Q Magazine snippets - now Consolidated (Pics added 12/29/08 & 1/1/09)

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I want something new also, but I also want posterity for the best piece of music they've recorded this decade. So I'd be excited for Mercy to see the light of day.

Or should have been on U2 18 instead of Window in the Skies. A much better career retrospective song, if you ask me, combining the lyrical Bono of the 00's with the sonic density of the 90's, and the anthemic spirit of the 80's.

Yeah, Mercy and Window would have been much better than Saints and Window.

They should have left Saints as a one off charity single.

all joking aside, i actually really like Mercy and hope it is NOT on the album.
Seriously. If we wait 4.5 years for 11 songs and one of them is something that leaked 4 years ago... well then "what the hell have you been up to for 4 years"

I want something shiny and brand new.

fucking hell yeah....my thoughts exactly!

give us some new stuff and not some redone rejects from other albums. Though I'm sure some of the stuff probably was kicked around for a while. I just can't stand Mercy and hope it never sees the light of day....at least not on an official release.

I can understand your point, but I want it to be on the album because there's zero chance it'll be played live otherwise.

I want Mercy on the album only because i want the whole world to listen this song, not
just only the die-hard fans like us.

The only thing Mercy had going for it was the fact that it didn't make the album. If it was on there, it would be just another mediocre song to blend in with the others.

And for God's sake, it's not gonna be on the new album. Not a chance. So give up hope already. You have the leaked version. For all you know, Mercy was completely reworked into something you wont even recognize on the new album, with new lyrics, melody and music and title.

= Moment Of Surrender.

Yea. it's possible. although i highly doubt it, but in my eyes that's tho only way any bit or remnant of Mercy is making it on the album.

Personally, i always thought the song was fascinating as a work-in-progress and that is all. If that's the finished product, then that song is a missed opportunity.

I love the Mercy arguments because I find it amusing that only those who can't stand the song believe that it has absolutely no chance of making the album whatsoever, while those who love it are still clinging on to whatever shred of hope still exists.

Ultimately, none of us have any clue what will happen, and the arguments are pointless. But hey, going by that criteria, almost everything written in this section is pointless.

I'm 99.9% sure Mercy is not Moment of Surrender. Possible, sure. But it doesn't sing about "dark stars" or an existential crisis, or have the line, "I did not notice the passers by/ And they did not notice me." And The Edge said Moment Of Surrender started out with Eno coming up with some chords? And, it was recorded in one take.

All signs to this NOT being Mercy.

I agree, it's probably not going to be on the album, but you never know if it'll pop up again somewhere like the Complete U2 set or as a B-side. But it's pretty obnoxious when some people are like "IT'S A SHIT SONG AND I'M 120% SURE WE'LL NEVER HEAR IT AGAIN!!" COBL was a Pop leftover and ending up being one of the singles for HTDAAB, and no one ever knows what the hell Bono's thinking, so maybe (or hopefully in my opinion) we'll see it get an official release.

Well how is that any different from any other discussion that you or I or anyone has had on this board regarding any speculative items? Its no different, so why chastise those who engage in the Mercy discussion? I'm just saying because you sound like you are trying to come across as unbiased and absent from the argument but I can bet that you lean towards either one of the opposing sides. Are you trying to be holier than thou here? Lets have Mercy, shall we.

He's probably off thinking about how much eyeliner to wear the next day, but yes, "Mercy" needs some sort of official release. It's sad how awesome that is compared to the rest of their '00s work, and I enjoy the bulk of their output from the past 8 years.

Well if you believe what was written in the Q mag about Moment of Surrender than you know for a fact that it isn't Mercy and never was. I don't know where the ridiculous assumption came from that those two songs were born of one another just because they were longer songs. Mercy was a finished song from the HTDAAB sessions, while MOS was born out of the more recent sessions according to the article. Case pretty much closed.

Now will the original Mercy be on the album? who knows. I doubt it, but who knows what the hell they'll put out.

Wait. Will.i.am collaborated on a track with them? That's fucking awesome.

Okay, this has probably been addressed before now, but I'm trying not to read 'spoilers'/article snippets in here, since I plan to buy and read the article myself as soon as it comes out.

So the magazine comes out December 31st (which is today here now, just barely.) Is that in the UK, or the US? Can I expect to find it tomorrow here in the States, or do I need to wait a week or so?
