Is this thread a covert dis of the 80s???
Today, whilst attempting to procrastinate from the test-writing assignment I should be doing, I decided to compile CD-R lists of U2 compilations for each decade, that would actually fit onto an 80-minute CD. This is the result:
1980s:
1. I Will Follow
2. Out of Control [Boy version]
3. Gloria
4. October
5. New Year's Day [album version]
6. Sunday Bloody Sunday
7. A Sort of Homecoming
8. Pride [album version]
9. The Unforgettable Fire
10. Bad
11. Bass Trap
12. Where The Streets Have No Name [single version]
13. With Or Without You
14. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
15. Running To Stand Still
16. Desire [rehearsal, from R&H movie]
17. Angel Of Harlem [album version]
18. All I Want Is You [album version]
NOTES: Studio versions only... Can't have more than 4 tracks per LP since there are several releases this decade, so I had to cut "One Tree Hill"... include "Bass Trap" to have something a bit special, and because it's frickin' the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard... cut "Tomorrow" due to time restrictions... I much prefer the R&H rehearsal of "Desire" to the released track -- it's faster, punchier, and actually has a good harmonica bit (unlike the wayward one on the master track).
1990s:
1. The Fly
2. One
3. Until The End Of The World
4. Mysterious Ways
5. Ultra Violet (Light My Way)
6. Slow Dancing [the "Stay" B-side]
7. Numb
8. Dirty Day
9. Stay (Faraway So Close!)
10. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
11. Your Blue Room
12. Discotheque [single version]
13. Staring At The Sun [album version]
14. If God Will Send His Angels [single version]
15. Gone
16. Please [single version]
17. Sweetest Thing
NOTES: Tried to elimate one more Achtung Baby song, but couldn't -- "Ultra Violet" is too good not to include, so I axed "Even Better Than The Real Thing"... I don't particularly like "Hold Me, Thrill Me", but I felt obliged to include it since it was a big international hit... prefer "Your Blue Room" to "Miss Sarajevo", as I can't stand operatic singing or Pavarotti... needless to say, the Pop-era tracks are the contemporary ones, not the 2002 (post-90s) remixes!
2000s:
1. Beautiful Day
2. Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of [acoustic version]
3. Walk On [album version]
4. In A Little While
5. Flower Child
6. Electrical Storm [William Orbit mix]
7. The Hands That Built America
8. Vertigo
9. Miracle Drug
10. All Because Of You
11. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
12. City Of Blinding Lights
13. Mercy
14. Magnificent
15. Unknown Caller
16. Cedars Of Lebanon
NOTES: Can never decide if the 'Walk On' single or LP version is better, but went with the LP version... I love "Flower Child", and put it on to have something special... All the Bomb songs are the LP versions... I despise "Get On Your Boots" and "Crazy Tonight", so needless to say they didn't make it...
