Will No Line On The Horizon Outsell Viva La Vida?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

And "Saints" and "Window in the Skies" were big hits. Well, at least in Netherlands they were both number 1!

the saints had greenday which helped. but i think they are both excellent songs, and i would have rather saints been first single from NLOTH than boots anyday!

What were VLV globe sales by week?

U2 NLOTH globe sales now are:

3-1-1-1-2-5-5-6

100,000 + 1,182,000 + 421,000 + 262,000 + 185,000 + 136,000 + 122,000 + 94,000

Total: 2,502,000

first 8 weeks for VLV

359,000 + 1,585,000 + 713,000 + 456,000 + 331,000 + 279,000 + 232,000 + 219,000

Total = 4,174,000

Thank you. Well, let's hope that Magnificent, 360° Tour and maybe next album, Grammy or the end of global crisis will change the situation a little bit. :slant:

Well I think it's safe to say that unless Magnificent becomes the global hit of the decade and the world economy takes off miraculously, Coldplay will have won this round

But it's not like the playing field was level. NLOTH being the #1 album of the year 4 months in by over a million copies is quite an achievement in this market :up::up:

1,182,000 + 421,000 (64%) + 262,000 (38%) + 185,000 (29%) + 136,000 (32%) + 122,000 (10%) + 94,000 (23%)

1,585,000 + 713,000 (55%) + 456,000 (36%) + 331,000 (27%) + 279,000 (16%) + 232,000 (17%) + 219,000 (6%)

By this stage Viva La Vida had levelled off, NLOTH is still dropping

Coldplay will have won this round

It's not a fight/war.
Viva La Vida is an excellent album that deserves the popularity it got. No Line On The Horizon is another excellent album that deserves slightly more sales than it currently has. But I'm happy with the one I bought.
:)

Rolling Stone magazine gave 5,0 stars to NLOTH and 3,5 stars to VLV, what is close to truth.

But NLOTH sales are weaker, and I don't think that Boots are the only reason. The other great reason is that U2 are too old for youth, I think. :slant: I know a girl, that likes Coldplay more than U2 just because first are younger and more attractive for her.

O.K., I get a girl being attracted to a 27 year old long-haired Bono or a leather jacket wearing Larry, with his spiky blond hair.

However, I don't see how anyone could be attracted to the members of Coldplay. Yes, I know Martin married a movie star. Clearly it's love. Because those aren't exactly good-looking men. :sexywink:

I agree. I love both albums. I still think it's interesting to compare though, and U2 is my favorite band so of course I'd like to see them sell more than Coldplay.

I disagree, I think VLV is a mediocre album. No wonder RS gave it 3 stars and a half only. The very same rating they previously assigned to X&Y.
For me, Coldplay peaked artistically with A rush of blood to the head. That´s a truly great album. There´s no way they could ever top it.

I entirely agree with you. VLV is a cheesy pop song; someone here years ago bashed Stuck in a Moment for the same reason, but I find this song 1000 times better than VLV. I also think that Martin is a good singer but his voice is weak compared to bono's one (even with the Pop era).

I think VLV is a great album, much better than the awful X&Y, X&Y is probably where they lost the right to be compared to U2, U2 never released anything half as bad as that, and U2's fourth album was the best album ever made, Coldplay's was...good

If the 'other 3' in coldplay walked down the street, no one would recognise them

U2 will not outsell coldplay

Big deal - they probably will sell fewer than AC/DC, Kings of Leon, Greenday and Eminem

But out of all these artists, u2's album is the best and thats what counts!

Totally agree!

uhh same goes for U2's other 2, larry and adam. in fact, i remember a "who wants to be a millionaire" question that asks who is U2's guitarist? not knowing the answer, the contestant asked the audience, and the audience got it WRONG, and not by a little either. it was like one of the easier, low-valued questions.

Whats crazy about this is that Adam is by far the coolest guy in the band and nobody would recognize him. I think that it is true with most bands that the lead singer and MAYBE the lead guitarist are well know. The beatles being the exception...I dont like them and i can name all 4 plus the drummer that replaced Ringo(now thats odd because I really dont like them or follow them, they are just always talked about)

Well as expected U2 smash the sales of Oasis and Dig Out Your Soul which so far has managed 1.8 million worldwide - but do they care? NO

Noel and Liam also earned over 8 million quid in 2008 so they will be happy!

whats dig out your souls Uk sales, 1 or 2 x plat? NLOTH will likely be the same by the end of the year. Just like perviously with ATYCLB and HTDAAB vs oasis albums since the 2000's.
sales are down across the board though, killers - day & age is only 1 x plat, whereas hot fuss and sams town (incidently much better albums) have sold over 2M. snow patrols recent album also has only seen a fraction of their previous release. so relative to other bands, the gap in sales may have actually dropped

Day and Age is 3 times platinum in the UK

Dig Out Your Soul has just hit 610k in UK and it has been certified 2 x platinum

Didnt realise Killers had 3 x platinum! - dont think they have reached 900k yet

I think with touring both U2 and Oasis will sell a few more but for 2 bands that usually sell loads in the UK its a bad time. People prefer to buy crap these days

Snow Patrol have done really bad
And all the indie bands who had a bit of success before have totally flopped like Kaisers and Razorlight

We live in different times. That's why Bomb wouldn't sell as much as ATYCLB. But Viva La Vida was fall of beautiful stunning melodies, catchy hooks and good a good vocal performance, which NLOTH lacks spectacularly. VLV may never had changed the world (but then what does? Did AB or NLOTH or even Sgnt Pepper for that matter?) But people just like a CD with great humable and catchy tunes on

So are you saying that Chris Martin is a better vocalist than Bono??
My goodness ...

VLV has peaked....NLOTH still has tour, Christmas and Grammy's.
I am still betting on U2. NLOTH is early in the game.

last weeks global sales NLOTH 63,000, VLV 20,000. even if it were to continue gaining on VLV at 40,000 a week than means its going to be 2-3 years to catch up. bearing in mind VLV sales are pretty constant while NLOTH is still dropping quite fast, its likely that NLOTH will fall below VLV sometime in the next few months even WITH the 360 tour.

U2 is displaying a quiet confidence this time around and I like it......I still am not counting them out, even though I see what you are saying.

If by quiet confidence you mean sitting around on their butts while NLOTH slips further and further down the charts...then yes. Albums don't sell themselves these days...

Magnificent is like #80 in the UK in it's second week on the chart. They did absolutely nothing to help get the word out about this single except send out a couple emails.

I'm hoping NLOTH has great legs as well because it's become one of my favorite albums but I just don't see how it can continue to sell with little to no radio airplay. The tour may help a bit but think about this...It opened with like 480,000 in the US and after 2.5 months it's down to 15,000 in the US last week. Where do think it's going to be on the chart 7 months from now when it's Christmas time or 8 months from now when the grammys start? When HTDAAB won album of the year, it did get a brief surge in sales but the album was so far down on the chart that the grammy win hardly made a difference at all in the overall numbers. You can go get a sales increase of like 500% and that's great, but if you're only selling 3,000 copies that week, you're only "surging" to 15,000 which right now barely gets you in the top 50...

So yah, if the grammys were tomorrow and if Christmas was next month that'd be awesome but its all so far away it probably will hardly matter.
