Since there has been a lot of discussion of student loans in recent days as US student loan debt reached $1 trillion (exceeding credit card debt), I saw this chart today and thought it was interesting:

I think what particularly surprised me is that it's become common wisdom that too many people these days are getting a college degree, which is diluting the degrees and not really leading to better employment options. But this suggests that in the US that is simply not true - you may have more people with degrees in the aggregate due to population growth, but on an individual level there really hasn't been that increase that we've discussed here.

(I posted this in the Obama thread since he has addressed this issue on several occasions, but if mods want to split it, feel free.)

Does "attained" mean "completed" or "some" there? Less than half of American college students wind up finishing their degrees. For community (2-yr./vocational) college students, which is just under half of all American college students, the completion rate is even worse.

I believe "attained" means they got to that level of education. There are separate chapters in that OECD publication that deal with graduation levels (also split them by gender, etc) - very interesting.

USA Today

President Obama taped a video message praising Planned Parenthood and telling members he will continue fighting Republican efforts to cut their federal funding.

"For you, and for most Americans, protecting women's health is a mission that stands above politics," Obama said in the video titled "A Message to Planned Parenthood Supporters."

"And yet, over the past year, you've had to stand up to politicians who want to deny millions of women the care they rely on," he said.

"Let's be clear here," Obama said. "Women are not an interest group. They're mothers and daughters and sisters and wives -- they're half of this country."

A new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows that support of women voters has shifted to Obama after recent weeks of debate about health care and contraception, giving him the lead in battleground states this November.

Congressional Republicans say they want to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood because of its support for its abortion rights and for Democratic political candidates.

Obama and congressional Democrats beat back an effort to cut funds for Planned Parenthood during the budget battles of last summer.

In the video, Obama told Planned Parenthood members that when they hear "some professional politicians" talk about getting rid of Planned Parenthood, "don't forget what they're really talking about: eliminating the funding for preventive care that millions of women rely on and leaving them to fend for themselves."

"We know this debate is far from over," Obama said. "We must continue to send a message loud and clear."

Swing States Poll: A shift by women puts Obama in lead – USATODAY.com

So the polls tell us that women are shifting to Obama?

SHOCKING.

"Women are not an interest group. They're mothers and daughters and sisters and wives -- they're half of this country."

And in Kentucky they are often one and the same. :D

Women are also conservatives and Republicans. I know they don't count as "authentic" female voices but they really do exist out here in the cornfields and oil patches of America.

Women are also conservatives and Republicans.

Yes, and many of them would probably prefer a) to keep Planned Parenthood around; and b) that the government kindly stay out of what should be between them and their families and/or doctors.

Barack Obama's Bloodiest Scandal

By Katie Pavlich

4/16/2012

Operation Fast and Furious is the deadliest and most sinister scandal in American history. A scandal so big, it’s worse than Iran-Contra and makes Watergate look like a high school prank gone wrong.

In the early days of the Obama Administration, President Obama claimed his goal was to stop the trafficking of guns from the United States into the hands of violent Mexican drug cartels. He claimed gun dealers in the United States were responsible for sending guns to Mexico. Both of his claims were lies.

In order to push his lies and policies built around them, with a goal of implementing harsher gun control laws and reinstating the assault weapons ban, President Obama packed his administration full of anti-Second Amendment zealots. After all, personnel is policy.

In my new book, Fast and Furious: Barack Obama’s Bloodiest Scandal and Its Shameless Coverup, I document the conspiracy of senior Obama officials to subvert the Second Amendment, which led directly to the murders of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, I.C.E. Agent Jaime Zapata and countless, faceless lives in Mexico. It debunks the Obama administration’s lies, denials and excuses. This administration was willing to use humans as collateral damage to push a political agenda, and had no shame in doing so. Now, the administration has no shame in covering up their reckless actions.

