Anyone here go to the 4/29 Vancouver show?

Comments from U2 tours has the follwoing:

Comments: The crowd on the floor tonight is very aggressive, and a couple dozen fans are removed or helped out due to pushing outside the ellipse. Bono brings a girl on stage during 'Yahweh,' but she gets too friendly with him and her time on stage is short. Bono tells the crowd tonight's show is being filmed (likely as a dry run for real filming coming soon in Chicago).

Did they get thrown right out of there? Any more details on this?

Hmm, I was on the floor outside the ellipse, and I didn't see any of this... It didn't seem to me that the crowd was 'aggressive' at all, just really into the show. But then again I was further back.

That girl who came onstage during Yawheh was funny... First Bono tells her "This is not really the right tune" when she was asking to come on stage. Then he walked passed her, but was hesitating. He started to change the lyrics to something like "Take this girl, and dance with her..." So he went back and brought her up. It would have been nice if they had just huged, but she started to be all flirty with him and putting her hands all over him, including grabing his ass provocatively, and Bono was *not* comfortable. He was saying "No, no, no, ..." while trying to move away from her. The rest of the band was looking at her like " what the fuck are you doing", and they got the song all mixed up. They even had to stop and start again. Bono was trying to see the funny side of all of this, and most people in the crowd were laughing. Then he said something like "Yawheh also has a sense of humor..."

Anyways, in a way in was a cute moment, because it ended the show on a funny, human tone. But it was very innappropriate of the girl to act this way during a song such as Yawheh, which is essentially a prayer. It clearly made Bono uncomfortable, but he reacted well nonetheless.

It was a great show, but not quite as amazing as Vancouver 1.

Geez, that girl has a good sense of timing, doesn't she?

I can maybe understand doing that sort of thing in a song like Mysterious Ways (and not really even then - it's disrespectful no matter which way you look at it) but in Yahweh? She must have been drunk. :|

There's a short video clip in the Pleba dancing thread. From the video it looks like Bono was a little pissed at the end. Like the moment that could have been was ruined.

I wonder if the girl was a little embarrassed afterwards.

they didnt stop the song and start over... and i think the band actually was pissed off that this girl was so disrespectful... this concert was so great though, that even with all this happening it didnt seem like a big deal...

I was with two friends who were at the front of the floor, and they said the crowd was really aggressive, and there were several people who had to be removed, and they also had to hang on for dear life to keep their spots.

The band was loose and sounded great, but the vibe of the whole place was less fun, even at the back of the floor.

That girl was just one of those slutty girls that wanted a story to tell her friends over Cosmos after the show. I felt bad for Bono about it, he's a married man and some people that got a better look at it than me said that she didn't just grab his butt.

I was only a few feet from this incident... I knew Bono wouldn't pull her up to dance because it wasn't the right song for it... BUT he walked away then changed his mind, went back and let security push her up. She wasn't as nuts as it sounds, just a bit aggressive and tried to kiss him. He turned his head and mouthed "No, No". It was kind of weird to watch, though.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned that maybe 30 seconds before as Larry walked past Bono towards the tip he slapped Bono's ass. Now that was funny!

did he say "Good game!"?

I was one of the unfortunate few who was caught up at the front... The crowd was very aggressive much more so tha Calgary Elevation - it was actually scary. Security pulled out 5 -6 fans, for safety - I was totally crunched and everytime a new song came on the crowd surged forward, making it almost impossible to breathe, or move. A couple were allowed into the Elipse, but the Security made me leave the area and go back to the GA entrance, where you couldn't see a thing. I then tried to watch from the entry ways, no dice, wouldn't let you just stand there, had to just try find somewhere to peek in. Very big bummer, couldn't even see the rest of the show...

On Friday it appears several changes took place in regards to my prior U2 concert experiences.

3 generations of U2 fans, Grandparents, children and grandchildren, all arrived at 4:00 am.

To our delight we are first in line.

A few minutes later a couple, sister and brother arrive. These folks were really nice people and I formed a quick friendship with J and through the day we discussed the many things that U2 fans seem to hold in common, e.g., ethics, morality, U2 experiences, music, Love and Peace or Else in general etc.

