April 24, 2003 -- STEVE Jobs' mega-million-dollar Manhattan apartment has gone to contract. Sources say the Apple Computer co-founder - recently named one of the 12 "piggiest" CEOs by Fortune magazine - will be bringing home more bacon after selling the San Remo penthouse that he put on the market last July for $14.5 million.

The buyer has not met with the co-op board yet - and is not Bono, as some have speculated.

The two-bedroom, 2.5-bath terraced duplex, located on the top two floors of the building's north tower (at 146 Central Park West) is hardly a mouse pad, with chef's kitchen, dining room and a full entertainment floor, with 16-foot ceilings and two wood-burning fireplaces. It has had a "no-holds-barred renovation," according to its listing at William B. May.

"The interior is all stone," said one visitor to Jobs' Big Apple residence. "It has an eerie, almost mausoleum-like quality. It's very edgy and not the least bit warm."

It's a description that could fit Jobs himself.

Jobs was ousted from Apple in 1985 in favor of outsider John Sculley after a coup engineered by Jobs failed during a crucial board meeting. But Jobs was brought back as "interim" chief executive in 1996, following Sculley's departure.

He has been credited with revamping Apple with the introductions of iMac PCs, iBook laptops and the PowerMac G4.

He became the full-time CEO in January 2000 and received a very unselfish $1 per year as head of the company. Of course, he also received options on 20 million shares of Apple stock and a $45 million Gulfstream V jet from the board of directors. But that was the high-tech industry back then.

Last year, Jobs certainly did well, pulling in $78.1 million - as shareholders saw their stock value plunge 34.6 percent.

Jobs' other company, Pixar, the animation studio purchased from George Lucas, seems to be doing much better. Pixar's credits have included "A Bug's Life" and "Toy Story."

The apartment is being listed by Roger Erickson at William B. May.
