Ford Edge
What is it: Nifty crossover-utility vehicle (CUV) from ford.
Tell me more: Sales of CUVs should surpass those of traditional, truck-based SUVs this year. This fast-growing segment -- up 8 percent so far this year -- might become the industry's biggest by 2010. ford hopes the five-passenger edge will become a dominant player. It has an aerodynamic profile, and borrows its bold front-end design from the Fusion sedan. Under the hood is a 265-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 that's paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It comes in front- and all-wheel-drive versions. Side-curtain air bags and ford's traction and stability-control safety systems are standard.
Quote: ``An important introduction for the struggling automaker to be sure, the attractive and practical edge crossover has all the makings of being exactly what ford needs it to be: the right vehicle at the right time,'' said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and market analyst at Kelley Blue Book's Web site:

Matt says: The Edge is about the same length as the popular Toyota Highlander, but it exudes personality that the Highlander and Honda Pilot lack.
When: November.
How much: $25,995 to $29,640.
If not, then: Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Chevrolet Equinox.