About 6 am, along came a couple of guys who identified them selves as "U2.com website members" and stood quite close to the front of the line. They asked us if we had tickets and informed us that the line would be split in 2 this day, i.e., one line for u2.com'ers and 1 for those of us who had not paid the 40 dollar fee to join the website. They also told us that "their" line would form where we were currently sitting, closest to the door. I know now that this was the first in a series of social engineering tactics we would see from the some u2.com members throughout the event to get the best spot possible on the floor.

Now remember we only have a total of 12 people at present and these 2 want us to move over to the other side so they can start their u2.com'er line.

Well we had already agreed with the other 2 folks’ {who came about the same time as us} suggestion to start a number list to allow movement in and out of the lineup and to avoid people unfairly getting in ahead of other early starters.

The U2.com lads reluctantly take their place in line after several minutes of questioning and attempts to split the line, its now about 6:20.

The exact chronology of happenstance from that point blurs a bit but the summary of occurrences is still all too clear.

People had 2 general reactions to the number list. One was that they were thankful and felt this was a good way to ensure fairness on a first come first serve basis. The second opinion I heard a lot of was that we should be forming separate lines as above, one for u2.com and one for GA only ticket holders. Those of the second opinion also had a third. We might as well split the line asap to avoid the inevitable split that would be foist upon all of us by a third group. Who this third group was, would be changed as each new u2.com'er made a request to split the line and move the ga'ers to the other side of the landing, and allow the .com line to be closest to the DOOR. So who would be the authority to split the line? I heard that it would be the venue security and then that it would be some one from Principal Management, U2's personal team, i.e., Paul MacGuiness and Co.

I spoke with the 2 Orca Bay Security guys (venue) and they went from saying they would honor the list to saying they would not, and then to siding with the idea of 2 lines to move people in faster. These guys would not say who split the line the day before. It was only later around 11 am when things got tense that the OBS guys said it had been a security official (again no mention of who's security) who split the line (announced over a bull horn) at about 4 PM the preceding day.

11 am and 2 lads in their early 20,s appear. Man are they with U2 management, are they roadies, film crew? Nope just 2 u2 .com'ers- dressed similar to all the crew we had seen around the back of the arena at the video shoot- acting very official. These guys end up getting the list and splitting the line. How this happened is that they wore the ga'ers down with deceit and spin doctoring that I now am sure has been well planed and used several shows in a row since the elevation tour (more on that later).

The sad thing is that we already had "One" line with mixed feelings and now these guys and their fellows really started working on us fans that could not or chose not to buy a subscription to u2.com.

Their logic? The line was split yesterday and WILL be split today by the pre-mentioned and still unnamed authorities, so why not get it over with now? This was only after they tried the whole U2.com membership / presale thing equates to "special privileges" tact.

Basically the argument was, "We paid 40 dollars to be members and we can buy tickets before the sale to the general public." Where this logic is faulty is that you CAN'T get presale tickets to a show added at the exact minute that ALL the first show tickets (presale and general ) are SOLD OUT and U2's management adds a second show!

Voices were raised, security was non committal other than to playing their own self serving games and finally as one of those against the split the .com'ers were working I said, "Fine then go split the line if you can but you and I and everyone know this is unfair bullshit based on a smoke and mirros argument which is really an attempt to show up late in the day and move up in line , next to the door and in an overall better position to race the other GA ticket holders to the floor." But .com's guilty consceince would not allow that as the last word. They had to keep going on with their circular logic until they were told to "shut up, and go away to make their line."

Is this a U2 concert ?

Lets move on past all the new attempts by the people in the now split and moved over line to pacify and justify, past all the incidents where those friends of U2.com slip in at various points of their special line.

Yes on now to the official announcement over the bullhorn as prophesied. "Folks," said an Orca Bay (venu) official, "this is the general admission line area, all seat ticket holders can line up around the East Side of the building, thanks." What no mention of the sacred U2.com people, no blessing by Bono ,Edge, Larry, and Adam who appear to greet the mighty .com all with their backs to us lowly ga'ers? awwww.

Anyways, the magic moment arrives and heres where the whole thing comes clear. At # 4 in the ga'er line while security sifts through a purse, the now # 15 or so person is rushing through in their U2.com line to the floor or to the bar to secure the top of the vat for their friends who are racing ahead to the floor.

Now here's the interesting , God was smiling on me part. I pass my ticket to the second scan person and 'beep" ! So I retrieve my wife who is ahead of me and trying to get to the floor while #'s 16 to 20 or so from the U2.com line are racing her and we get a front rail spot in the ellipse with me right in front of the edge's gear.

