Birth control and insurance not covering it pisses me off yet Viagra and other erection dysfunction meds are.

Doesn't it though? I get it now and it's partially covered b/c I take it to control migraines (dunno why, but it works). It just pisses me off when people are like "well if you're worried about getting pregnant, just take the Pill". Um, OK, any guys with that mentality can gladly fork over the $150/mo for the pills AND the deductable for the required pelvic exam and bloodwork.

Holy fuck! Have they gone up that much?

I haven't needed them (for any reason  ) for a couple of years, but when I did they only cost about $35 a month and I haven't had any insurance of any kind for ages.

Umm, sorry to derail your thread, joerags. :uhoh: ...back on topic. I was still a virgin at 25.

Yeah, sorry for the derailment, I'll just answer this: it depends on what you get. I used to get ones that were $24/mo total (my co-pay was $15), but I've taken them for a year and though they have helped control migraines, I often get my period for two weeks, or have a week of nonstop cramps before the week of my period. I'm going to switch to the actual brand b/c my friend had the same problem and she says switching off the generic helped her. The actual brand ones cost about $123/mo, plus you have to have your annual exam to get the prescription, so throw in another $60 deductable for that. I think as a full time student I'm still covered on my dad's work plan which has co-ay of $23, but first I have to convince them I'm NOT taking birth control for birth control (how absurd is this!!!).

Virgin or not, sounds to me as if you're still getting screwed. :uhoh: Makes me soooo happy my "issues" seemed to have been resolved. I'd be a most unhappy and pissed off chick if I had to pay $123 a month or so for this stuff.

Yikes what kind of insurance do you all have :yikes: I only pay $10 for 3 months worth of pills and exams are just a $25 co-pay. I guess Kaiser is good for something after all

$150? Fuuuuck... where are you living.. here they´re about $ 30? (correct me ladies if I´m wrong) and the rest is paid by social (state) security.

oh ok just found out my question was covered.

I´m happy that not every American woman has to pay $150/ month. I was really shocked to hear this!

Sorry for your imbalances, LivLuv. I guess after all there are some reasons I can be happy to be male.

WTF.

In Canada, if you want to buy brand name pills, they run you less than $30/month. Not only that, but our insurance covers them for birth control purposes. It's ludicrous to even imagine they would ask me what I'm using it for. Duh.

I can't believe your prices.

I pay $80 for 3 months, but it's for an injection. No insurance coverage but it's not that bad.

wow...I paid $25/3 mos for the shot here, I just came off it, but I was on it for 7 yrs and for 3 yrs it was covered by my old employer, and the last 4, this employer didn't cover it. The Gov't here subsidizes it regardless of income provided you go to a birth control clinic and it is only $25. The prices you are paying in the US remind me again of why I love Canada.

Was a virgin till 21 and was in a commited relationship for my first time. It was crap. He wasn't a virgin but also had the 2 minute thing happening. Once the first time was over it got much better and very enjoyable. I have only had sex once in the last 5 years...Depo kills ur drive after a few years. Now that I am off it..should be a good summer:wink:

Just to clarify about the birth control prices, the one I mentioned that is about $125/mo is for the actual brand name. I was on a generic form that cost only $23/mo before insurance co-pay, but both me and my friend who was also on it had issues with the generic (bleeding for two weeks, cramps for a week even with no bleeding). If you can get your doctor to prescribe it for PMS or dismenaria, insurance is supposed to help cover it. The problem is that it's often a battle and you have to slowly coax it out of them. For example, if I go pick up a prescription, I'd be charged the full $125 and then I could call the insurance company and tell them to stop bullshitting and READ the prescription (NOT FOR BIRTH CONTROL), but the issue is that I don't HAVE $125 to spend, assuming I get most of it back. Also, my insurance gave me shit about picking up more than one month's worth. I was going to Africa and needed a two month supply, but they refuse to pay for more than one month at a time until you've spent three weeks playing phone tag convincing them you really ARE going to a third world country that doesn't even have running water, let alone a decent pharmacy and you're not intending to sell the drugs on the black market.

Am I glad Depo made me miserable :laugh:I had no idea it killed your drive.
Although I have to say that when I gained 5 pounds, bled sporadically all the time, felt nauseated and bloated all the time I really didnt feel like it anyway
Theres an idea. If you want to practice abstinence but dont think you can make it, just find a birth control method that doesnt agree with you

Even brand names here (Loestrin, Ortho-Tri, Diane, Ellesse, etc) cost less than $30. You guys are being completely hosed. No wonder millions of Americans are buying drugs online from Canadian pharmacies. And if you're experiencing breakthrough bleeding, like U2bonogirl mentioned, it's because the hormone concentration is too high in the pill or shot you're receiving. Go for a low estrogen pill.

Not all the generics are really the same. I can't remember the percentage that they have to be exact but it leaves room for error and I've had some ... trouble with a generic.

When you're a college student here though they're pretty cheap and you can get like a 6 month supply at a time.

I think Ortho-Tricycline is the one I'm talking about, b/c the generic I took was Tri-Sprintec.

Like anitram said, the brand names here are covered for a subsidy under our provincial government health plan. So it is only $25 - 30 for the brand name kinds you are talking about. I have been on Ortho-Tricycline in the past and at that time it was only $15/3 months. Almost all work insurance plans cover all the birth control pills so they pick up the difference usually and it ends up being free.

The loss of drive with Depo is a very common side effect. It didn't happen to me till during year 3-4, but I didn't realize why at the time. I was on it for 7 (almost 8)yrs total, and for the last few years just thought I was not interested. I have been off depo since last April, and in the last 5 months there has been marked improvement in that area. It kind of shocks me to think I just thought that I personally had lost interest in sex, and just accepted it for 4 yrs, when all along it was the shot. You are very lucky not to have that problem:) I just didn't like the weight gain, but apart from that I loved it while I was on it...now I know about this other side effect I unknowingly had, I still don't regret taking it because my life was quite busy and sex and everything that goes with it was one less thing to worry about!!

My best friend's girlfriend was on the birth control patch. She informed me that she had it stuck to her ass. I, personally, would find that too distracting - I mean, I'm not OCD, but I like to peel things off of other things when the opportunity arises: labels off pop bottles, price tags off products, stickers off asses. Babies would definitely be had relating to an peelage induced malfunction.

It worries me that you know what it's like to have soccer players using your butt for practice. Whatever turns your crank I guess
