Keane Outsell U2

Keane have outsold U2 as the biggest sellers in contemporary rock in the UK charts for 2004.
A New report published by the British Phonographic Industry reveals that Keane led the way with 7.2% of sales, beating U2 with 4.9% and Snow Petrol in 3rd with 4.7%. Keane’s debut album Hopes and Fears went on to be the 2nd biggest selling album in the UK albums last year with the Scissor Sisters self titled debut album outselling it by just a few copies.

The same Keane album is once again the 2nd biggest selling album so far for 2005. The top 5 from January to June is….

1 Coldplay – X&Y
2 Keane – Hopes and Fears
3 James Blunt – Back to Bedlam
5 Oasis – Don’t Believe the Truth
5 Athlete – Tourist

Of course, chances are that James Blunt may top that chart come the end of the year having spent the last six weeks at the top.

How many concert tickets has Keane sold in the UK and at what price? Whats the largest venue Keane has played in the UK?

Hey VALE,

Just thought i should say that the current updated Italian chart is actually week 38 of the Bomb. In week 37 Bomb stayed at # 10. So the last 3 weeks have been 10,10,18.

We shouldn't know the week 39 result untill tomarrow (if they haven't gone on Holiday).

Yes, you're right!
But the probles is that they haven't updated anithing for nearly three weeks (and that I had a summer holiday...) so, yesterday, i did a little mistake...
Anyway, the last update on www.fimi.it has been done only yesterday, but only whit the last two weeks charts.
Maybe today afternoon we'll have some news.

Here's the correct HTDAAB italian chart run:
HTDAAB chart run:

What's the relevance of those questions with regard to the fact that apparently Keane has sold the most albums last year (and is still selling a whole lotta albums this year)?

UK sales to date:
HTDAAB: 1,169,000 (318k this year)
SYCMOYO: 70k + 1,5k downloads
COBL: 43,3k + 15k downloads

Album sales are only one part of the equation that determines overall popularity, with the sale of concert tickets being the other. I don't see how asking the simple question should be a problem. I'm curious to know what Keane has done in terms of selling concert tickets.

I have no idea what they did concert wise.
I don't care about overall popularity either.
I do know they were the best-selling rock band in the UK last year.

I don't find it surprising that other artists have outsold U2 in 2004. First, HTDAAB was released the last week of November - essentially giving it a mere month to sell last year. The fact that it sold as well as it did is ridiculously impressive. Second, U2 has been around for 25 years. Will Keane be able to be the second highest selling act in the U.K. after 25 years? Will they even be around then?!

I'm more concerned with how long HTDAAB can stay on the charts and overall sales.

Billboard updates and COBL airplay in U.S.

Billboard has just updated this weeks charts, and since I have insomnia, I'll go ahead and post the stats...

HTDAAB rises from 158 to 150, with a sales increase indicated, on the BB Hot 200 Album Chart. 12 new entries ahead of it, and few albums got the gold background showing a sale increase.

On Billboard Radio Monitor, COBL is up one spot to #6 in spins but down on the download side of the equation.

COBL is at #50, up 1, on Mainstream Adult Top 40.

Eurocharts later...

Fantastic news. The bomb rises in the charts and has also a sales increase, that's really cool. So, it's already the third week that the bomb is rising on the BB 200 which is a very good sign for the future.

Yeah, that's great news from the US...once the 3rd leg kicks in i think it could now return to the top 100  :)

& i think Bomb may have re-hit the 7,000 mark - right Soldatti?

thx for the info Cris86...but if Bomb has sold 318K this year then it's actually sold 1,178,000 overall as it sold 860K last year.

For this year i've actually got a figure of 320K including this week (2-2,500) - does your 318K figure include this week?

Does someone know what was the position of Bomb in the UK chart this week?
And approsimately how many copies has it sold?

i'm waiting to get the info from Chartsplus...my estimate is # 80 with 2-2,500 sold (& therefore 320K so far this year)

And finally, here's the last update about italian charts:

HTDAAB 22 (18)
Another three albums are holdin' on in the top 100: Best Of 90/00 at 66, Best Of 80/90 at 68 and JT at 87.
COBL at 27 (from 20).

HTDAAB chart run:
1-1-4-5-5-6-3-3-4-8-
6-10-9-8-8-9-15-14-21-17-
16-17-17-26-33-33-44-42-41-39-
41-33-29-17-10-10-18-22-

Yay!! they're properly back in business...

...& how many do you think Bomb has now sold in Italy? this is what i've got :

350K in 2004 + 150K approx. so far this year = 500K

France:

Bomb #30 (#27)

that's also pretty good & means that Bomb should now have, more or less, reached the 400K mark in France : 290K in 2004 + 110K approx. so far this year

Well, that's definitely my opinion too.
As you know, here in Italy we haven't any official data per week; I used the numbers that somebody put here in the forum some weeks ago about France:

Week 20 - #37 - 2800
Week 21 - #41 - 2700
Week 22 - #40 - 2700
Week 23 - #59 - 1700
Week 24 - #44 - 2200
Week 25 - #38 - 2700
Week 26 - #45 - 2200
Week 27 - #45 - 2200
Week 28 - #42 - 2500
Week 29 - #47 - 1900
Week 30 - #32 - 3200
Week 31 - #35 - 2700
Week 32 - #32 - 3400
Week 33 - #23 - 4100
Week 34 - #14 - 4900

... I tried to make a "chart history" for the bomb during 2005, trying to make a parallel (I'm sure that in Italy the records market is strong as France'market, at least...).

This is the final result:

Position Copies Sold
Week 1 5 13.500
Week 2 6 12.000
Week 3 3 15.000
Week 4 3 15.000
Week 5 4 14.000
Week 6 8 10.000
Week 7 6 12.000
Week 8 10 7.500
Week 9 9 9.000
Week 10 8 10.000
Week 11 8 10.000
Week 12 9 9.000
Week 13 15 4.750
Week 14 14 5.000
Week 15 21 3.000
Week 16 17 4.000
Week 17 16 4.250
Week 18 17 4.000
Week 19 17 4.000
Week 20 26 3.000
Week 21 33 2.500
Week 22 33 2.500
Week 23 44 2.000
Week 24 42 1.850
Week 25 41 1.900
Week 26 39 2.000
Week 27 41 1.900
Week 28 33 2.500
Week 29 29 2.700
Week 30 17 4.000
Week 31 10 8.000
Week 32 10 8.000
Week 33 18 4.000
Week 34 22 3.000
215.850 (Total)

Maybe I've been a bit optimistic... but I'm definitely sure now that HTDAAB has sold in Italy during the first seven months of 2005 more than 150.000 copies and that the total number of copies since HTDAAB has been released is very close to 550.000.

VALE,

Yes, from the info that i have album sales in France & Italy are v.similar & Bomb has definitly done quite a bit better in Italy. So overall i think your figures look v.accurate. My estimate of 500K was a conservative estimate but 200K so far this year (+350K in 2004) seems v.possible to me.

I don't have U2 sales still, but the #147 album sold 6,968 copies. I guess that the Bomb is around of 6,900-6,800.