But, more to come. I again tell one of the 2 U2 garment clad lads from above to leave me alone after he says, "See you got a good spot."

Then I need to switch spots with my wife so that someone's boyfriend, standing behind his girlfriend beside my wife, will take his elbow out of my wife’s rib and place it mine. I try to explain that he is in the second row, the first row is full, and that he needs to release his death grip on the rail and stop pushing. He says no as the booze breath fills my nostrils and his glassed eyes say, "and what of it?"

Now here is where I see the difference between the security team outside and inside (i believe they are 2 different company's). The security guy directly in front of me politely and calmly tells me to relax and let him handle things. He then tells the guy behind that if does not remove his elbow from my ribs, he will be escorted out. The guy behind me then says, no , again. Security says okay its your choice lets go. The guy behind then apologizes and shakes my hand, which I accept and we all somehow were completely comfortable throughout the show.

Back at the far edge of the ellipse my grandkid's parents are trying avoid my grand's being crushed by more drunks who say they "don't fucking care" about their pushing or the 4 and 8 year old that we felt would be safe on the floor as per the fact that this was not some power speed black thrash death metal act.

Here again inside security and in fact U2's floor crew come to the rescue and gets my granddaughter out of the fray and into the sound pit. I was told earlier that the night before that some young children and an elderly couple (75 yr. olders) were "invited in " to the sound pit for the same reasons." okay now we start to see the real U2 conduct the band is known for.

Anyway thanks if you read all this. I will be speaking with Orca Bay Management, sending my respective concerns and thanks to the separate security teams, and also I will be navigating the appropriate Principal Management and U2.com staff channels in an attempt to let the band know what we experienced.

I DONT BLAME U2 IN ANY WAY, THEY DO NOT HAVE AND DO NOT NEED AN ASSHOLE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.

Anyway thanks AGAIN if you read all this. And yes I did apologize to God, my family and myself for my poor conduct, and yes I am still so disappointed with the new crew that seems to be attending shows. Apparently in Boston the .com'ers got upset when they weren’t given preference over people that the Band and Video crew selected randomly from the crowd, you know people who can't afford to follow the band a network of successive shows, hook up friends in a special line, KNOW how to BE the #1 fan at the exact spot they WANT:( all so they can yell into their cell phone while your trying to hear the band, "HEY MAN, GUESS WHERE I AM YOU LOSER?

Amen

Sucks that you had a bad day. Was it your grand kids doing the numbering? They were great! She acted so professional right when we walked up, gave us a number and asked us to sign the sheet.

As for the two lines I think that worked best. It was going to happen anyways, and apparently since it happened so late the day before it was a mess and people with #200 were getting ahead of people with #100. I wasnt there but thats what I heard.

I think the 2 lines worked great, not perfect, but great.

I was at the both concerts. I was on the floor for the first one and in my area, no one was drinking because no one wanted to lose their spot. I'm sure there was more drinking in the ellipse since they already had a guaranteed spot in front of the stage. Unfortunately, like all concerts, drunken idiots decide they want to get closer to the stage and start squirming their way to the front despite the fact their is no room but they don't care because they are f***in a****les. The surges in the crowd were definitely difficult to deal with and did distract from my enjoyment fo the concert at times.
For people to show disrespect for the elderly and young is just wrong but security at these concerts could care less about this kind of stuff. It's just a job to most of them and as long as they don't see any violence, I don't think they give a damn. The Orca Bay security did suck which I find stunning considering this venue is designed to entertain people when they come to see their favourite teams, singers or whatever. I would have figured that the management understood that the people attending these events have strong emotional ties to the performers they are going to watch. But they don't care if there is fairness. They got their money. I do think the U2 management should take care to this debacle which occurs before every show. They set up this system, they should pay someone to organize the lines for every show just to alleviate the stress and anxiety for the dedicated fans.

Ohmigod. I had that same thing happen to me before the band came on in Seattle!! the guy was behind me (I wason the rail) and had his hands clasped around his girlfriend in a fist that was not-at-all-subtlely pushing into my back right under my ribs. WTF? I was pushing back until it made me feel sick and then I had to ask my husband to put his arm around me there and block it off. Do people relly think that they can make you move by being like that?

Sorry about all the bull you guys had to put up with. It looked a little crazy in GA from the seats and there was so much pot being smoked at that show, I'm not surprised people were drunk in GA too.

