If that's going to happen again (and it should), we definitely need to establish some sort of ground rules with Diemen so it doesn't get all *puts on sunglasses* cocked up.

Is it bad that the thing I'm most looking forward to with new U2 is the restarting of the Shuttlecock thread?

Beck worked with Jack White on Morning Phase, reveals plans for two more albums | Consequence of Sound

Beck will return in February with Morning Phase, his first album of recorded, original material in six years. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the renowned singer-songwriter shared insight into the album’s recording process and other releases he has planned.

As it turns out, material appearing on the album dates back to 2005, from a session he did in Nashville. “I recorded a bunch of things real quick. Then I thought, ‘I need to come back and try this again,’” Beck explained. For his return visit in 2011, he hit the studio with Jack White and recorded several songs. “I Just Started Hating Some People Today” and “Blue Randy” were previously released on seven-inch vinyl by White’s Third Man Records. Other songs from the session, including “Walking Light”, “Blackbird Chain”, and “Country Down”, will appear on Morning Phase.

Beck described Morning Phase as “California music,” adding, “The songs are coming out of a California tradition. I’m hearing the Byrds, Crosby Stills and Nash, Gram Parsons, Neil Young – the bigger idea of what that sound is to me.” Meanwhile, publicity for the album has referred to it as the sequel to 2003′s Sea Change, and Rolling Stone notes there are “similarities in texture, velocity and personnel” between the two albums.

Beck also revealed his hope to release a second album later next year. Despite rumors, however, it’s not a solo record. “It’s still in flux,” Beck added. “I’m thinking about the live show, a certain energy. That’s a whole other kind of writing – and difficult to do. You’re writing for a studio environment that is the antithesis of where the song is going to live.”

A third album, recorded in 2009 but later shelved, could also see light in the near future. Several of its tracks, specifically “Gimme” and “I Won’t Be Long”, have been released as stand-alone singles. He described the material as more akin to 1996′s Odelay.

Don't really know why people are shitting on the song. To me, the break in the middle is pretty reminiscent of the UF era, and the chorus melody sounds more effortless to me than a lot of recent U2 songs - like, it doesn't sound like it was over-labored on or anything. I don't really care about the lyrics. I like it. Not a classic or anything, but good.

Why am I only just now listening to Darkside's remixed Random Access Memories? Sweet sassy molassey.

Not wishing to open a can of worms, but I think at this point it just makes the most sense to keep the Shuttlecock talk here in the RMT threads. You know, where it's already happening anyway.

For now that seems ok, but once a new album hits, that multi-layer discussion is going to overload the thread and eclipse any random things people might bring up here.

You didn't have that German professor Kundert did you, I couldn't understand a word the dude said.

Some Indian guy, but I didn't understand a word he said either.

True story: My Calculus I professor was French Canadian with a thick accent. The first thing he said to the class was, "You'll have to excuse my English. I've been working on a math problem for 6 months and I haven't spoken to anyone." About half the class dropped that first day.

True story: I wanted to be a lawyer, so bad, for a long time. I went to Poli-Sci for the first month and a half, but finally had to drop because I was failing. My professor was from...Pakistan, I think. He had such a thick accent, I couldn't understand half of what he was saying. Never had a chance to enroll in the class and there went my law dreams :(.

I prepared myself with really low expectations, but ..... I actually quite like the new song.

Also, randomly, the latest Pet Shop Boys album is pretty great.

and holy crap, there's a cover of Springsteen's Last to Die on it. How .... *sunglasses* random.

Thanks. It's pretty pedestrian. And I don't like the fadeout at the end. Feels like a let down. I still say it's a decent hook in the chorus, though.

Glad this is just a soundtrack song and not an album track.

Tumblrcore is over.

Actually, I quite like it.

Okay, I think I'll spend $5 on it. I'm a Tumblrcore virgin having heard neither this nor HAIM. Plus I was intrigued that they were covering Dance Yrself Clean when I walked past their stage at Lolla.

Gotta spin some Cha-vurches by the end of the year. If it's anywhere near as a delightful as the HAIM record, oh boy.

Yeah, I really can't see what people find so inherently awful about the song, but to be fair these people are probably the same sort who've had little positive to say about them throughout the last decade.

Haim isn't TumblrCore, they're their own genre.

Also, MsMr's album was really disappointing, but they were fantastic live.

Okay, just listened to Ordinary Love. I am pleasantly surprised. I agree with GAF about not liking the fade out, though. I also agree with djerdap that Bono does not sound good. I do disagree about the slide work, though, because it's not exactly featured. The part that really popped out to me was the bass and drums. That bass line sounded fantastic. And then there's the standard U2 chord progression with something Eno-like shimmering on keys. The rhodes was nice as you don't hear those often in U2 music.

If it's a single, it sucks. If it's an album track, it's okay. If it's a b-side, it's killer.

I've got mixed feelings about Ordinary Love. The hook is strong, and I like the mix of inflections Bono has on the vocals. I wish it did something else after the bridge - maybe some variation on the chorus on a coda of some sort. It runs out of steam quickly in the second part.

Ordinary Love is ordinary.

Hey Cobbler, apparently the new Architecture in Helsinki single is available on iTunes in Oz. Have you heard it?

Edit: Never mind, I found it:

It's better than the first single... but something still feels off. I think I'm done with these guys. They've strayed too far from what I loved about them in the first place.
