So... I have made 3 trips to Death Valley/Joshua Tree National Park. On my last visit I had the chance to visit with a couple of the elders of the Timbisha tribe for a research project (which doesn't involve the U2 tree) I am doing. I have found out the following.
1. The area the Tree is located in is sacred land for the Timbisha tribe. I knew this already which is why I asked.
2. They have pictures of the tree ( and surrounding area) from the 30s 50s and 70s. I am in the process of getting copies of these.
3. The tree was PLANTED in the late 1800s by tribal members to mark where the "burial lands" began. For those of you who have been to the tree this is the land about 30 feet to the south of the tree.
I just returned this afternoon from the my trip and I am still speechless.
