The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

I really don't see another song of the last 25 years that should be put above One.
Smells Like Teen Spirit probably had more impact at the time. But One i think is the song that has the biggest lasting power. People still listen to it today. Its still fresh, and many many people thinks it made a mark on their lives at some point. I dont see that happening with Smells.
Other songs that could rival one?

Losing my religion
The Unforgiven
Oops i did it again(just kidding)

Tears in heaven

To me One is the kind of song that has that universal appeal, like Imagine(which i dont like), Yesterday, Stairway to Heaven, We will rock you, Every breath you take, With or Without You:)wink:).
But there is something about One that makes it sound modern, and still gorgeous.

Since 1990?
Nothing better than ONE comes to mind...

 There's already plenty of U2 songs better than one, let alone songs from other artists. Don't get the appeal of the song, other than sentimental "u2 nearly broke up' crap.

One is a great song, but it just seemed to get hyped to hell somewhere along the line ("best song of all time" yadda yadda). It works brilliantly in the context of AB as a bitter little song about divorce, but the hyperbole that now accompanies it is a little too much. There are at least three songs from the 90s that I think are more impactful (Losing My Religion, Live Forever by Oasis and Tender by Blur).

I love One a great deal, though I absolutely disagree with your statement (although if we're talking about the live version with the Do You Hear Us Coming Lord verse, I'd find it harder to argue), there's plenty of songs in the last quarter-century I personally would rate above it.

Gotta say though, in the last four years, not including the concerts I saw in late 2010, the greatest "tingles" I've had from anything U2 related was watching them stumble upon One during From the Sky Down. That was seriously, seriously amazing.

tl;dr what say you Axver

Not even the greatest song out of Achtung's first three tracks.

Not even the second-greatest song out of Achtung's first three tracks.

Not even the third-greatest song out of Achtung's first three tracks.

I would have to agree with the OP. Greatest U2 song in the past 25 years and also the best song in general in the same timeframe.

It's been a few years since we've had our typical fight about One.

The greatest song of all time is clearly Wild Honey. You guys are crazy.
I'd actually put One last on my favorite songs on AB. Too overplayed. The Orchestra version, though......that's definetly up there.

One is not my favourite U2-song, not by a long shot...

...most of the time.

U2 - One (Modena 12-9-1995) - YouTube

Every time I hear this version I start to reconsider, without coming to any one conclusion about it. This version, though, is basically perfection for me.

Yeah, greatest in the last 25 years. Maybe ever. Magic note section sends me thru the clouds. And it's one of those rare songs that doesn't follow a traditional song structure and so it doesn't get old easy. I never get tired of hearing it. And I can't say that about any other song...by anyone.

I have a great MP3 version of this, blew my mind the 1st time I listened. I get chills every time. However, I'm glad they don't always play it that way, it would lose its impact. But once in a while on the tour would be fantastic.

Oh my goodness, that version of One is amazing. Thank you for reminding me that it exists, whoever posted it in this thread (I'm too lazy to check).

One is a perfect song from the 1st second till the last.
It's one of those song that are timeless..... just perfect.
However, as a U2 freak, there are many other songs that I enjoy better, just because I heard it too many times and because I think that it was played live much better 15-20 years ago.

Imagine how fucking lame U2 would be if Larry had creative control.

Yet he is the one on the brave new album cover they seem to be releasing soon. ;)

But I get what you're saying. Larry's generally not been the one for adventure in the band's music, has he?!
