dirty day

I don't know you . . . and you don't know the half of it

Wonderful thread by the way! Never realised that already the first 2 lines of nearly every U2 song are THAT powerful!

Definately for me it's this:

"I have climbed the highest mountain
I have run thru the fields only to be with you
only to be with you...."

"I am not afraid of anything in this world,
There's nothing you can throw at me that I haven't already heard"

Such strong statements...imagine if we could all feel that way...

 You're pointing to the chorus lyrics!

My old siggy was the opening lines to "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses." ;)

you're dangerous 'cause you're honest
you're dangerous, you don't know what you want

The Wanderer said:

I had a starring role,
I was the bad guy who walked out
I like that one alot.
one that i thoght of off the top of my head was the opening to "please"

"so you never knew love until you crossed the line of grace."

In Howling winds...
Comes the Stinging rain...

even before the words, the drums and the sound got me.

Too many . . .

They just come into my head at random times . . . usually when I should be thinking about something else.

It also depends on what I've been listening to. But ones that always get me include:

I have climbed highest mountains
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you

Is it getting better
Or do we feel the same?

I wanna run, I want to hide
I wanna tear down the walls that hold me inside

. . . oh, I don't know. As someone's already said, it seems like an an outrageous number of their songs have really arresting first lines, the kind that grab you by the heart and drag you right into the middle of the song before you know what's hit you.

Yeah, it is sheer poetry.

Looking for to save my save my soul
Looking in the places where no flowers grow
Looking for to fill that God shaped hole
Mother...mother sucking rock and roll (Mother...)

I'd have to agree with ISHFWILF.

"I have the climbed highest mountains,
I have run through the fields,
Only to be with you.
Only to be with you."

But then so many of U2's stuff have really great openings. This thread really makes you realise that!

(BD is another one which I don't think has been mentioned)

And love...

"And love is not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring ...(2X)
Is all that you can't leave behind"

After Kite and Who's Gonna..., which were both already mentioned, I would say Walk On...Such powerful lyrics! I feel silly thinking how the arrangement of a few words can make us feel so. I guess it's also the way they are sung.

:hmm:

the ones that made me listen

In addition to those lyrics that had me cryin' these are some of my favorites:

"Hold me now, oh hold me now, 'til this hour has gone around..."

"Love don't need to find a way
You find your own way
I forget that I can't stay
And so I say that
All roads lead to where you are
All roads lead to where you are"

"And love, its not the easy thing..."

And I know this isn't an opening lyric but still...:

Grace..the whole song, I love it

This is such a great thread.

I hadn't seen you in quite a while
I was down the hole, just passing time
Last time we met was a lonely room
We were as close together as a bride and groom

I think those opening lines are really sweet.

Another one:

Oh, my love, it's a long way we've come
From the freckled hills to the steel and glass canyons
From the stony fields to hanging steel from sky
From digging in our pockets for a reason not to say goodbye

I like the imagery here...and I really like the last line in particular...I don't know why, maybe it's the way it's worded or something.

as long as the night is colored blue and black, oh yeah yeah yeah
as long as you're on your knees and she's not on her back, oh yeah yeah yeah

Is it getting better?
Or do you feel the same?
--
My love is cruel as the night
She steals the sun and shuts out the light
--
Don't believe what you hear
Don't believe what you see
If you just close your eyes
You can feel the enemy
--
The heart is a bloom
Shoots up through the stony ground
--
I don't know you
And you don't know the half of it
--
I can't believe the news today
Oh I can't close my eyes and make it go away
--
You get to feel so guilty
Got so much for so little
Then you find that feeling just won't go away
--
So you never knew love
Until you'd crossed the line of grace
--
We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill
As the day begs the night for mercy love
--
And so she woke up
Woke up from where she was
Lying still
Said I gotta do something
About where we're going
--
You're dangerous 'cause you're honest
You're dangerous, you don't know what you want
--
See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you
--
If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
--
I know a girl, a girl called Party...Party Girl. (kidding) :D

I am not afraid of anything in this world
There's nothing you can throw at me
that I haven't already heard
I'm just trying to fing to find a descent melody
A song that I can see in my own company

Lookin' for to save my, save my soul
Lookin' in the places where no flowers grow

If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again

I want to run
I want to hide
I want to tear down the walls
That hold me inside

The list goes on and on
