Viva Cork Still Pursuing U2

Cork-based concert organisers, Viva Cork, are exhausting all avenues to get Irish rockers U2 to come to Cork for a major charity music festival later this year.

A spokesman for Viva Cork also said they are currently in negotiations with major acts for the concert, including Lenny Kravitz and Bob Geldof — a renowned charity activist and friend of Bono’s.

Viva Cork confirmed to the Evening Echo in April that they were hoping U2 would headline a major charity music festival called Viva Cork Music Festival in Páirc Uí Caoimh this August.

The group are planning to raise €1m for various charities, including the Chernobyl Children’s Project International, Concern, COPE, Irish Guide Dogs, the Irish Cancer Society and UNICEF.

A spokesman for Viva Cork said some organising committee members are personal friends of U2 and this is the main channel of communication being used.

“We have been in talks with U2 through back door channels. We know time is running out, so are going through all avenues,” he said, adding they are also looking at staging a collective group of artists with the same pulling power as U2.

“From the outset we have primarily wanted to put on a sell-out charity concert in Cork,” he said.

The concert could also be moved to September or even later in the year.
