One quick thing: I love Bill Maher. He's hilarious.
Hey, U2. U2 rocks man. VP, I love your Fly av. Have I ever told you?

We actually got into a discussion about Ron Paul a week or so ago, about how he appeals to young people because he's apparently not with the establishment, and close to being libertarian, but we looked up his platform, and he's TOTALLY REPUBLICAN!! His stance on women's/reproductive rights is appalling, for one thing, ARGH.
I was old enough to vote in 2004, actually, but I refuse to register. I refuse to vote because, in my honest opinion, I deserve better than to vote for the lesser of two evils.
I should actually just say this. I used to be very active in FYM, I could listen to the views of others, and comment rationally, even if their views differed from mine. Maybe I could learn from them! Or something. Over the past few years, I've gotten more and more politically involved, and my tolerance for conservative views has decreased exponentially. Since then, I've made myself scarce from FYM, because I ought to be able to contribute something more valuable than "you're an idiot!" but at this point, I just can't.
Yes, but as a Manpower employee.
True.I agree, understand, and have felt the same way myself, at times. But if you don't vote, you may end up with the worst of two evils.
I know. That's what I keep thinking about each time I hear him speak. I like his general "stop starting stupid wars" stance and do agree with the idea of legalizing marijuana (don't smoke pot at all, never have, but given all the other stuff that's legal that people put in their bodies, I don't really see how pot could possibly be any worse). But yeah. There's that, and he's not exactly pro-gay rights, I don't think, and then there's that whole thing with the papers from some group or something he was part of years ago that were deeply racist in nature, so...enough to backpedal, definitely.
I too fully understand that thought, and agree, but at the same time, to not vote doesn't really help, either, in my opinion. You should use your voice to help try and fight for a day when we DO get better options. Multiple options.
It does feel frustrating, though, yes. I vote, but the politicians are so tied to corporate interests and lobbies now that it makes me feel like I don't have much control or say, if any. And protests aren't exactly "in" anymore, because they generally wind up attracting crazy people or people who are just there to be there and don't actually care about the issue at hand.
So I have no idea what the hell else to do that would make an actual impact, other than just keep voting and express my opinion the best way I know how.

Count me in as an Obama supporter, too, by the way. I may not agree with every single decision he's made, but he's trying his best, I feel he's sincere and cares, and I sometimes think he is playing some sort of game with the Republicans from time to time, and messing with them a bit.
I've had many a good discussion with the more conservative members of that forum before. I still don't agree with their stances, but generally it's been pretty respectful and a good, proper debate.
But yes. It is awfully hard to have tolerance for blatantly untrue or stupid opinions (and I don't refer so much to FYM when I say that as much as society in general). Sorry, but if you're anti-gay rights, you're WRONG. If you think Iraq was a good venture, you're WRONG. If you think Obama is a secret Muslim/communist/socialist/Hitler/Marxist whatever the hell you think who wasn't born here, YOU'RE WRONG AND STUPID TO BOOT. And so on.
I mainly go back there just 'cause I like talking about random stuff like that. I like debating and discussing things. And I do kinda like it when we get a conservative in, because otherwise it becomes like an echo chamber after a while .
Oh, that makes sense (I assume that's a temp agency).
Time for homemade pizza and a movie.
True.
Again, very true. My main problem is: I have no opinion.
I blame it on my Native American-ness. All we do is wait for the day with the US government says, "Fuck it! Let's leave this place to the damn Indians and go back!"
(that was a joke, btw )

