Is This The Best U2 Album Ever?!

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
well, time will tell
but it wouldn't surprise me

it does seem like an accumulation of everything that they've learned
even though I rate Bomb in the bottom half of U2's output, the album did show the band mastering songwriting
this album adds genuine inspiration again to quality songwriting
I love the production
and Bono is so awesome

but yeah, we'll see

right up there with JT and AB, time will figure it out...but its way better than the last two, and I liked AYTCLB

No.

I am sure everyone's opinions will differ in days, weeks and months from now. The excitement needs to die down first.

I dont think so.

For me, it seems to have settled around #7 of 12. Behind AB, JT, TUF, Pop, Zooropa and ATYCLB. ATYCLB gets an edge over it due to In A Little While and Kite, which I feel are 2 of the best U2 songs ever. Its early yet, but around #7 I think is where its gonna end up for me, which is fine.

People should give it a few months before they make these sort of statements.

How does anything "settle" that fast?

Right now it is #3 for me, but I am prepared that it may shift somewhat, probably downward as I am just too excited right now.

Man I am starting to LOVE this record.

a couple of weak spots but such a surprise. I am (allready was) a happy camper

I don't think it's the best but it's definitely good and I'm impressed with it in comparison to the last two (not to say that I didn't like them that much, because I do). I gotta say though, this is the first album since Achtung Baby that didn't have a song that made me want to skip over it.

Ok, want to pick apart my word useage? fine. Change what I said to "Its around #7 of 12 for me." Better?

As far as I'm concerned this album comes right after Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree. Actually I would go as far to put it right behind Achtung Baby.

Great job.

I have fallen in love with U2 all over again. :D

I think the opening 3 tracks are as good as JT's opening 3, I'm willing to go that far... and the album keeps growing on me with each listen. But like a lot of people, I also reacted to HTDAAB with "I think this is their best!" at the beginning, but it hasn't aged that well for me. I also want to hear how these songs play live -- reminds me of that quote from Edge, "a great song is also a song that is great when played live"

But overall, this is incredible. It's such a mature-sounding album, musically speaking. It's as if they've integrated everything they've ever done and then pushed things in a new direction, too.

I never reacted in this way to HTDAAB. This album has so many more layers than the HTDAAB.

It's good to know that the Rolling Stone agrees with my assessment.

Then you're one of the few. Substitute NLOTH with HTDAAB and you have almost the same thread as there was on this forum a bit more than 4 years ago.

I encourage everyone to go to the archive subforum and find the thread of the HTDAAB leak release.

The similarities are striking, and it's good for a laugh. :p

I like all of U2's albums. This I would put somewhere in the middle of the pack but it's way to early. I like all the songs on NLOTH except UC.

As of now I would say it's in my top 7 but likely to move up!

I've listened to the albums a couple of more times:

And me thinks:
I absolutely adore the album ..... except for the middlesection (4,5, 6). So cut - the're gone ... And I'm left with an adorable 8-track album :heart:

Good thing we're in this time and age .... remember, when I was stuck with a tape recorder and just haaaaad to listen all songs :)

(But why the heck did they put UC, Crazy and GOYB on the album?!?!)

So to answer the question of the thread: So ... as I'm actually cutting out some songs it really can't be U2's best album .. but the remaining songs are some of U2's finest work. It seems.

This is better than Bomb... that's for sure. That's after one listen. One thing's for sure, Bono's voice is great, regardless of whether the songs are or not.

It's definitely amongst their best work, based on a day of listening.

Lets not totally diss All That You Can't Believe Behind, which is a fantastic record with some great songwriting.

No Line on the Horizon is seriously top drawer though. I liked Bomb, but it quickly got to a point where I was skipping tracks. It was badly produced, and when they binned off the original producer, you knew it was in some jip.

Hey it's everyones opinion, but Unknown Caller and If I don't go Crazy are absolutely awesome.

There is some seriously good work on this album, and some incredible musicianship. U2 are too late into their career now for anyone to rate their work as credible as Achtung Baby which is quite simply a masterpiece.

Too early to say, but based on day 1 of listening, this is pushing being their 3rd best album.

The only track that doesn't work for me is White as Snow.

I agree. The first four carry it, really.

How about RTSS and IGC? Became live favorites and well known songs, especially IGC

Plus, One Tree Hill, RHMT, MOD, Trip through your wires(yes, its a great song) and EXIT. Come on, JT is the quitessential U2 masterpiece, not even close to a weak song on there.
