Please vote for your FAVOURITE song(s).
The top TWELVE songs from this era proceed to the Grand Final.
(The Grand Final will be Interference's top 30, with twelve 1980s songs, ten 1990s songs, and eight 2000s songs.)

Welcome to the 1980s semi final in Best Song Survivor v2! The object of this game is to find Interference's favourite U2 songs. Each album will be featured in a single round with the non-album tracks from its era. The amount of finalists from each era is based on seeding from the latest U2 Album Survivor. These rounds will last 24 hours and will be multiple choice polls where you vote for your favourite tracks (within reason). A suggestion is to vote for the amount of tracks that will proceed to the next round, although this is not a hard and fast rule.

Only original U2 songs with official studio releases will compete. Please vote solely on the basis of studio tracks. Songs with multiple versions will be listed separately; remixes will not, so if you favour a remix over the original song, vote on the basis of your favourite.

Both the early and late eighties quarter finals were extremely closely fought affairs. The early eighties quarter was so close that ninth place - the last qualifying spot - was tied and ten songs proceed to the semis. It was very nearly twelve, with Seconds and 11 O'clock Tick Tock (the highest placed non-album track of the tournament thus far) coming within a vote of ninth spot.

The Joshua Tree has greatest finals representation, getting five tracks through. Boy and The Unforgettable Fire have both achieved four, as did War thanks to its fortuitous ninth place draw. October and RAH, the two lowliest ranked eighties albums, similarly only managed two songs each.

Please note: today there will be only one round. We will return to simultaneous rounds tomorrow with Achtung Baby and Zooropa.

Well, the first eleven was easy. In rough order:

1. One Tree Hill
2. ASOH
3. Heartland
4. NYD
5. UF
6. Gloria
7. Bad
8. Exit
9. The Electric Co.
10. Tomorrow
11. An Cat Dubh

Then I dithered over Like A Song, Drowning Man, or Pride for twelfth. In the hope Pride would be OK without my vote, I went with Drowning Man, since I'm probably into it the most right now.

An Cat Dubh
Out Of Control
The Electric Co.
Gloria
Tomorrow
Sunday Bloody Sunday
New Year's Day
A Sort Of Homecoming
Running To Stand Still
One Tree Hill
All I Want Is You

Sunday Bloody Sunday and TUF are basically tied IMO, but I felt sorry for SBS.

An Cat Dubh
Out Of Control
Gloria
Tomorrow
New Year's Day
Pride
The Unforgettable Fire
Bad
Where The Streets Have No Name
With Or Without You
Running To Stand Still
Heartland

how come 90s get 10 songs while 00s get only 8 while 00s have 1 more official U2 release?

are we counting passengers as U2 work or grouping it with unreleased tracks?

1990s has one more. Achtung, Zooropa, Passengers, Pop vs ATYCLB, HTDAAB, and NLOTH.

Weighting also plays a factor. 1990s albums did better than 2000s albums.

also, my votes:

new year's day, like a song, drowning man, a sort of homecoming, the unforgettable fire, one tree hill, exit, heartland

didn't really need to vote for nyd, but after it's showing in the last survivor i figure better safe than sorry.

even if we discount it the decades are equal in terms of albums released under the u2 brand. and let's face it, the only things worthwhile from the 00 albums are all of nloth and cobl.

I'd take TGBHF and Electrical Storm over half of NLOTH. But yeah.

Also, I should've said in my earlier post, there's no "unreleased tracks" group. Anything not officially released doesn't qualify for the tournament, while anything officially released is grouped in with album eras rather than a separate non-album grouping.

I have occasionally considered doing an unreleased tracks Survivor, but it'd be a waste of time since Mercy will clean up, and historical precedent shows that if we upload songs for people to hear, most don't bother listening anyway.

how about we do an unreleased tracks survivor except for mercy? :hyper: it can be kind of like how we did the last survivor, assuming streets and one would win so we just didn't include them in polls.

^ that would be interesting :hmm: approximately how many do we have anyway? You could also run the winner against Mercy at the end to see how it holds up to it.

hmm, off-hand i can think of quite a few pre-boy tracks, be there, wild irish rose, the stuff from salome, and then the atyclb and htdaab stuff.

and that is exactly what i was thinking of!

Hah, I thought of that. But you know, I think if we did do an Unreleased tracks survivor, we should include Mercy in the spirit of fairness, to at least give it a run - then we'd know for next time if it dominates too much. Now that I think about it, a bit of a backlash has developed against it, so I'm not 100% sure it would dominate all.

I wouldn't use the ATYCLB/HTDAAB stuff other than Mercy, since I've been counting them as officially released via iTunes and using them in regular survivor. Also, just what would we do about Axtung Beibi? We don't want every pointless drum loop or repeated take of a no-hoper song, but things like I Feel Free and Take You Down are essential.

I may miss one or two, but this is my list, sans iTunes pack and Axtung Beibi:
Inside Out (April 1978 demo)
Jack In A Box (as above)
Tonight (as above)
Trevor (as above)
False Prophet (February 1979 demo)
Lost On A Silent Planet (as above)
Alone In The Light (as above)
ATAP demo (as above)
ADWM demo (mid-1979 sessions)
The King's New Clothes (live, October 1979)
The Dream Is Over (December 1979 sessions)
Cartoon World (live, 1979-80)
The Silver Lining (live, 1979-80)
Pete The Chop (live, 1980)
The Speed Of Life, feat. lyrics (live, 1980)
Father Is An Elephant (live, November 1980)
Carry Me Home (live, May 1981)
Be There (1982 demo)
My Time Hasn't Come (25 April 1987 soundcheck)
Move Out (as above)
She's A Mystery To Me (Sun Studios 1987 session/live Lovetown)
Wild Irish Rose (1988 sessions)
We Love You (live 2001, Antwerp)
Mercy (September 1976!!!)

I'm sure I'm missing stuff ... there are those instrumental tracks floating around from the Melbourne Popmart soundcheck that some people really like, for instance.

Ugh, double post. Damn forum hiccup.

Well, let's edit this and use it productively.

i knew you'd say that, hence why i said album tracks. i'd definitely take both of those over some of nloth too.

I'm going blind - I missed 'albums' after '00'.

Though I will always think of TGBHF as an album track. It makes ATYCLB almost feel worth owning. Almost.

this poll is worthless to me without 11OClock, Wire, Desire or BTBS, but I'll vote anyway:

Elco
Gloria
NYD
Song
Pride
TUF
OTH
Exit
Heartland

:hmm: this is true. come to think of it, it seems to have evened out a bit in terms of who likes it vs. who doesn't.

 i completely forgot about that stuff being in the itunes pack. and yeah, the axtung beibi stuff would be hard since there's just so much of it. i guess we could do a quick-fire round where the top five or whatever from the whole lot gets used in the competition as a whole.

and looking at the list you posted, it seems i have everything but tonight (i could've sworn i had this!), carry me home, my time hasn't come, move out, she's a mystery to me, and we love you. not bad :hmm:

Looks like there are 6 from that Unreleased track list I don't have (2 I have only live versions and 4 not at all I think) :hmm:

As far as Axtung Beibi is concerned maybe you (Axver, since you are running the tournament) should just decide which to include based on whether you think it qualifies as a "song" and not just a pointless drum loop.
Although there are a few official songs I happen to like that I know you don't consider "songs" so maybe that's not such a good idea now that I think about it.

completely, utterly, totally wrong.

you know what will go wrong here? there'll be too many people not voting for streets etc because "it doesn't need any help".

voted for electric co, drowning man and running to stand still.

drowning man is my favourite war song some days.
