From Live Design Magazine (a very trustoworthy and published source):

Designer Willie Williams shared with Live Design this behind-the scenes look at the building of the set for the upcoming U2 360° tour. This shot from April 15 shows an inverted section of the main support structure, currently under construction at StageCo in Wechter, Belgium. Williams notes that test builds of the structure commence May 12, while simultaneous test builds of the video screen, designed by Chuck Hoberman and Frederic Opsomer, take place in Antwerp, while the main stage is being built at Tait Towers in Lititz, PA. “And it's all very big,” says Williams.

Can we please put this to rest?

The screen is gonna jiggle baby!

I really don't know, I came late to the screen discussion and just saw someone mention that it looked like some thingy similar to the Hoberman design. It could very well be!!

EDIT: Just saw your post Ouizy, thanks!

U2 360 tour Set Design: Behind The Scenes Sneak Preview

Everyone can relax now

In 1995, Frederic Opsomer founded System Technologies. Before he started his adventure, he was involved in designing custom video screens and mechanical systems. For several years, he worked as the Technical Director of a major video rental company. Then he came up with the idea to found this own enterprise…

From the moment System Technologies was founded, it speeded on the highway to success. System Technologies quickly became the first choice of world’s leading manufacturers for the design and engineering of their transportable outdoor systems. A few examples are: Sony, Panasonic, etc.

Beside the advantage of outdoor systems, System Technologies also quickly gained a leading position in the indoor display market when it designed and manufactured a revolutionary new type of video cube that could be rigged for rental applications.

In 1996, System Technologies was asked by the famous Irish rock band “U2”, to design and manufacture a 706 m² video screen for their upcoming “Popmart” World Tour. The system had to be lightweight, transportable and bright.

System Technologies integrated their custom designed panels with revolutionary LED technology and successfully created the first and largest transportable LED Video Display the world had ever seen. The screen toured around the world for over a year, receiving an enthusiastic reception wherever it went.

In 1998, System Technologies received the ‘Live Award for New Production Technology in Rock & Roll and Entertainment Industries’ for the “Popmart” Led video display. Soon the worlds’ biggest video display rental companies and music groups would all make use of LED video displays on tour.

System Technologies has developed special transportable displays for the likes of:

The Spice Girls
Janet Jackson
Rod Stewart
Celine Dion
Cher
The Eurythmics
Westernhagen
The Bee Gees
Aerosmith

Major LED screen manufacturers such as Smartvision, Sony, Panasonic, Lighthouse, Chromatek Hibino, Philips, and Sunamic had their transportable screens designed and manufactured by System Technologies.

System Technologies’ expertise in large video screens is not supplied exclusively to the entertainment industry. Sports stadiums and arenas have also benefited from the Belgian large display specialist’s services. At the London Arena spectators enjoy the vivid images on the four center hung video screens. The Zurich stadium has a display that can be used for sports events as well as concerts in the same venue.

In May 2004, the name of System Technologies transformed into Innovative Designs. On 17 January 2005, Barco acquired the business of System Technologies and Innovative Designs. It is now considered a sister company of Barco, which designs and manufactures display solutions targeted at the needs of the ‘special projects’ segment within both the rental and fixed installation markets.

Frederic Opsomer will head up the group within Barco. Says Opsomer: “the transaction is of great strategic value to both Barco and System Technologies. By merging the operations with a long established industry player and recognized technology leader such as Barco, we become part of a network of technology and market experts that understands the business we are in. This will also allow us to continue to express our creativity, now backed by decades of technology expertise and a drive to innovate. This deal will bring great value to both parties as well as to Barco’s Rental Partners, who can now depend upon our combined yet independent expertise to help realise their projects.”

Nevermind. Posted too late!!

Yeah, guess Google would have been the way to go there. Didn't mean to start anything, by any means!!

No worries gvox.........sooooo any ideas on the orange buttons/smarties??? Did Hoberman design the Lemon (it's a Lemon, right?) on top of the lighting rig, anyone think it will expand?

Looks like the techs are already there testing the gear. Will be interesting what is heard from outside the stadium very soon. :)

my girlfriend lives 2 blocks away from Camp Nou. From her bakcony you can see the top of Camp nou behind the appartment blocks directly in front of her. At least from that angle the spike is not visible like coming above the stadium.

Last night I sat on the balcony listening to the sounds of Acrobat, one tree hill, north and south of the river, mercy, MLK and Seconds...

System Technologies? Could one possibly think of a more generic name for a company?

hi, i'm a girl from Spain, and i'm going to upload the new album tonight.....unless the death threats continue.

Looking at the photo of the stage with the gear set up, it doesn't look good for people behind the stage: there's no way you can see Adam if he's in front of his back line and I expect much the same for Edge. Even if Larry spins but no one else does (even if they have legs) I don't understand how this will work. I know they all have in ears but Adam especially seems to like being in front of his back line.

Ah mikal, you just gave me a big helping of NLOTH leak nostalgia. The French invasion, the "planned" leak that was shelved due to insult. Good, but desperate, times.