Since just moments after Brian Terry was killed in the Arizona desert on December 15, 2010 by Mexican cartel thugs, carrying AK-47s provided to them by the Obama Justice Department through Operation Fast and Furious, the FBI, Homeland Security, ATF, Justice Department and the White House have been engaged in a full scale cover-up. These are simply names of government agencies, but who are the people behind the cover-up?

I unravel a tangled web connecting President Obama, Eric Holder, Janet Napolitano and a number of advisors and political appointees behind Fast and Furious. These officials have deep loyalties to each other and their anti-Second Amendment ideology dating as far back as the Clinton Administration. In fact, many key Fast and Furious players have deep ties to Chicago and helped craft the 1994 Clinton assault weapons ban legislation.

If the majority of American people knew Fast and Furious like they know Solyndra or the GSA scandal, they would be outraged. Despite very few exceptions, the media has been complicit in the cover-up of Obama’s bloodiest scandal by ignoring and refusing to report about it. Why? To protect the President. This scandal, one that has left hundreds of bodies in its wake, would be deadly to the administration. This is the scandal that will bring President Obama down in November, so long as the American people know its details.

Over the weekend, GOP Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney officially made Fast and Furious a general election issue. His advisors are now directly pointing to the scandal as an example of how the Obama Administration used in its first term to “provide cover for potential efforts to restrict Second Amendment rights." In the book, I provide the documents and interviews to prove it.

The Obama administration is acting guilty, not innocent, in its actions to continually stonewall and deny the truth. Any American who believes the President, the Attorney General of the United States, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and a long list of other government officials responsible for this reckless program are not above the law, need this book.

Operation Fast and Furious wasn't a "botched" program. It was a calculated and lethal decision to purposely place thousand of guns into the hands of ruthless criminals. The operation was a coordinated and planned effort not to track guns, but to arm thugs south of the border for political gain. Eric Holder should be removed from office for incompetence, dishonesty and charged with perjury. My sources, documented in the book, say Janet Napolitano may also face charges of perjury and potentially obstruction of justice. It is time for President Obama to take responsibility, denounce the operation and fire those involved.

I remember the outrage when we went into Afghanistan and (mostly) Iraq. To me its high time we GTFO of Afghanistan, people are losing sight of the mission, Bin Laden is dead, its time to go. I know when haven't heard much lately in the way of names of the fallen, so this is for them. I hope they can come home soon.

Afghanistan casualties since the first of the year.

Wholeheartedly agree it's well past time for us to get the hell out of there. I'm tired of seeing the names pile up, too.

As for the gun story, anything talking about "subverting the Second Amendment" (the horror!) has me suspicious right away. I agree with PhilsFan, I'm not exactly seeing how that plan would be a good way to try and do whatever it is with the Second Amendment Pavlich thinks they're going to do.

This scandal has had 3 books already released on it. A lot of the first two have already been debunked for the most part. Glenn and Hannity have been foaming at the mouth about this for over a year, and then they have some expert on their show about it, and by the next time they talk about it there's a new expert saying the complete opposite of the last one. So every right wing hack is trying to complete the story before it actually breaks.

Everything I've read so far from all sides of the aisle it points to a FBI and DOJ screw up. Bigger than Iran Contra or Watergate? No. Sinister? No.

Karzai wants 'at least $2 billion' a year from US - Yahoo! News

..

Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday said he wanted "at least $2 billion" a year from the United States after it withdraws its troops in 2014.

Karzai said the US should specify in a partnership agreement to be signed between his country and the US how much money it will give to Afghanistan after they leave.

"They (US) say we will give you money, but will not specify the amount. We say give us less, but write it down," Karzai told a group of university professors and students in Kabul.

"We want them to write down that America will give for Afghanistan's security $2 billion a year -- or at least two billion a year", he said. "If they want to give us more, they are welcome."

Karzai's comments came a day after he laid most of the blame for an 18-hour assault by squads of Taliban insurgents in Kabul Sunday on intelligence failures by NATO forces.

