Isn´t the number of concerts for the 3rd and 4th leg too small?...15 & 17 dates. Maybe the sales were announced too soon? I was expecting at least the same number as the first two legs (20 & 24).

Remember that for Europe there are rumours for at least 5 more shows:

Zurich, San Sebastian, Torino (2x) and Roma...

And the North America leg will get some more shows too, probably.
Rumours for 2 Mexican dates and another one for Oakland maybe...

Looks like the stones are going to tour in 2010

Well, U2 will have a new record the Stones will have to smash. If the Stones keep similar (aka a little bit higher) prices, and announce it's their final tour, they'll gross so much that nobody will ever be able to beat it.

Per the UKMIX forums, Montreal 2 sold out in 30 min. U2 sold 144k tickets for both Montreal shows....72k per night!!!

^ that's amazing!

it's so weird this difference between markets.

Philadelphia, Miami, New York, all big markets and still not sold out 1 show.
Tickets for Brussels, Paris, Montreal fly away in record time...
The German shows sell really bad (what's new?)
And for Istanbul and athens you can still find GA-tickets !!!???

Well, we won't actually know the attendance per show for Montreal until the official boxscore comes out next summer. Brussels soldout fast because it has not had a show yet and the shows are taking place in a relatively small stadium. Montreal also has not had any shows yet which is why the two shows there soldout so fast.

New York has already soldout two shows in an 80,000 capacity stadium. The third show will also likely sellout, and New York will have one of the highest total attendance figures for the tour.

Paris is really incredible, but Philadelphia will probably sellout at about 75,000 as will Miami which will be the the attendance record for Florida!

So, the size of the stadium being played, plus whether or not the market has recieved any shows yet are important factors that need to be considered.

This is a bit off topic, but Taylor Swift has sold out her first stadium show in the United States at Gillette Stadium near Boston. Ticket prices were $75, $60, and $35. I think this is actually her first show ever in the state of Massachusetts. A bit unusual to have only two albums out and your first show in the state is in a football stadium that soldout within hours. Coldplay has been working hard to get to do this for nearly 10 years, sellout a stadium in the United States, but they have not been in position to even attempt that yet. She also achieves this sellout without the aid of multiple opening acts like Kenny Chesney, George Strait, and Metallica always have when they play stadiums in the United States.

I heard rumours U2 might open for Swift.

what does this say about the music taste of a lot of Americans?

Yes, I had mentioned her when it was asked who would "claim the throne" of touring after U2 and the Rolling Stones in the thread about stadium tours. Most people shot it down as an unremarkable feat, since she was not the first female to play stadiums. However, she has been able to do it after being in the business for only three years, and with only two albums. This shows the popularity of country music in the U.S. (for better or for worse).

It also only took 4 hours to completely sellout. Its very unusual to see this level of concert demand for such a young artist with only two albums, even though its mainly just in North America.

interesting that he says $750m including merchandise

that makes sense....if they match this year's gross next year, plus the additional gross from the anticipated SA and Australian legs, then the tour should end up in the range of $650 million, so plus merchandise would be around $750 million.

The 2nd legs of Europe and North America will probably bring them to $600 million. I think South America, New Zealand, Australia and Japan would take them beyond $700 million. At a minimum they will do at least 15 concerts in these other area's outside North America and Europe grossing over $100 million dollars.

Your numbers for Europe seem to be quite undercalculated as you only used the seating capacy for all stadiums except for Paris. I think Turin might end up with 40.000. Eventually Munich and Rome will be full at around 90.000. The Helsinki shows should draw over 50.000 each.
I don't think there will be any shows in Marseille and Oslo. Paris II seems quite plausible since it would be a certain sellout, but don't you think they would have announced it by now? Zurich has a good chance, it would also be a fast sellout, similar to Vienna.

Obviously, some shows will be higher than the listed seating capacity, while a few others might be a little lower. I just listed it that way sort of as an average given that this is just a very general prediction. I agree with the numbers you listed that would be higher.

Well, I know that Live Nation put the Police in Marseille on the second leg of their European tour, and given how fast Nice soldout, plus with no shows in Barcelona Spain this year, it seems like its ripe for a show. There is certainly space in the schedule for it.

I can't seem them skipping Norway, and there is still space in the schedule for it as well.

We agree on Paris and Zurich.

The European and North American shows were not even announced in 2009 until after March. There is plenty of time to add more shows if they want, if there is the demand, and they can fit it into the tour schedule. The 2ND European leg does not start until August 2010.

Thanks a lot for those predictions. I'm not sure U2'll play both Perth and Adelaide in one tour though. I think the last 2 tours they just played Adelaide.

Also, a total attendance of 7 million would be fantastic. I don't think it would be possible for anyone to beat that kind of number, especially given the trends in the live music industry towards smaller venues. U2 could hold the tour attendance record for a very long time.

But you make a lot of assumptions here. I don't say your list is impossible, but I don't believe it's true. McGuinne$$ stated that 2010 will see a similar amount of shows (with similar gross) and that including merchandise they will end up with a gross of 750,000,000

From Financial Times interview:
Few people now listen that way, he laments, but they will pay an average of $100 a ticket to see U2 in concert, even in an uncertain economy. In 44 sold-out dates since June, the band played to 3.2m people, for a gross of about $320m. Running the numbers aloud, McGuinness calculates that with a similar number of dates planned for next year, the tour should gross about $750m including merchandise sales, smashing the $389m record set by U2’s Vertigo tour in 2005 and 2006.

You predict 62 shows, but based on this interview, there will be ~44 shows next year. Unless he was talking only about Europe/US...
However, it would be great if your predictions will happen! And even more great if they will add some Dutch dates between Istanbul and Munich ;-)

:applaud:

Nope, DMB does not. According to Billboard the Rolling Stones grossed more than any other artist over the last 10 years. http://www.billboard.com/#/features/top-touring-artists-of-the-decade-1004053065.story
U2 is second and DMB is 7th.
However, DMB did play to the most people over the last decade. As you say, it's because they're constantly on tour (in the USA). But even then, having 11.2 million people attending your concerts is a lot. (Rolling Stones played for 8.2 million people and U2 for 9.9 million)

Never take a brief interview from McGuinness so literally. 62 shows is not dramatically different from 44 shows. They already have 35 booked, and its not an assumption that they will be playing in Mexico at least 2 shows, South America 6 shows, New Zealand 2 shows, Australia 7 shows, and Japan 1 show. So thats 53 shows that they are nearly certain to do in 2010. There are only 9 that would be questionable like South Africa, Israel, and 3 extra shows in the USA and 4 in Europe.

This is the biggest tour U2 have ever done, and its likely they will take as far as they can in terms of gross which means 15 to 20 more shows than in 2009.

The Merchandise gross is at most $100 million dollars, so that would leave at a minimum $650 million dollars in gross from ticket sales, and this is probably an underestimate from McGuinness. $650 million in ticket sales gross is not far off from $710 million. McGuinness generally tends to underestimate figures before the real final ones come in.

It should be mentioned that virtually all of Dave Matthews Band attendance comes from shows in the United States and Canada, the only places in the world where the band is popular.
