I'm trolling around NYC trying them one by one.

It really hurts me when I bite into a dry one. It is as if somebody stabbed me right in the gut.

There's a decent cupcake shop in my neighborhood, and I think it's a small chain in the Seattle area - Cupcake Royale

They're good once in a while, but I don't think they're good enough to be worth $2 a pop. I should just start baking my own.

A few blocks from my house. We enjoyed Pretty in Pink: Sweet strawberry cupcake with real strawberry packed cream cheese icing tonight.

Cupcakes.

The hard part is when you get one that's too tall to bite both frosting AND cake at the same time. Do you bite the bottom first so that you get a bigger frosting-to-cake ratio for the next bite? Or do you satisfy your immediate needs and go for the frosting off the bat? I usually choose the former.

My favorite cupcakes to bake are vanilla with cream cheese frosting.

It's just a box mix and canister of frosting though. I've never done any from scratch. :hmm:

Schmeg, where in Indy is that? Is it close to anything I might know? I don't get down there much. :reject:

They are in the heart of Butler-Tarkington, according to their voice mail message. They're on Illinois, and I can't really think of a close landmark except, like Butler and Broad Ripple.

Edit: oh hey look at that, zoney already replied!

Frosting first!

Thanks, Zoney and Schmeg--at least I know where Butler and Broadripple are--sounds like a road trip to me! We don't have cupcake shoppes here. Used to have Mrs. Muffin (HUGE muffins!), but that's been gone for years.

That sucks. :( I have some of their baking books. They are on my never ending list of bakeries to visit during travels.

Their cupcakes were really, really dry and flavourless. The chocolate icing wasn't bad (smooth, nice amount), but the vanilla icing was way too sweet, too grainy and too much of it was slathered on. I've since had some at Buttercup Bake Shop, which was started by one of the women who co-owned Magnolia but left, and they were better but still not fantastic.

Cupcakes are delicious.

What's people's preference re: oil vs butter in their cakes? The difference being primarily moistness vs fluffiness. Do you like a bigger squoogier cake, or a smaller more succulent cake?

I prefer cupcakes with schnapps - I made those root beer ones a week ago tonight and when I had one last night they were still just as moist and tasted just as fresh as they did when I first made them.
