Did I miss the "I really hate this album" thread?

To be honest, I'm not really wild about The Troubles either, but it has a nice melody and a good (albeit overused) hook from Lykke Li. It's not a musical revelation and it fades out before it really lets loose, but it's one of the most subtle and measured tracks on the album. It would be my least favorite song on Achtung Baby, but it's definitely a highlight here.

I also really like that the title is a red herring. Some may have been disappointed, but I thought it was clever.

The Troubles is by far my favorite song on SoI, and one of my favorite U2 album closers. And I really like the red herring, too. But what really is a red flag for me regarding SoI is that I like my favorite song on every other U2 album better than The Troubles.

Yep, a thread was finally created for them to come together. Not that it's a bad thing, it's what should have been done to begin with.

With that said, SOI still might lose luster over time but it's inly been 3 months and we haven't even heard the live(proper) versions of any of the songs.

The only close one was Volcano v. GOYB.

That's 8-3 for NLOTH. SOI, while being a decent collection of pop/rock songs (I gave it a 7 on release and that still feels about right) is not nearly as interesting or sonically adventurous as NLOTH. It also lacks an over the top standout classic (IMO) like MOS...though Iris, the best song on the record, I guess would come closest. I will say SOI is a more "even" and "consistent" listening experience, but that doesn't make it better.

Well, I did say slow spiral, and that we're just at the beginning...I agree that it's mostly held its own around here, though I do think it's lost a bit of ground, but that's just my perception of course.

As I said about, I strongly believe Interference will stay true to history and over time SOI's ratings will inevitably be reevaluated, and downwards. I say inevitable because if you want to know what Interference will think of SOI in 5 or 10 years, just look at what's said about Bomb and No Line today.

So 6-5 in favor of SOI. Overall, I still like both albums a lot. Isn't it amazing how one can like both?!?!?!? OMG!!!1111 Overall SOI gets a slight nod because NLOTH had the weak middle 3 which threw off the pace of the album. Since I like to listen to albums all the way through, SOI is a much more enjoyable experience. NLOTH on the other hand has bits and pieces of greatness that I normally listen to in a non album listening session.

I think it will be difficult, just like all albums, to decipher who just doesn't like the album and who just got sick of it because they listen to it all the time.

Also, it'll be interesting to see how the songs translate live which can sometimes help or hurt an album in my eyes. For example, NLOTH did not really gain anything from the live versions. Some of the versions of SOI songs have already helped in my opinion, from the backing keyboards in The Miracle to the breathtaking acoustic version of EBW.
