I want to know more about these legendary bands. (more than getting a Best of just knowing the hits)

I'd like to have a listen to 3 or 4 of their best albums:

The Who - what else beside Who's next ? Should I try Tommy/Quadrophenia or their non-rock opera albums ?

Led Zeppelin - not sure where to start either. I, II, III, IV ?

Here are my suggestions.

Zeppelin
1. IV
2. Physical Graffiti
3. Houses of the Holy
4. III
5. I

The Who
1. Quadrophenia
2. Who's Next
3. Endless Wire
4. The Who Sell Out
5. The Who By Numbers

Led Zeppelin -

Start with IV

Then Physical Graffitti

If you like the softer/folksy side, then go to III, Houses of the Holy

If you like the harder stuff, go to II and Presence (most underrated Zep album imho)

If you like it all, go to the How the West was won live album

Finally, the bookends, I and In through the out door

Zep, def get How The West Was Won.. The best live album besides Kiss's Alive! (which inspired bands like Poison, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Eddie Van Halen, Eddie Veddar of Pearl Jam to start playing instruments..) and Cheap Trick: live at the Budokan Hall..

Zeppelin:

1. Houses Of The Holy
2. IV
3. II

The Who:

1. Live At Leeds (get the deluxe version if possible)
2. Who's Next
3. The Who Sell Out

For Lep Zep, IV is the obvious one, but Houses Of The Holy and III are essential, IMO.

I swear Phanan and I are of one mind!

For The Who I only know Who's Next, so I'm no help there.

But I LOVE Zep! I would say "IV" then "Houses of the Holy" then "III" and then "I" or "II" and then "Physical Graffiti".

Although, there is something to be said for going in order. There is definite merit to that.

"III" is my personal fav, followed closely by "Houses of the Holy".

But, in truth, you really can't go wrong with any of the Zep mentioned so far.

Led Zeppelin

Please!!!!!! Pearl Jam cannot be mentioned in the same breath as Poison, Skid Row, Motley Crue or Kiss. PJ's discography is so much more diverse and interesting!

As for Zeppelin, if you want to have the best first impression, go with IV. You simply cannot go wrong! Amazing! It's in the Top 10 albums of all-time IMO. Then you could either get II (my next favorite) or just go in order, I, II, III etc.

I don't know much about the Who. Quadrophenia is the only album I have. And I like it somewhat.

Live at Leeds, Quadrophenia, Who's Next, Tommy.

Physical Graffiti, Houses, IV, III.

Psst. They liked them more back then, too. Just look at the difference in album sales.

Personally, I adore them both. I recall a thread not too long ago where several people, myself included, debated the relative merits of each band, and it was a very interesting discussion. Perhaps I can find it somewhere.

The Who:

1. Quadrophenia
2. Tommy
3. Live at Leeds
4. any of their single releases
5. The Who by Numbers

Led Zeppelin:
1. IV
2. Houses of the Holy
3. III
4. Physical Graffiti
5. II

Personally, I prefer The Who, but Zeppelin's a good band as well. They're a little more hit or miss for me

Maybe it has something to do with Zep being much better than the Who?

Oh, come now...The Who are better at some things. I highly doubt a Led Zeppelin rock opera about a paraplegic boy named Timmy with awesome frisbee talents would have been nearly as good as Tommy.

:shifty: Then again...
