The first time I heard the song, it was with the video, and I was so annoyed by the over-the-topness of it, and Chris Tucker being so annoying in it, that I barely even noticed the song.
I heard the song on its own a few years later and was really surprised by how good it was. It's got a great groove.

I'm not a huge Michael Jackson fan but I definitely agree that he was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. In terms of pure pop, he was the best. R.I.P.

It's amazing that Michael Jackson is no more. I remember the early 90's, when I was still in single digits, his name was everywhere. Didn't really have a concept of who he was or what he did, but his name was just everywhere. He might have been bigger than Jesus Christ maybe.
Anyway, he had some good tunes, namely Beat it and Stranger in Moscow. I didn't go on him much as individual with all his surgery and changing the colour of his skin from black to white (so much for it not mattering whether you're black or white!).
Don't think the ongoing molestation stuff is appropriate considering he was never found guilty. Some people don't seem to have faith in their justice system.
And I wouldn't call merely sleeping in a bed with a child as an indecent act. Just not a smart thing to do in a society full of wowsers and when you're the biggest celebrity on the planet.

When I heard about Michael Jackson's death today, I was shocked and in too much disbelief to be sad or process what an icon the world has lost. After I got home, I wanted to come to Interference and share my thoughts and memories. This is a website I have frequented for nine years now, and I was looking forward to finding a little comfort and mutual understanding from the other music fans here. We all love music, or we wouldn't have ended up here in the first place. Discussing Michael Jackson, and what he meant to us as music fans, was something I expected to be a source of comfort.
And then I come to this thread and I see the most disgusting, passive aggressive, tasteless remarks and jokes. The general music thread in B&C is even more vile than this one. I'm so disgusted to see the lack of respect being shown toward a human being in the hour of his passing. It really says a lot about the character of the people writing these remarks. I realize this is "just an Internet forum," but clearly, for some people, that excuses the fact that they are behaving reprehensibly toward a man who meant so much to millions of people who has just lost his life and the countless fans who are mourning. The lack of sensitivity by some of the people here is absolutely staggering. I'm sorry, but there is no way you can defend such behavior to me. Celebrity or not, guilty or not, he was just a human being and deserves to be shown some decency and respect.
To those in this thread who are legitimately mourning the passing of Michael Jackson, I stand with you. I very much remember taking my mom's vinyl copy of Thriller and burning it up on my record player as a kid. I owned "Bad" on cassette. And even as I grew up and moved on to different genres of music, there were always some Michael Jackson songs that still spoke to me. I am very sad about his death, not just because of what he meant to music and how he shaped our culture in the 80s, but because his life was clearly one that none of us would choose for ouselves. Tonight I feel in my heart a great deal of compassion for Michael Jackson and the life he lived under a scrutiny the rest of us can't even begin to comprehend. How that impacted him is obvious to all, and I sincerely hope that he is at peace.

To be fair, there are a lot of people who are not affected at all by his passing, and I for one am one of them. I respect the man and his work, before it all got freaky. Another day, another death, and it sucks you weren't able to find comfort here, but there's too many different people. Can someone honestly say he was an 'icon' and providing good for the last ten years to his non-fans/fanatics other than a comedy outlet?

1. Nothing is too serious to be joked about. It's not like we're among family members here.
2. I personally am offended by the attention MJ has received over the years despite the history of disturbing and irresponsible behavior. Had there not been such an OTT display of surprise and grief, you wouldn't have seen as much antipathy from the other direction.
3. You're being awful sanctimonious, and are failing to recognize that in the middle of all the jokes have been some thoughtful criticism of the subject.
4. I'm curious if anyone who's a human being is entitled to that respect you're talking about. He's not being abused here because he's a celebrity, but because he's a bit of a monster?

6. I think it's a bit much to be judging the character of people based on their remarks made about this one person. That's a little obtuse. I can speak for myself as an extremely sensitive person who just happens to have little sympathy in this particular situation. Forgive me if I'm more disturbed by the people dying in Iran for their personal freedom than this self-inflicted (however indirectly) death. Maybe that's something you should be shocked and in disbelief about.

But I feel the need to share with my fellow U2 fans the following. A friend texted me this information today at 6:01pm. I am an elementary school teacher and just finished my last day with my grade 4 class. Summer vacation is about to start and I was out celebrating with a few teachers in my class. I entered the gate at the Rogers Centre to watch the Blue Jays. I was feeling rather reflective.......I was thinking of the past year.....looking forward to my summer.....looking forward to the big party on the weekend that I am going to DJ at.
Most of all...I was very excited because when I sat in my seat, I was thinking about how the CLAW was going to look inside of the Rogers Centre.....my hometown stadium for two nights on the tour.
I saw the text. Micheal J is dead. There is only one Michael J.....so I called Gvox as I noticed he had called me. Gabriel, my U2 friend to the end of the earth confirmed.
For me....before there was U2........there was Michael Jackson.
In 1984, my first concert ever was the Jackson 5, Victory Tour at Exhibition stadium. It was my first concert ever and I remember being blown away. My aunt bought my brother and I some tickets. I think they cost $24CDN at the time........which was a lot of money.
It was at this concert I bought my first concert swag. I bought a concert book....which I still have.......and I headband that said Jackson 5.
Despite his downfall and allegations of his moral character.....it was HIS concert that enlightened me to the power of performance.
Have you ever played the game where you ask, "What was your first concert ever?"
I'm proud to say mine was the Jackson 5, Victory Tour.
.....and for me....this wet my appetite for the future of what concerts should be.

I don't think it's that much to ask that people keep negativity out of a RIP thread (if you need a refresher course: http://www.u2interference.com/forums/f199/rip-saddam-171006.html), especially since it's been asked again and again and again. If one of your idols died, I'd expect you to do the same. However, cretins exist on the internet and have infiltrated our forums, much like elsewhere, so I can't say I'm surprised at some of the responses in here. Some of us, apparently, are even more children at heart than Michael Jackson was.
I didn't idolize him, but I recognize his contributions to music were far too great for even myself to fathom, and the fact that he hasn't produced anything "lately" doesn't take away his genius from back then. Nearly every good piece of modern pop music owes its lion's share to Michael's music in the 80s. I haven't even touched his humanitarianism. "We Are The World" was a biiiiig deal. It even predated, and probably severely influenced, Live Aid. Keep that in mind as a certain group most us love around here owes a big amount of their success to that show.

Been watching the news shows and stuff this evening (Some of Larry King, Anderson Cooper, Entertainment Tonight,...). Just caught up on this thread as well. Still a shock, and hard to believe. Perhaps it's a generation thing, being that I'm one of the older ones in the thread, but I grew up with the Jackson 5, The Jacksons and thus Michael Jackson (of the 80s). So it's pretty difficult/shocking/sad to grasp. This whole situation, his life, etc. seemed so tragic. May he finally have some peace.
And VP said it well earlier in this thread, I just forgot to multi-quote. And if what anitram said was true about the Beatles catalog that MJ owned, I think that is very cool.

Heath Ledger wasn't accused of molesting children, didn't have a disturbing fixation with them, or chop his face up with plastic surgery.
