My mother is watching the Miss Teen USA pageant.

Mom: What's the 51st state?
Me: What? There are only 50 states.
Mom: But there are 51 girls.
Me: Puerto Rico, maybe? It's not a state though.

Turns out it was District of Columbia. But is DC really big enough to warrant having it's own contestant? Are they doing this just to confuse middle aged Kentucky housewives?
