Can they still track my moves? (computer question)

Not that I think my boss would really care, but is there some way they can see what internet sites I have visited even if I delete my cookies and clear my history at the end of every day?

Yeah they could if they have some sort of monitoring software setup, or proxy software setup for internet access. Generally the rule of the thumb is that if you are on a company computer, the company can know what you are doing, and if they do not track, they could start at any time.

Right, they sure can, regardless of how clean you keep your machine.

You're most likely going through some kind of company server to get out to the internet, and anything you do online can be monitored from that machine. There's no way you'd know it was going on either.

Maybe you could discretely ask around if anyone knows if they monitor. It really depends on how anal your workplace and your IT people are. Some of them sit there all day just watching what you do, some log but don't really look, etc.

And like Techie said, if they don't monitor now, they could at any time.

Or, more appropriately, not wearing.

The company I used to work for had a disclaimer each time we logged on to let you know they are watching. How much they actually watched isn't known. But I do know if I had a problem with my computer, the IT guys could log on from their computer and see exactly what was on my screen. By law they are suppose to inform you if they are going to be monitoring you at any given time. (or it used to be a law) Of course who says they follow the law...

In all seriousness, I worked for the technical support department while I went to college. When I worked in the computer labs, I helped bust people who were viewing porn. Even after a person deleted history and the cookies, the IT people were able to still find a list of the websites that had been visited. I'm not sure how they did it, but they did.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you get your job done and don't spend all your time online they shouldn't care about the occassional internet use.

At my last job they told us no personal internet use for any reason but then I'd walk into my boss's office and she was always online looking up stuff that clearly had nothing to do with work. No one ever said anything to me the 10 months I was there about my daily Interference use. I didn't have work to do all the time and my boss knew it. I guess that was always going to be my excuse if they ever called me out about using the internet that they never gave me work when I said I didn't have any. But anyway...After working at several places in the past few years that have internet access and a zero personal internet use policy, I've found as long as the work is getting done, you're not looking at anything offensive, and you keep it to a minimun then no one will say anything to you.

They can read it. The guys at my workplace do. Earlier this year I needed an image for a safety and health publication. I googled "explosion' and some of the pages that appeared before my eyes

And then there was a tonne of popups of this stuff. I ended up turning my computer off at the powerpoint to stop it.

I went and told my boss, just in case. He didnt seem too fussed.

Later on in the week some of the computer guys were on our floor, saw me and laughed their heads off. Apparently they had a ball monitoring me trying to shut down all the porn.

So yeah, they can see what you are doing.