But that line thing - they've been splitting it all tour long, so it was actually good that those with Fan tix wanted to split it early. I'm sure you guys enjoyed the show, just remember all the *good* U2 fans...I think we outnumber the bad!

Oh, and how did the 4 year old like the show? I've been debating about taking my daughter to a show on the 3rd leg... (she's 4).

Did you do earplugs? Actually, I've found that the sound hasn't been all that hard on me after 3 shows. My ears rang a bit after the first one (in GA), but the others were fine. Or maybe I just blew my hearing after that first show and it hasn't recovered!

it was better to spilt the line early rather than later, it was far more organized than the day before

Concert was amazing......

Myself and husband and 8 year old daughter had excellent seats in section 119 (row 17). I stood the entire concert but I think I will wait till my daugther is older to take her to another rocking concert because she definately faded into the last hour of the concert and had to sit. Looking down at the GA area(s) it made me glad I had seat because it did look scary down there at some points of the concert.

As this was my very first U2 concert I am totally blown away by the diversity of the crowd. I'm hoping its true that they will be making the Vancouver concerts into a concert DVD - a definate keepsake to say 'We were there". :applaud:

I definately like King of Leons - they are raw rock and I'm going to get their CD and hear their vocals a little clearer. They need a little more work on moving about the stage and playing to the entire crowd and not just those down in the front.

A night I won't forget ever. Thanks Bono :bono: , The Edge :edge: , Adam :adam: & Larry :larry:

Vancouver GA Caution

Greetings!

I just got back home to Red Deer, AB after a 13 hr drive from the Vancouver 4/29 show. The concert was amazing. The 6 people in our group (my wife, brother, cousin, bro-in-law, and sister) had a great experience. U2 are on the top of their game. The concert sounded very beautiful. This was my first GA concert, and for me, it was awesome. But will it be for you????

Please take heed if you have GA tix for upcoming shows.

This forum has been an excellent source of information for me. People on here have helped me make decisions on what time to show up, whether or not to wear earplugs, and answered many other questions that I had about the U2 GA experience. Thank you so much! All your information really helped. Hopefully I can provide useful information too.

As per the suggestion of a few on this forum, mainly, "dabiggastu2fan", we decided to try and get to GM Place early in an attempt to get on the rail. I heard many reports that if we were too far away from the rail, it would be a poor experience.
We got to GM Place around 11am. There were some very friendly U2 fans that were taking everyone's numbers. We were #141-#146. Being in GA with a group of people is great. Our group took turns waiting in line. 2 of us waited while the other 4 explored the city to kill time. So going in a group definitely made it easier to pass time. We also got to know others in the line. These people watched our belongings and even shared their chairs with us! Fellow U2 fans are simply amazing and that was evident on Friday. So, in summary, waiting in the line was easy. Downtown Vancouver was beautiful. However, I couldn't imagine my wife lining up all day if she never had shopping near by. 

When it came time to enter, the line filled up and everyone with numbers came back. We definitely saw some line "terrorists" who didn't have a number on their hand. The thing about lining up in GA is by the time the doors open, you know the ppl who are "terrorists" (budders) and who are legit. I decided not to make a big deal about because after I did a rough count, we were about #80 (due to the u2.com line splitting earlier).

Upon entering the building, nobody in our group got beeped into the ellipse. I couldn't believe it. Not even the people who waited with us got beeped. But it was okay because we got a great spot on the very left side (Edge's side) of the rail. My brother was officially "on the rail" while the rest of us were in arms length. I was extremely lucky to have very short females in front of me so for all intents and purposes, I was on the rail (visually).

When U2 came on, the place went absolutely nuts! I felt at home. haha . The surge from the GA crowd quickly became evident. My cousin was seperated from our group by insurgents. I'll admit, it was distracting but I was too immersed in the concert to care. However, other distractions were soon to come.

It was obvious that the GA crowd was getting out of control. I looked back and saw surges of people. I couldn't imagine being in the center of all of the commotion. After a few songs into the set, security started dragging people past us that were injured. We had an excellent view of this because there was an open area just outside our rail where paramedics took care of people. I'm not talking about one or two people. I'm talking about 10+. They had to bring a stretcher for a few. These injured people seemed to be coming from the center of the floor. I even recognized a few that I talked with in the GA lineup. Paramedics were nice and gave people water. Children were also being taken away. I also saw security escorting some huge buffed muscle men from the floor. I was definitely glad to not have any of those types by us. As the concert progressed, I noticed that wife was having a difficult time. She was finding it difficult to breath and exchanged spots with my brother by the rail so she could breath better (she has minor asthma). I guessed that the smoke was getting to her. I continued to enjoy the concert even with all the distractions.

