this kinda proves how babe ruth goes ahead of federer... you know nothing about baseball, live in a country where baseball probably ranks somewhere behind lawn darts in popularity... yet you know who babe ruth is.

i believe the criteria for "best sportsman" of all time should be someone who crosses borders, both national and cultural. babe ruth was one of the first athletes to do that. even in countries that couldn't tell you one rule about baseball... they've heard of babe ruth.

he still wouldn't be #1 on my list... but he's up there.

ali is number one in my eyes, and the only person on the same stratosphere as him as pele. jordan is a distant third.

and as for the person who says hardly no one plays basketball and hockey worldwide, what are you smoking? basketball is widly considered to be the second most popular sport in the world in terms of participation and viewership, trailing only soccer.

and not for nothing, baseball is the national sport of the USA, Japan, Taiwan, Venezuela, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Nicauragua, Panama and Puerto Rico. it may not be played everywhere, but it is not "just the US and Japan."

Agree with Headache, and indeed his rankings.

Still I'll cast a vote, since no one else has, for Phedippides, who ran all the way from Marathon to Athens and died, thus pioneering the modern marathon.

Valid point about American football, but hockey is hardly an American sport, baseball is played throughout the Western hemisphere as well as in Asia, and basketball is pretty universal too. They certainly trump tennis & golf...though I agree re: soccer.

Pinetree could take Ali.

I think every Kiwi (and maybe some Aussies or Scots) knows exactly what I mean.

you can argue that ali wasn't the greatest technical boxer of all time, and you could probably win that argument.

but ali was a cultural icon the likes of which we've never seen before, on top of being an undeniable talent. he changed the game, for better, for worse and everywhere in between.

"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans.

"Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert? Also, the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barrow? To have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow, Miller Huggins? Then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology, the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy? Sure, I'm lucky.

"When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift - that's something. When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies - that's something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles with her own daughter - that's something. When you have a father and a mother who work all their lives so you can have an education and build your body - it's a blessing. When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed - that's the finest I know."

In all seriousness though

Boxing - Ali
Hockey - Gretzky
Basketball - Wilt
Baseball - Babe
Football - Pele
Motorsport - Senna
Am Football - Montana
Crickett - nobody cares

And everyone just says Bret Hart because he died.

So what is that, like five people, a didgeridoo, and sixty sheep?
