Got my E&I dvd just now.

I was half wondering if we'd get any interesting text in the booklet from...anyone at all, but no, just a handful of pictures from the show + credits.

One picture which did seem interesting - the shot on the last page (with the DVD pocket) - is that from Desire from one of the American shows? I didn't think they had that 'wheel of fortune' motif during any of the b-stage songs in Europe.

Their second best live film after ZooTV Sydney. One of their less successful fan club gifts.

I am thankful for the e/i dvd gift, didn’t expect it. Great show & setlist. Was in awe to watch Acrobat on my tv with good speakers. SOE has been a slow grower for me & appreciating any album for me comes after the live versions of new albums have been released. And Stay actually hit me strangely - seeing them in an empty arena post Covid-19 made me think how a show in this new era would be if people couldn’t congregate. Take the fans out of the arena and what do you have left- Just the bang and the clatter.

Only thing- it lacks the visual polish of the Paris BluRay. My belief - might be wrong- is that u2 planned to sell the BluRay and standard dvd but when covid 19 hit, they might have seen a challenge in trying to sell a not-as-popular show as say JT30 show, and thought why not sell the e/i show to hardcore fans by virtue of the fan club to prevent more memberships from not being renewed, something that otherwise would further be cancelled if people could simply buy the dvd. Money goes straight to the band & not resellers. But I think it should have been offered as a BluRay option, or the tandem BluRay/ standard dvd option you see so many movies offered as along with download on a portable device.

I’m wondering & betting they still plan to sell the BluRay later. Kinda sucks because I don’t want to buy a 2nd separate version of this show. Tough enough to pay the regular bills - my wife is losing her job - but then to justify 2 versions of the same thing. Not the biggest problem by any means. Again, it was a great show and lots of emotion being the band’s last proper gig for a while.

On a different note I have a feeling they at some point come back to complete the trilogy highlighting Adam’s new child on the album cover since they had children of the other 3 band members on SOI SOE. I think they have real intentions with their children, passing the baton on. Dirty Day with their fathers entering the fold, women being the future ‘Women of the world takeover’... Larry’s son on SOI cover > Boy/ girl on SOE > maybe mother & child on SOA? Anyways, fun to have something non-covid to think about.

What I'd like to see as a fan club gift is a video and/or audio recording of that 2018 show at the Apollo.

And this time without cutting Red Flag Day.

They filmed it I thought?

Thinking maybe they'll do a box set of the IE/EI Tour on Blu Ray/4K. Or it could be an extra with the JT Tour/Film that is supposedly coming out.

This absolutely needs to happen. Audio & visual.
Wonder if they’ll align some kind of a release when their SiriusXM channel debuts...

One can dream

Maybe they should join the 21st century and release all their concerts digitally instead of continuing to put out DVDs or Blu Rays

Well, that's the end for fun in collecting then. There is nothing great about this: paying and seeing it for a limited time, no artwork, no extras and empty places in the U2-collection.

It's only great for Universal. A lazy, cheap kind of collecting money.

Great bands still release on Blu ray, so no depending on providers, wifi, connections or temporarly internet problems.
Guaranteed quality.

Great. Just relying upon outdated and expiring tech instead.

Wanting to hold on to physical formats is an emotional response, not a logical one.

There’s nothing wrong with having an emotional response - just don’t expect companies to agree with you by trying to state your emotional response as a logical one.

I like vinyl - I’m glad it is popular again. If it wasn’t popular any more I would be annoyed about what it did to my collection, but I’d never try and justify my disappointment as some kind of poor business decision.

I couldn’t care less about digital vs physical format wars. However they do need to release it in the highest quality possible. And in 2020 that isn’t DVD.

We still buy magazines and books, don't we??!!

I think streaming is ok as long there always is a possibility to buy vinyl/cd/blu ray versions..
... no?

I have no issue with someone who buys physical media strictly as a collectable item.

But digital isn't the future, it's the present. Why on earth would I want a physical DVD that takes up space in my house when I can access the same video on 4K with a press of a button?

Not releasing their stuff digitally does not make U2 smart. It makes them incredibly stupid, especially for a band who has historically been ahead of the curve technologically.

I didn't say I was against the streaming. I wanted to say it would be nice to have physical releases too, would be great for collectors and I know there are a lot of them.

U2 always said they were on top of technology, that's true for their shows. Not for releasing material. We would have got a u2-3d blu ray and br versions of all their concertmovies upgraded hd videos on You Tube, none of them. They are not on top of that bill (by far).

Always nice to have a physical disc vs streaming. The sound quality (DTS Master/Dolby HD) blows streaming sound quality to shreds. I want to know who Adam Clayton is

I can't agree with you more!
I just bought a new subwoofer, and this is their greatest sounding video release ever!!!

In recent years, I've come around to just buying digitally for a lot of things (for mostly these reasons). The convenience is really nice, but my only real concern is that owning a "license" to watch this stuff won't last forever.

Truth be told, I don't see many music releases online for a lot of the bands I like. At least in terms of live performances anyway. There's a few out there, but not to the point where it's close to being the main method of putting those types of releases out there. Documentaries, on the other hand...

I bought the 4K version of INXS Live Baby Live and it looks amazing. I know 4K is probably not possible with U2’s releases, but to have a restored digital version is really nice.

There’s a “blood from a stone” problem for anything shot on videotape, which is all of U2s stuff apart from Rattle and Hum. But as was recently shown with Sydney, remixing them can produce an equally valuable improvement.

Looking at the number of great proshot shows they could probably make available on a streaming platform practically tomorrow if they wanted:

Red Rocks ‘83
McNichols ‘87
Tempe ‘87
Sydney ‘89
Outside Broadcast ‘92
Sydney ‘93
Mexico ‘97
Boston ‘01
Slane ‘01
Chicago ‘05
Milan ‘05
Pasadena ‘09
Paris ‘15
South America (I forget which shows specifically) ‘17
Berlin ‘18

...it’s crazy that it’s mostly unavailable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a Vertigo show from Sao Paolo, Brazil, broadcast in South America and disseminated in the U2 community? I remember downloading the video at some point and liking it more than the official Chicago DVD.

Wasn't that U2:3D ?

Was it not from Argentina? I have it on DVD,and Bono has the Argentina flag on the inside of his jacket.

This one?

Maybe?

I'm not sure which one I had.

Anyone who saw both of those BA shows hit the jackpot, though. Night 1 they got Fast Cars, AIWIY, and Love Is Blindness, and Night 2 got Mothers of the Disappeared, Original of the Species, and AIWIY.
