SOE 31: Yes, we have no bananas

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Then... the Blackout. I really like this song. But something is just wrong with the mix on this. Listen to TBT and then this right after. Its like going from a clear blue spring day - to walking through a muddy swamp with a wet blanket on.

I like having a tune with Bono having vocal effects. But this effect just adds to the problem. Sounds hollow and kinda worbly. The drums have absolutely no snap or sharpness. It sounds like Larry is playing the kick and one tom. When the cymbals get hit it sounds incredibly low. I truly have no idea what the thinking was on this.
Yes, I noticed how crisp and fresh TBT sounds compared to the rest of the tracks. The Blackout sounds super murky, and not in a good way IMO.

All the album tracks we've heard have excessive production quirks, backing vocals, and even sound effects going on in the background. TBT does not. If you want a version of TBT that fits with the other songs, I think it's the Sci-Fi mix. It has the same production, full of weird effects and flourishes that the band can't recreate live unless prerecorded. (I don't care for the Sci Fi mix, sounds like a huge mess to me.)

I’m with you. Really enjoying the new stuff so far. The more I listen to GOOYOW, the more beautiful I think it is. It’s been giving me goosebumps that last few times I’ve listened to it.

And that little bass riff that Adam does on The Blackout right before the bridge....KILLER

Me too goosebumps.... but because I can t believe such a cheesy song could be created by U2

If anyone is interested. My link with the new songs is still up. I have also done some edits/mixes in there if you want to check them out.

The latest in an "enhanced" Blackout with a little extra punch where it needs it. Subtle but works i think. Also shortened the Easy on me bits by half.

Also, an American Soul with the most offensive lyrics removed. Community, charity, blah blah refujesus... So it that is the worst part of the song for you (as it is for me) enjoy this version!

womanfish, you are an ace sound engineer. U2 should hire you. Thanks very very much for all your excellent efforts.

Great stuff! Always fun to listen to your alternate takes.

That’s my video [emoji106]

Thanks for posting it! As somebody who was to cheap/lazy to buy the AB remaster, I depend on people like you to post these kind of things on YouTube. Thanks so much!

(Don't attack me... I've BOUGHT all of their albums, multiple tickets, way more than 500 pounds! I just don't usually buy things that are intended to fleece fans.)

Interesting. I kinda left these circles for awhile back then, I just remember quite a bit of talk about how “fake” these tracks were since they had new vocals.

I don’t have a true copy, does the liner notes spell it out?

I don't think the liner notes spell anything out, but if you listen to Wild Horses back to back with Trying to Throw Your Arms, you can hear the 20 year difference in his voice.

The instrumental is from 90s. Vocals from 2011.

So what are people's predictions of when the album will leak? I'm guessing the physical copies are being produced now so it can't be long before some person gets a hold of a copy and decides to leak it.

Speaking of leaks... https://twitter.com/SoE_nigma

This person has apparently heard the entire album and goes song by song. For what it's worth, they have a photo of the vinyl in a turn table, so it could be legit...

Thank you for sharing.

From the descriptions and the four tracks we've already heard, I don't think I'm going to like this album at all :( . Hopefully Summer of Love, Little Things, and Book Of Your Heart hold up.

Autotune?

This place is gonna fuckin implode!!:lol:

Eh, I'll wait to reserve judgement but if it's a neat vocal effect on top of a slower, Passengers-ish chill tune then I could get with it.

My take on the persons write-ups: If you don't like any of the songs you've heard so far, then you aren't going to like the album. I'm glad that I've been enjoying the new tunes, so I'm still very much looking forward to it.

The write-up for Book of Your Heart has me very interested.

Book of your heart sounds most interesting to me and of course it's the one left off the album. That makes sense... sigh

I don't think I'll love the album. The songs we heard are fine but they don't excite me, so I'm pretty sure I'll feel the same way about the album. Good, well crafted album, but nothing to fall in love with.

Great find! Thank you for sharing.

That was a little like reading porn...lol

The reviewer seemed to like Summer of Love, The Showman and Red Flag Day a lot describing all as catchy. They also speak highly of 13 and Lights of Home.

Would say they didn't care for Land Lady.

Seems like Lights of Home is using some Iris lyrics and 13 (there is a light) is using Song for Someone, which combined with what I'm told is Volcano in American Soul makes for a very interesting approach. I really like Song For Someone, so I hope 13 will sound fresh and new and not like a b-side version (I'm opened minded about it).

I'm also very excited about Light at Home and the string version.

Albums don't leak like they used to. I'd be surprised if it does at all.

Hmm interesting. I'm so out of the loop these days on album release cycles as I haven't really followed many of my favorite artists except for u2 lately. I would have thought with physical copies in hand, some disgruntled employee somewhere would still try and leak new music. But times are changing for sure.

- Still wondering if this song is still on the album.

I'm ok with the callbacks to SOI. We'll see if they work in the context of the songs but I don't mind them playing around with linking the two albums in both direct and indirect ways.

His description of the Lights of Home really concerns me. He claims it’s reminiscent of Love and Peace or Else & Cedarwood Road, 2 of the worst U2 songs (IMO) of this century. Hopefully they’ve finally got it right this time, or his description is way off.

One thing I've learned from individual descriptions is to take them with a huge grain of salt. While fun to read, music is very very subjective and even in these parts I've read descriptions of songs sounding like certain other songs, only for me to listen to them and I can never see those comparisons. Remember blackout was described as sounding like zoo station, magnificent and other songs. I agree with the zoostation part but for the life of me can't see how it sounds like Magnificent.

I love Love and Peace or Else but don't care for Ceaderwood Road, so I don't know what to make of it other than they must be describing the guitar sound, which is an aspect I like in both.

Very true. I will hold on to hope. Can’t imagine they would place it 2nd on the album unless they were very, very confident in it.

Edge is right, it is a killer groove and I would love to hear it on the album.