Right before the final encore, I looked over to my wife to see how she was doing. Security was in the process of talking with her. She obviously wasn't doing to good and security could see it in her face. She was hanging over the rail trying to get some fresh air. The security guard suggested that she go out and she obliged and they gave her water. She was totally okay, but I was worried about her. She texted msg me from where she was to let me know everything was alright. I continued on with the final 2 songs but I obviously wasn't as "involved" as I was before.

The concert was really amazing but there were a lot of distractions. Would I do GA again? YES!! Would I bring my wife into there again? NO! (unless in the ellipse or at the back). My wife isn't a weak women but GA isn't for everyone. The crowd surging was a lot worse in the center. Had we been in there, I would have feared for her safety. Luckily, we were surrounded by semi-normal fans.

Here are a few suggestions for new GAers:

1. Go early or late: non of this "in-between" stuff. You need to be on the rail or close unless you are over 6' tall.

2. Protect your girls. Get them out if it starts getting rough.

3. Don't bring children. What are some ppl thinking????

4. You are going to get squashed. Beware.

5. Make sure your clothing is appropriate. Not too heavy, it’s hot in there. And NO sandals or your feet will get crushed.
6. Try and stay hydrated even though trying to avoid bathroom usage. I think dehydration was the cause of many people having to leave.
7. Wear comfortable shoes. I purchased Dr. Scholls “Gell inserts”. Let me tell you, I was gellin like a felon! Everyone else was complaining about sore feet but it adrenaline takes the pain away when U2 takes the stage.
8. Bring earplugs: It sounds awesome with earplugs. The earplugs filter out a lot of the sonic "mud". You are still able to hear everything nice and loud. I tried it with and without the earplugs and I liked the acoustics with the plugs better. I didn't shove em in too deep but just had em in enough to block out enough mud without compromizing sound quality.

If I think of anything else, I’ll make sure to post.

But we had a great experience. For me, it was amazing to see the guys close up and worth all the distractions. It was especially fun to have my family there. Just make sure you do your homework before you do GA. Through education, a lot of these bad experiences can be avoided . That's partly why this forum is such a special place.

U2 ROCKS!

A friend of ours collapsed after the Denver 2 show from exhaustion and dehydration. Taken by ambulance to the local hospital. They told us they had seen close to 50 people at that point from the show. And Denver was a very mild floor.

I think perhaps some of this is that the show was in Vancouver..which has a bit of a reputation for being a rougher GA crowd. Just a Matt Good fan, and he has had trouble in the past.

But there is definitely a cautionary tale to be told here. Be prepared for this. Don't let it ruin your experience, but understand your limits and the limits of those with you. I even felt very faint and needed to sit for about 10 minutes after San Diego 2. I am 6'2", 220..good shape.

Either wait VERY early...be the first 50...or don't wait. This is exactly the spot you WILL be in. Credit U2, seems many are reporting Bono was less animated Vancouver 2, hopefully he was aware of what was going on and recognized he has some power to control it. Scary place to be in, his shoes.

I wouldn't be scared. I was right in the thick of things for Seattle 1 and things were fine. I was squeezed in pretty tight but it was nothing scary at all.

I think that part of the reason of all the pushing in the GA is partly fallout from the ellipse lottery

people who lined up for hours upon hours suddenly don't have a spot as good as they wanted, and try and push desperatly to get as close as possible

that said, kids and GA should not mix. I think U2 or ticketmaster, or whoever's in charge should probably provide a warning to those people buying GA, that it could get rowdy... you really can't expect to control 3000+ plus people and expect all of them to be courteous on the floor, especially after downing a few beers and smoking some bud.

At the same time, that's just awful, because everyone, regardless of age or height should be able to peacefully experience GA and have that great memorable experience, so it's quite unfortunate.

The Seattle show was fine, I would say that that was the best GA crowd I've ever seen, but the Vancouver crowd was out of control, I know people that are covered in bruises from trying to hold their rail position; Just imagine if they hadn't.
