From 1980 to 2000, it was difficult to tell exactly what the next U2 album would sound like. Briefly: They added atmosphere to new wave, looked for God and found hits, exhumed their rock'n'roll heroes, sent-up those same heroes while losing their religion, and punctured pop via mutated techno. Each move was more audacious than the last-- even 1997 knee-jerk victim Pop saw the world-beating act taking completely unnecessary musical and financial risks in the name of Warholian post-modern pastiche. They then also managed to surprise on 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind by successfully returning to form after shrugging off the notion for so many years.

Jeez, look at those scores. THE FORK! really have an axe to grind with Shuttlecock. The fact that they consistently report tour and album news (not to mention putting an interview up on Pitchfork.tv) just further proves the point that they absolutely hate the band.
 
Right, and those news items are never posted without some snarky remark about the band.

Also, those reviews are all for 80's albums, back when it was still cool to like them. So I'm not impressed by their nostalgia.

And it doesn't change the fact that the band had a shitload of great songs in the 90's, and none have shown up on the proper list.

We'll see what happens when the Achtung, Birdie remaster comes out.
 
How much of that snark is due to a decade's worth of lame tunes and obnoxious behavior, though? I'd guess all of it.

Regardless of how this songs list turns out, you can safely expect a 9.0+ for Achtung, Birdie. The lists with a ton of entries are a bit of a hodgepodge, so it might not have any bearing on the album's score. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if 90's Shuttlecock eventually is considered very hip, for better or for worse.

Didn't they skip Achtung Baby on a best albums of all-time/90s/whatever list or something?
 
I pretended to like "Half Light II" in the car like you wouldn't believe today.

Yeah, they missed the album on the 90s albums list, but they've admitted to glossing over things before. I don't see why their glowing reviews of the remasters would lead anyone to believe they won't give at least two of the three 90s albums the same treatment. That is if we even get Cockropa and Poppycock remasters. But yeah, you think they're going to squander an opportunity to set a trend in the indie community by saying they "get" what Shuttlecock were doing that decade? Not likely.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure even positive remarks made about Achtung Birdie are usually followed by insinuations that the band lost the plot afterwards. It often seems like they can't win with these guys.

If P-Fork had been around in the mid-90's, I'm sure that Cockengers would have given them a lot more indie cred and left them with a better standing in those circles than they currently have. Like they're too good to be guilty pleasures but not enough for serious consideration.

It's easy for one to say "who cares", but it bugs me that bands like Guns 'n' Roses (among many others) are getting major props while they're relegated to "See also:" status.
 
Hold the fuck up. Why is I Wanna Be Adored on the list? That album came out in '89.

I like the choice, it's a killer album opener, but what the hell?

Also, speaking of the 'fork discussing hip-hop, I actually got a kick out of their little write up for Bone Thugs' Crossroads:

"Metallica-levels of misplaced vision."

"...the last truly clutch performance by a Cleveland team."

Not bad.
 
Oh hey, IYS - I bought that R. Luke Dubois album you recommended to me on iTunes. Haven't listened yet, but did pick it up!

Still, for what was probably around $5, you can't get a more terrifying glimpse at the inner workings of American pop music!
 
The link you shared about the album was sitting in my favorites for a while, and I figured I was never going to get around to checking it out, wasn't even sure it would be up my alley.

Then someone sent me an iTunes gift card for my birthday, and it's rare that I find something I want to buy on iTunes (since I prefer CDs), so I thought the stars had aligned to use it to take a total chance and buy it.

I'll pipe up after I've listened to it.

Aw, man...! That's a rip-off. Not because the album's not worth serious attention, but because it's like 5 tracks, or something. The fuck happened to $1 tunes?
 
I know some tracks went up to $1.29 a while back, while some remained at $.99 - something about removing the protection? Or upping the quality? I don't remember, since I use it so rarely.

I think album prices remained the same. Could be wrong.
 
If you haven't, make sure to read up on the project before listening. Without context, the record (I think it's actually a "published" thesis...?) would pretty much be meaningless.
 
Big ups, for real. Regardless of whether or not you like it, your horizons will have been expanded, and you will have a keener and more visceral grasp on the changes in pop song-craft.

I don't know about that...Oasis seems to be the most reviled band among Pitchfork writers. Every mention of Oasis, whether it be Definitely Maybe or Don't Believe the Truth, is loaded with vitriol. The review of Heathen Chemisty is still the most biased, inane piece of writing that I've seen on the site - absolutely devoid of any shred of what might be considered journalistic merit.

But maybe I'll be wrong. I actually hope that I'll be wrong in this regard.
