Was she really talented? I never really listened to her stuff. I always assumed since she was so overexposed that she had no talent. (I am not trying to be insensitive here, I just don't know)

Deeply disturbed to hear of death of Amy Winehouse. Saw her in the studio this summer, looking good & singing beautifully. She was a talent.

Neil McCormick seems to think she was talented. He is critical enough for me.

RIP Amy.

there is another way

you could just give Back to Black a fair listen or two
after I heard one song, that's what I did
and I thought she was very good, that was her best work

she may not fit your taste, that is fine too.

This news is not surprising but sad. She had talent when she was at the top of her game, but her love for the lifestyle she couldn't shake made her a hot mess who would be dead in just a matter of time. RIP.

Is it just me (and no slight intended on people who like these songs best) or is there an incredibly sad irony that people loved songs with themes like Rehab and Addicted the most...

I loved pre Black Amy

Back to Black is full of drug references, so I guess it's inevitable (I always skip Rehab though. So sick of that one). Frank has some decent songs, but I dont think it comes close to the greatness of BtB

Rehab and B to B
is what put her on the map.

She had great vocal styling, with the jazz stuff and the more popular R and B, soul style, Back to Black stuff. itty bitty girl with a big voice.

Mine as well, easily. It's odd that her best song didn't even make the album proper, though she did open many shows with it.

And in response to gvox, Addicted is about marijuana, hardly something that leads to an early grave. And of course you can't get addicted to weed anyway, only gain a dependency.

I wasn't a fan, and at the time of Back to Black wished the world would stop heaping praise on someone who's image was to buck the need for help from addiction, but this of course is tragic, truly, truly sad.

I have no idea why my jaw is agape over this. Seemed too obvious, I suppose.

What really blows is that she lived a shitty, shitty lifestyle for so long that I figured she'd pull a Keef and live to be a million regardless. And maybe make some really kickass records in the meantime; I always liked her music.

RIP, Amy.

I was never a fan and never really listened to her but it was truly a shock to read about this today. I thought she might beat the odds. Never realized she was that young. Very sad.
