One question...

Which album do you think will sell more in TOTAL -- U2's No Line On The Horizon or Coldplay's Viva la Vida?

At this point I'm going to guess VLV because the economic recession has gotten much worse since it was released, so U2 is starting out in an environment where less and less people are buying CD's. Also, VLV had a huge global hit in its first single and the same can't really be said about Get On Your Boots.

For me, it's VLV unless NLOTH has a big hit second single.

Currently, VLV is #9 on the global chart with 76,000 copies sold last week and has to date sold more than 7 million copies. VLV's first full week on the chart saw sales of nearly 1.6 million globally.

Get "Breathe" a kickass iTunes ad, and make "Magnificent" another hit and it'll surely outsell it, if not it'll be close.

no.
Viva la vida (single) was going very very well and i don't think u2 could have a big single...(but i hope one of the new album's songs will be an apple/ipod jingle like Vertigo or Viva la vida...)

VLV single was the 2nd single, the first single wasnt a big hit

Indeed. I can't seem to recall Violet Hill being a big single. Many people also said that one was crap, etc. So it had kinda the same reaction as GOYB gets now.
Viva La Vida did become a global hit, so it U2 also has one with one of its next singles, it might be possible.
:)

But Viva la vida was a smash hit. The days that u2 have smash hits globaly (incl US) are over. The last one was Vertigo. But if they release Magnificent as the next single then maybe there is hope but I doubt it.

hard to say the days when U2 have smash hits is over, vertigo was only off the last album, its not like their last one was from the joshua tree days.

That's true. But all I was trying to say, can a next single such as Magnificent be a hit a la Vertigo? I hope it would.

If they release a huge hit single (Hello Magnificent) and it gets an iPod ad then anything is possible. Right now, my money would be on Coldplay

I don´t think it´s happening. Consider that HTDAAB was a very successful album and still was not able to match X&Y sales (last time I checked the counter was 10 million for HTDAAB and 12 million for X&Y).
I guess we will see similar results this time around, 8-9 million for Viva la Vida and 7 million for NLOTH. Hope I´m wrong though.

Wrong, it was the second single.

But no, I don't think U2 will top Coldplay's sales

I've always been under the impression that HTDAAB barely edged past X&Y. Check the wiki page. It says that X&Y has accumulated worldwide sales of 8.3 million. Atomic Bomb has 9+ million.

Magnificent can be possibly huge.

NLOTH got platinum instantly in Holland on its first day, I think that's quite an achievement!

U2 dont really need a smash hit to be close to Coldplays album however if they do get that hit I think they can outsell VLV. But if they dont oh well it doesnt bother me, as NLOTH is a way better album in my opinion.

Ill be doing my part when the album comes out here.

no X&Y global sales were about 1-2M infront of bomb. mainly due to UK sales. although this time VLV hasnt got anywhere near X&Y in UK

X&Y is the worst album I have ever heard. It is as though Chris Martin gatherd up every cliche he had ever heard and used them to create the lyrics.

I liked AROBTTH but after X&Y I coudn't force myself to listen to VLV.

With that being said I think WW sales of Line will surpase VLV over a 5 year period. (this will allow for U2 to win their 3rd album of the year award)

Not that it's the greatest source, but Wikipedia has X&Y at 8.3 million worldwide, and HTDAAB over 9 million.

Where do you find such info Galeongirl? Do you have a link? And do you know what sales (Dutch) are now, a few days later? Thanks!

Not that it's the greatest source, but Wikipedia has X&Y at 8.3 million worldwide, and HTDAAB over 9 million.

The wikipedia article is inaccurate. If you go to the mediatraffic global album chart archives, you will see that X&Y sold 7.766 million copies in 2005 under top selling albums. Then if you add up each week it was in the top 40 in 2006, it totals to about 9.3 million.

So we can safely say that X&Y sold about 9.3 million before dropping out of the top 40. I think it's safe to say that it has probably sold north of 10 million by now (after 4 years and another album) and HTDAAB has not
