stand wouldn't be overrun with Radiohead talk. Oh, how the worm has turned.

RIP Walter Becker of Steely Dan :(

I never saw them live and now I never will. Fuck. I've spent as much time listening to them as I could since I moved to Los Angeles. Their music is such a wonderful fit for the vibe here and it has been a major part of my life since childhood. I don't know what else to say, really. This really fucking blows.

I feel you man, I was also really hoping to get to see them too, but now I won't. Really selfishly fucking upset too that it happened at midnight my time as well, because I have to go to sleep, I can't grieve

Holy shit, very unexpected. RIP.

Other than that, been spending time with The Verve's Urban Hymns reissue. It would have been a stellar double album if they had included all those B-sides.
Now, back to LCD.

Just got around to ordering that. The reissues of the first two albums are immense, so much great bonus material. Can't wait for this one.

i'm so pumped to listen to this. gonna try and carve out a few hours tonight and tomorrow to hear it all. i didn't order the physical box though, did you?

i'm always a little hesitant to order physical items like that because i don't want to look at everything once and then never take it out of the box again and feel like i wasted the money.

Nope, just the Super Deluxe on Apple Music. Although now that you mention it, I'm considering ordering it.

I'm obviously pretty bummed about the death of Walter Becker. 67 is still fairly young considering how many sexagenarians are putting out great music. The last Dan album was back in 2003 and I was always hoping they'd put out one final LP. Maybe they've at least written some songs that can still be recorded by Donald & Co. for posterity and be considered canon (there are already a handful of Dan songs that Walter never played on, leaving the duties to studio musicians).

Back in 2000 I was visiting back home in Chicago en route to a long Europe trip, and saw a used Steely Dan boxed set (Citizen Steely Dan) which comprised their first 7 albums. It was only $20 and despite not knowing much of their music I picked it up on a whim, I think I had read that the writer William Gibson was a fan and that sold me. I took the discs with me to Europe and spent many hours immersing myself in it, on trains and on the deck of my friend's family house on one of the Greek islands. I got him into the music too, and we often would lay out tanning, drinking beer, and playing backgammon as The Dan blasted on the stereo.

I saw them live post-reunion here in California, when they were touring with Michael McDonald, and was lucky enough to see the latter perform the background vocals with the band on Peg. Caught them again at one of their residencies at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. NYC and L.A., the two cities that formed the unusual cocktail of streetwise cynical humor with smooth, inviting vibes and melodies that represent this truly unique band.

It's been quite a ride.

If there's any justice Bono will snippet something tonight.

This one hurts. Luckily, I'd seen them on their last three Toronto dates, but they hadn't played Toronto for the past two years. In the spring they did a residency in Vegas, and then in July they were part of east and west coast shows with the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, and a few others. Becker didn't play those dates, and the only news was that he'd had a "procedure" and was recovering. In the meantime, they'd booked some UK and Irish dates, and just in the past few weeks, a handful of North American dates, including two casino shows in Ontario. The nearest was three hours from me. I hadn't gotten tickets yet, but was considering it. Alas. Fagen is currently on a solo tour (where 2/3 of the setlist are Dan songs). He has a show tonight. I wonder if it will be cancelled.

Goddamn, they made some gorgeous music. Glad they exist(ed).

Just wrote a status about it on Facebook, but I was devastated to hear of Walter Becker's passing. I'll just copy-paste straight from there:

This one really hurts. I suspect there's not a great deal of 27-year-old fans of Steely Dan, being a band more likely to be associated with our dads than us. But I have adored them for some time, in particular their absolutely tremendous 1977 record Aja, which has been firmly ensconced in my all-time top five albums for years now.

I still remember exactly the moment I fell for it. I was on a plane to Queensland and had downloaded two albums for the journey, Aja and some shitty Green Day album I never got more than five minutes of the way through. I put Aja on, and barely thirty seconds into opener "Black Cow", I was in love, it was everything I had hoped I would find in a jazz-heavy rock album.

Donald Fagen's multifaceted vocals and lyrics are pin-sharp observations of the sleazy and skeezy characters of Los Angeles and Walter Becker, who has just passed away, was the musician mastermind behind Aja's endlessly replayable compositions. The work of a perfectionist, every single was thoroughly considered, and where many, many, many artists would have completely overcooked it, Walter Becker pulled it all together and created a truly perfect record that feels like the musical equivalent of slipping into a well-worn, super comfortable couch that exquisitely matches all your nooks and crannies.

Tonight I'm spinning the record and having a drink in honour of a genius. Know that though you were not, Aja, and so many more of your songs, are timeless. RIP Walter Becker.

~

I'm not quite the fan Laz is, I've got three other records and while they're all really good none have clicked with me as soundly as Aja. But then I suspect Laz probably doesn't have one of their albums in his all-time top five.

Aja really just is that good. I'm blown away whenever I listen to it. Everything about it is just so satisfying.
