You are correct. There is more accountability if you have a bad experience with a cab driver than there is with an Uber driver because of the different regulatory measures they go through.

Thanks for confirming that.

I mean, I get that there are benefits to Uber (for instance, I hear it's great for people who live farther away and have trouble getting cabs). But it's a hard pass from me unless things change.

I've heard better things about Lyft in general, but still, I don't usually have to rely on cabs. I either drive (when not drinking) or can usually take a bus (if I am).

I'm not going to be an Uber advocate on this board, but honestly any woman afraid of using Uber should never - EVER - get in another taxi cab again. The cases of accusations against cab drivers number in the thousands...and that's the ones that get reported by those who can remember what happened to them, and can figure out who to accuse. Uber has way more information to go on in the event of something going wrong.

They don't have a choice if laws are broken. Which is why charges have been laid and the cases reported, obviously.

I have gotten into this argument in person too many times to go down the road again. People who like Uber REALLY like Uber and it seems like there's really zero room to debate.

I love it, but I think getting shitty at women having issues with it is pretty poor.

i've never used uber or lyft, but i used a similar service this past summer in europe. the best thing i can recommend is what i did for finding drivers: pick someone with a decent amount of positive feedback. i assume uber and lyft have rating systems too, so i definitely suggest doing that. it'll help weed out the people who book rides and never show up, creepers, etc.

I can't answer for Cobbler, but when I read your post, it certainly came across as unintentionally threatening in that, 'if you don't feel safe in an Uber, I got news for you, you aren't safe anywhere,' manner.

Emphasis on the word unintentional.

And that's supposedly being shitty towards you or anyone? I'm not threatening anything, but honestly anyone who uses the very few - however much-reported - cases of Uber issues to decide whether or not the service is for them should definitely also look into the far greater statistics involving so-called regulated taxi drivers. At some point then a person has to decide whether getting into a car with any stranger, be it Uber or Yellow Cab, is something they can be comfortable with. Because if reported cases of rape and sexual assaults are the metric to use in that decision, then taxis aren't safe either.

Man, it's nice living in Green Bay where a taxi is only really needed if you're more than 4 times over the legal alcohol limit.

Actually, I should mention that I got a taxi service to pick up and deliver Taco Bell to me one night several years ago, well before I thought about reproducing.

Thanks for the tip. And I did read your earlier post about Carpooling, which is avaliable in the US now. I like the idea of having a flat rate, since I've read about instances of people getting seriously overcharged with Uber/Lyft.

I'll definitely try one of these ridesharing services when I go to LA, because taxis seem to be pretty expensive there.

Uber

Just use common sense. Before accepting a Uber/Lyft booking, it outright tells you if your ride is going to be subject to surge pricing. If it says a surge of 2.5X or more is in effect, it could be more cost effective to take a normal cab (and request a flat rate, if you can). People aren't getting "overcharged" if they take a ride once having accepted the terms, which in their case involved them accepting the ride at the higher rate.

Also, before (or even while) you are in any paid ride situation, including a normal cab, dial up your favorite map app and chart out your destination, so you can be sure your driver is taking you on the most efficient route.

If you know you'll be in a strange city with no data, a little forethought might be in order: download a map app that allows offline use, and download the map for that city. I did this in Europe with great results, especially for just walking around.