First of all, I don't go into FYM much these days, but let me just say that when I do/did, I really enjoy your posts, you get your point across, but they're very balanced and tolerant. They're who I was when I posted in there, but who I don't really feel like I can be, these days. But still, I admire that you can, and often wish I could be.
But yes, I definitely hear you that there are some societal arguments that there are absolutely no defense against, and I guess that's where my issues lie
Yay! I actually took pizza dough out of the freezer last night, but didn't feel like stopping to pick up the toppings tonight. tomorrow, I guess.
Communism, huh?Aw. I actually live about 10 - 15 minutes away from the biggest reservation in Canada, my city has a very large native population, the last guy I dated was reservation born and bred. Like the rest of us, some are very politically active, others aren't. I wish I could say our country has a great record with its native Canadian members, but it doesn't. The political party I'm a member of wishes to fix that.
And that's fine ! Believe me, I know the feeling. I totally understand being all, "Oh, just fuck it, we're screwed no matter what." I certainly hope I wasn't coming off all lecturing or such.
And that's something we're not afraid to remind everyone of. Every single chance we get. This is true! You guys do kind of have a massive right to bitch about the government as a whole.
Thanks . Believe me, I don't know if I could be as calm if I were actually talking face-to-face. I like writing/typing out my opinions much better for the very reason I do come off calmer and am able to explain my thoughts much more easily. Face-to-face, I know I've gotten very emotional and intense sometimes-ask my sister . And sometimes it is hard to show some restraint, be it in FYM or in other areas of the boards (sometimes I bite my tongue during some music discussions, because I can just feel the wave of hipster/snobbery floating in and I'm just not a fan of that musical attitude/mindset. I like the people on this board in general and have no problem with them or anything, just sometimes the opinions expressed, I'm thinking, "Hmmmmmmm...". But I'll leave it at that, because I don't want to feel like I'm talking about people behind their backs or anything).
I always did like what you had to say, too. Sometimes I feel I can be a bit too passive and you seem to have a little more certainty and ability to confront people more easily, which is a quality I wish I had more of.
Totally understandable. There's some things I just can't compromise on, either. Everyone's perfectly entitled to an opinion, but when the facts are staring you in the face, that's when any wise person should be able to go, "Okay, I was wrong, I admit it." If you don't do that, then.... I don't know what to tell you anymore.
Aw. Well, yeah, then, something to look forward to tomorrow.
We had Taco Tico for dinner here. Again. It's sort of a weekend ritual for me and my mom at this point .
Communism, huh?
From what I remember (from 6th social studies), communism is a "all for one, one for all" kind of thing, right? Or am I completely wrong?
Ha, not exactly, I just jokingly said that because that's how conservative people in the US think of us. To be honest, although our conservative party seems to be mimicking yours more and more, it's still far left of yours.
I belong to the NDP party, which is more along the lines of a socialist party, even though your politics and media has made "socialist" a bad word. Here is a link, if you'd like to check it out. New Democratic Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Here s what Wikipedia says their platform is. Scary, huh? :shudder:
New Democrats today advocate, among other things:
Gender equality and equal rights for LGBT citizens
Improving environmental protection through government regulations
National water safety standards
Increasing corporate taxes[4]
Reducing poverty in Canada[5]
Aggressive human rights protection
Expanding funding for public transportation
Expanding public health care, including dental and prescription drug coverage
Social assistance policies that reflects citizens' needs and assist their re-entry to the work force
Abolishing the unelected Senate of Canada and ensuring more proportional representation[6]
Workers' rights including raising the minimum wage to pace the cost of living
Aboriginal peoples' treaty, land, and constitutional rights
A foreign policy that emphasizes diplomacy, peacekeeping, and humanitarian aid instead of offensive military action
Renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
One wing is focused on ending the Canadian War on Drugs and legalizing recreational drugs[7]
Lowering taxes for small businesses
What a frightening world that would be, if all those things came to pass...
Thanks. The turning point for me in there was when one of the conservative members came out against the HPV vaccine - and he has a young daughter. How much idiocy does that take?? Good God. I lost it. Be as fucking religious as you want, but also be realistic about your daughter's health and life span. She could be the most pure virgin ever, but unless her eventual husband is too, and is 100% honest and truthful about it, she's screwed, buddy. Since then, I rarely post. To be honest, i hardly read these days either, because to read would be to be tempted to post. And the thing is, I don't think this conservative person is a bad person, I think he has good intentions...but when it comes to your values and your female child's health, there IS only one right choice. Argh, I'm getting all worked up just thinking about it.
But yeah, I post in B&C very rarely, but I agree with you. I used to enjoy it more than I did. That place needs a few more non-hipster people to balance it out.
Oh, not all! I just wanted... um... actually, I have no freaking idea.
And that's something we're not afraid to remind everyone of. Every single chance we get.
(another lame joke)

That sounds like heaven. If all those things come to pass, I'm moving to Canada.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. It's like the stupid debate now about allowing people to get contraception covered on their health insurance and how religious people are bitching that that offends their "religious moral code" or some such BS. I don't get how promoting something that leads to safe sex is suddenly "immoral" or whatever.
Yeah. When religion starts getting in the way of common sense like that, I just have to shake my head. Isn't there a line, a point where you have to break away and go, "You know, this really doesn't make any sense for me to be against this"? I'd like to think God, if he/she/it does exist, would fully understand if you dare to disagree with the church on something.
Bah. I don't know. That's a whole other topic onto itself.
It'd be nice. I have way too many "unpopular opinions" there musically . I mean, everyone's been really nice about my tastes and such, they may poke fun at the artists, but never at me personally for liking them, and if they don't like them, that's fine, I don't have a problem with that in and of itself. But still...
Well, hopefully over time people will finally properly pay attention. They sadly can't do anything about the past, but if we learn from it and stop it happening in the future, that's always a good thing.
*Angels descend from the heavens, chorus of "Aaahhhhhhhh..." starts up, the occasional "Hallelujah!" can be heard, fluffy white clouds appear...*
I've had some beer and all this politcin' talk....
How did I hurt my neck? I freakin wiped out in a big old bad way on my way to work. There was ice on the sidewalk and it was wet. My feet flew out from under me and I landed square on my back. I think I tensed for impact and thats when I strained my neck. It hurts all over. I'm using beer and Aleve to make me better.
Even though I'm not an old timer - I think understand since I'd be one strong beer away from it myself.
