THE FIRST EPISTLE OF PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE
CORINTHIANS

CHAPTER 13
Paul extols the high status of charity—Charity, a pure love, excels and exceeds almost all else.

1 THOUGH I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

2 And though I have the gift of aprophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity denvieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her bown, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Not necessarily the version of St. Paul's words that I would have liked to have posted, but I think the gist of what St. Paul is saying is clear.

Christian actions of love and concern for others, especially for those who are less fortunate, speak louder to God than "christian" words.

Happy St. Valentine's Day!

A prayer by Saint Francis :
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred . . . let me sow love
Where there is injury . . . pardon
Where there is doubt . . . faith
Where there is despair . . .hope
Where there is darkness . . . light
Where there is sadness . . .joy
Divine Master,
grant that i may not so much seek
To be consoled . . .as to console
To be understood . . .as to understand,
To be loved . . . as to love
For it is in giving . . .that we receive,
It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned,
It is in dying . . .that we are born to eternal life

Another great example of REAL Christian Love in action.

or according to these under 10 geniuses...

When my grandma got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her
toenails anymore. So my grandpa does it for her now all the time, even when
his hands got arthritis too. That's love. Rebecca- age 8

When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You
just know that your name is safe in their mouths. Billy- age 4

Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving Cologne
and they go out and smell each other. Kari- age 5

Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French

Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip
before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK. Danny- age 7

Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing,
you still want to be together and you talk more. My mommy and my daddy are
like that. They look gross when they kiss. Emily- age 8

Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening
presents and listen. Bobby- age 7

If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who

During my piano recital, I was on stage and I was scared. I looked at
all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the

My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing
me to sleep at night. Clare- age 6

Love is when mommy gives daddy the best piece of chicken. Elaine-age 5

When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars

it, you should say it a lot. People forget. Jessica-age 8

And the winner was a 4 year old child whose next door neighbor was an
elderly man who had just lost his wife. When the child saw the man cry, the
little boy went over into the man's yard, climbed on top of the man's lap,
and just sat there. When the boy's mother asked him what he'd said to the
neighbor, the little boy said, Nothing, I just helped him cry.

These are my personal favorites, but the whole list is just adorable regardless. Can't say I disagree with any of those definitions, either.

Thank god for kids like these-we need more people like them in this world.

Love is real , real is love
Love is feeling , feeling love
Love is wanting to be loved

Love is touch, touch is love
Love is reaching, reaching love
Love is asking to be loved

Love is you
You and me
Love is knowing
we can be

Love is free, free is love
Love is living, living love
Love is needed to be loved

Why is Plastic Ono Band the greatest album ever (non-U2)?

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.

Some really great responses so far - thanks everyone for posting.

I was originally going to post the children's ideas of Love because I am a preschool teacher and I love to hear the little ones try to explain life.

They often understand it better than adults.

Pearl Jam - "You Are"

Love is a tower
And you're the key
Leading me higher
When you let me in

You are a tower of
Strength to me
The darkening hour
Sees light again

Love is a tower
Of strength to me
I am the shoreline
But you're the sea

love is not all you need.

you need food, first. then clothing, shelter, clean water, immunizations, a basic level of education, freedom from oppressive military juntas ...

If it the Love that St. Paul talks about above, Love IS really all you need
because Love will motivate all of us to do the right things toward others.

Love is the willingness to compromise. Love is commitment.
Love is hard work. It is a behavior as much as a feeling.