"The terrorists' infiltration in Kabul and other provinces is an intelligence failure for us and especially for NATO and should be seriously investigated," Karzai said in a statement.

The 130,000-strong US-led NATO force helping the Afghan government fight a decade-long Taliban insurgency is due to end combat operations and pull out by the end of 2014 and the two countries are in talks about their future relations.

Kabul has already achieved two preconditions for signing the treaty -- full control over the US-run Bagram prison and controversial special forces night raids against Taliban insurgents.

Officials on both sides have expressed hope that a strategic partnership agreement governing post-2014 ties could be signed ahead of a NATO summit in Chicago in May.

"We don't want them to spend a lot of money here, we would like to help them save their money, but give some to us too," Karzai said.

The US led an invasion of Afghanistan to topple the hardline Islamist Taliban regime for harbouring Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden after the September 11 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.

Since then it has led a NATO fight in support of Karzai's government against a Taliban insurgency, in which nearly US 2,000 troops have died, according to monitoring group icasualties.org.

How about, we leave NOW and we're not giving you shit!

^Hell yes, They don't show you the full photo here, but you know who is sitting on the other end of that tub, living it up on our dime?

Yep, you guessed. Obama!

And anybody else notice the way Obama and the Dems rushed to defend this waste of Big Government Big Spending!

INDY, help me out by throwing a few links to back me up on this!

Haha, Stephen Colbert said that on his show, too :D.

Government waste and criminal malfeasance or,

Keynesian stimulus?

Is there really a difference?

When Republican presidents get properly punished for any ethical scandals that happened on their watches, then we'll talk about punishing Obama for this one.

This is a really dumb situation for all involved, no question. It's absurd and they all should be fired for wasting money so horridly.

But I'm pretty darn sure Obama didn't okay this or would support them doing this.

(Now, see, if they'd just been your average rich people not involved with the government, blowing that sort of money on that kind of excess instead of giving that money back through paying more in taxes or helping out their communities and such would be okay! 'Cause they're rich and they can use their money as they wish!)

Gives a new meaning to the term "puppy chow"

Romney aides point out Obama ate dog meat as a child

WASHINGTON -- In the latest tit-for-tat in Mitt Romney's lingering dog problem, aides to the Republican candidate are gleefully pointing out that President Barack Obama ate dog meat as a child.

The tale of Romney's Irish setter Seamus -- who traveled in a crate atop the family's station wagon on a 1983 trip from Boston to Canada -- has dogged the former Massachusetts governor for years.

Romney and his wife were most recently asked about the incident during an interview Monday with ABC's Diane Sawyer and Ann Romney's defense that Seamus "loved" traveling on top of the family car drew snickers from some Democrats and dog lovers.

Biting back Tuesday, conservative news site The Daily Caller made note of a passage in Obama's book "Dreams from My Father," in which the president recounted some of his adventurous eats while living in Indonesia with his stepfather Lolo Soetoro from age six to 10.

"With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chili peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy)," part of the passage reads.

Daily Caller blogger Jim Treacher commented, "Say what you want about Romney, but at least he only put a dog on the roof of his car, not the roof of his mouth."

Romney's campaign quickly seized on the anecdote. On Tuesday night, top Romney aide Eric Fehrnstrom re-posted a tweet originally made in January by Obama adviser David Axelrod that showed a picture of the president riding inside a car with his pet Bo, a Portuguese water dog.

In a jab at Romney, Axelrod's original caption read, "How loving owners transport their dogs." But Fehrnstrom commented, "In hindsight, a chilling photo."

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams also linked to an ABC report on the story on Twitter, saying, "Not the headline Team Obama was looking for."

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt fired back, tweeting, "What's the next attack [Fehrnstrom] and the RNC will surface on a 6-10 year old?"

Asked about the back and forth during an interview with Ohio radio station WLW Wednesday, Romney said, "This campaign is going to ultimately become about jobs not dogs."
