We heard the story of Bono inventing the junkie character in these two songs. That said --

Do you think the "oh God do not deny her" line means the character's wife died and he is now reminiscing in UC ?

The stone was semi-precious
We were barely conscious
Two souls too cool to be
In the realm of certainty
Even on our wedding day
We set ourselves on fire
Oh God, do not deny her

seems to link well with

I was lost between the midnight and the dawning
In a place of no consequence or company
3:33 when the numbers fell off the clock face *
Speed dialling with no signal at all

I was right there at the top of the bottom
On the edge of the known universe where I wanted to be
I had driven to the scene of the accident
And I sat there waiting for me

* the time of the accident (car crash ? overdose if she was also an addict?) referred to later in UC, and he is speed dialing to get help for his wife

Very interesting interpretation.

Further proof that this is their best lyrical album since AB.

I think it holds water, as it is consistent with what we already know, and doesnt disprove most of what we have extrapolated from the song.
