And I'd also say that Bono is right.
Giving $$ to any charity is nice - but if the charity doesn't do the right things with the money, you can give forever and the problem will remain. It's fine to buy RED items or donate to time or money to ONE, but really, the issue here is finding a way to help stabilize an area. To do that, one needs infrastructure. No more corrupt dictators running off with hundreds of millions of dollars meant to be used for the people of the country. Instead, they need jobs - jobs that help create roads, food, schools, hospitals, etc. As those places are built, more jobs are needed to run and maintain each area. So job creation will help people get out of poverty. And job creation will help bring relief from starvation and disease. It won't happen overnight. But donating just money or food isn't the answer. We'll be donating forever. A one time emergency situation due to natural disaster is different. But in Africa, this has been going on for decades - it's time to change.
As for Bono's 1981 statement - of course they wanted success. Who doesn't? Those of you who are in school - if I asked you, "Do you worry that, after all your hard work in college, that obtaining a high-paying job will spoil you?" I doubt your answer will be, "Yes - and I hope to find the lowest paying job available such that I stay true to myself."
