I recall this era well and I cannot disagree more. As an older long-time fan, I had no issue with an Apple ad. The world had changed and TV shows, ads, and other media was needed to get attention of the people who bought music. In fact, HTDAAB had their best selling first week sales ever...

While that's true, they also paid a ton for those samples. For anyone to say U2 "ripped off" another artist was incorrect - U2 properly credited and paid other artists (I recall reading all about this in the POP era).

:up::up::up::up::up: There were some good songs on the last 2 albums, but I cannot agree more. I am more forgiving on the experimental side of U2, but many songs on those albums did nothing for me. They didn't grow on me, they didn't have that big single to push the album, they didn't have...

I'm assuming that was an exaggerated statement as U2 have done commercials already. And why not - adds a lot of publicity.

I can afford to go - and went to two shows. While I admit to sitting a token time or two, for the most part everyone around me, including me, were on our feet cheering and "dancing" to the songs. So it was hardly a low energy crowd sitting and playing on their phones the whole time.

This is a perfect reply. I too have read articles complaining about U2 being too political. This author complains they aren't political enough. From my perspective, this may be the most political U2 have been since the JT days, but what do I know. Regardless, I loved the shows I saw.

Oh, and we got to hear the first live performance of Red Flag Day, which was really good. U2 just seem really tight, musically, on this tour. Very well rehearsed.

For a pop/rock hit, The Best Thing easily fit the bill. I am a bit surprised the song didn't do better, but your suggestion would have failed even more, IMO, because it's a bit dark and not catchy enough. 2000-era ballad U2 songs have not really been hits, so that doesn't work well either...
