GLAZERS THROW OUT BUSINESS PLAN

By Ed Wednesday 16th May 2007

Hence the price rises.

From the MEN
Manchester United's ticket price increases are more than FOUR TIMES bigger than the club originally intended, according to documents leaked to the Manchester Evening News.

And the fact that the Glazer family has ripped up its initial plan to peg back prices this summer has been slammed as a cynical attempt to cash in on the club's success this season.

The documents also indicate that this year's whopping increases will not be the last, as the club has stated that it intends to `maximise revenue generated through ticket prices and enhanced stadium facility.'

That indicates that prices will continue to rise until empty seats begin to appear at Old Trafford.

Last summer, the Glazer family was only intending to put prices up by 2.5 per cent this year, after introducing a huge hike of 12.5 per cent in their first year of ownership.

But the family ignored that business plan and instead came up with an average increase of more than 10 per cent with prices in some areas of the ground rising as high as 14 per cent.

That increase ignored calls from supporters' groups, MPs and other bodies within the game for the huge influx of money from the Premier League's bumper overseas TV rights deal to be used to peg back ticket prices.

But the United Supporters' Trust, MUST, believes the Glazers are playing a dangerous game by toying with fan loyalty.

A spokesman for the group said: "Many of our members have complained about these huge price rises for the third season running. Paying another 14% on top of last year's rise will prevent many of them from renewing their season tickets.

"If you add on to that the cost of the compulsory automatic cup scheme, which could be £250 a year or more, going to Old Trafford is becoming unaffordable for many traditional supporters.

"There is also resentment about the way their love and loyalty towards the club is being exploited under the Glazers' ownership when the club is making so much money out of the new TV deal and sponsorships.

"It seems clear from these leaked documents that the Glazers decided that they could get away with higher increases than originally planned, because Sir Alex has done such a fantastic job with the team producing the most exciting football at Old Trafford for years and winning the league in some style.

"From the murmurings we are hearing from United season ticket holders, the Glazers may well be misjudging just how far they can push things. They seem not to care about the fans if they can treat loyal supporters in this way."

United have flown in the face of current football trends, with Manchester City freezing their prices and clubs such as Bolton and Blackburn reducing the cost of some tickets. The spiralling cost of Premiership football has brought a fightback in the game, with the MEN's own `Make it Fair for Fans' campaign receiving widespread backing, including from sports minister Richard Caborn, PFA head Gordon Taylor and England boss Steve McClaren.

Asked to comment on the contents of the document and on the discontent among many fans over the price rises, a Glazer spokesman said: "We won't comment on these matters beyond saying that ticket prices represent excellent value for fans."

A United spokesman followed the same line, adding: "We believe that the prices we have set reflect not only demand for tickets at Old Trafford but also represents good value in the context of Premier League football."

And there are still some F***ING Idiots who say they're good for UNITED, don't anyone dare say UNITED are champs because of those F***ING W*****S, its inspite of them, not because of them.

As I've stated before, most long standing, match going fans I know personally would rather see the club endure a period of decline if it meant them F***ING T*****S F*****G OFF, but, unfortunately it looks less & less likely now, I really do think I'll never set foot inside OT again, as more & more fans are priced out of attending football matches, Sir Matt must be turning in his grave, God rest his soul.

A 14% rise in prices is shocking. It's sad because it will almost certainly put off local working class mancunians who can't afford to go anymore and the ground will be full of even more, in the words of roy keane, 'prawn sandwich brigade' plastic fans which will be detrimental to the atmosphere at the ground.

I'm planning on getting a season ticket next year at villa but if the board were to put prices up by 14% then there's no way i'd be able to afford one.

Most Man Utd fans are not proper fans. They are unable to be, because they are based in foreign countries where EPL coverage is not a top priority.

Man Utd is the most "bandwagonised" club in the world, a "dishonour" previously held by the Chicago Bulls.

So 'fandom' is measured by your proximity to the city of your favorite club? If I move from Manchester to someplace else for a job or something, do I become less of a fan?

Not at all. If this was the case, at least you had some prior and authentic connection to the club.

Unlike many of these Asian fans of Man Utd who only supoport the club because they have had success both on and off the field. and have had David Beckham playing for them.

What I will say though, is that if you were in Australia, most Man Utd fans are not necessarily proper fans of football as a sport.

Awful match apart from the goal...If anyone caught the Sevilla v Espanyol UEFA cup final last week, that was an amazing match.

Tis why I still think the Spanish league is superior to the English, if there was a league match up with every team playing the team in the same position, I think the Spanish would win quite comfortably, apart from the top 4 matches being quite close, in nearly all the others I would favour a Spanish team.

The top 4 teams in Spain are sperated by 2 points.....now that is a competition!

Last years cup final was about a million times better than this years, even if the west ham scumbags came perilously close to winning it.

& where exactly are the top 4 spanish teams in the champs/lge?, whilst 3 of the top 4 English clubs made it to the semi's, & more English clubs have reigned as Champs of Europe than any other nation, & more clubs from England have won European trophies than any other nation, the English league title has been won by far more clubs than any other major league, except Germany, tied equally with 23 different champions, no English club has ever dominated its domestic league, in the way Real, & Barca have in spain, Juve has in Italy, & Bayern has in Germany, God, learn about the HISTORY of the game in general before making ridiculous comments about something you obviously know very little about, football goes back beyond the year 2000, did you know that?

And for Yeovil fans, Yeovil FC are FAR more than just a football club.

In the 21st Century, the vast majority of Man Utd fans are based outside of the land of Pom.

We must have about 500,000 folk down under who claim to support Man Utd. Probably 90% of them epitomise the term "bandwagoning."

This is by no means an anti-Man Utd jibe (it could apply to Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham) , but the reality is that if you were to compare the percentage of genuine, passionate fans for Yeovil with the percentage of fans who are equally as passionate for Man Utd, Yeovil would probably have a more pasisonate fan base.

It's unfortunate in this globalised world that passion is measured by quantity rather than quality.

Most Man Utd fans are not proper fans. They are unable to be, because they are based in foreign countries where EPL coverage is not a top priority.

Man Utd is the most "bandwagonised" club in the world, a "dishonour" previously held by the Chicago Bulls.

Jesus, do you specialise in talking total bollocks, all that crap about " proper" fans, tell me then, 2 years ago United played Exeter in the cup, 10,000 Exeter "fans" travelled to OT, when they normally have less than 3,000 for a league match, but because they're a small club are they all "proper" fans, absolute BOLLOCKS, in that tiny little world you inhabit, unless someone lives within a 5-10 mile radius of a stadium they can't be real "fans" absolute total CRAP!
Also the Cup final in 2004 Utd v. Millwall, Utd were allocated 5,000 or so more tickets than millwall, who in turn complained to anyone who'd listen, but they'd still been allocated 10,000 more tickets than their average attendance, so where had all these "proper" fans come from, people who'd never been to see, or never again would go to see millwall, all of a sudden they're "proper" fans, coz they "support" a little club, absolute & total F***ING BOLLOCKS! 1 point I'll agree on is, yes a lot of people say they support Utd, & don't know a lot, if anything about the clubs history, but every major club in the world has that kind of "fan" & they BORE me almost as much as this old chestnut, " gloryhunters," but stop being catergorical about "most" UNITED fans, just because someone lives half way around the world, & can't get to OT, doesn't mean they can't be passionate about the club, & if you need to ask why, or how they can be so passionate about that, or any other club, then IMO its YOU who know so little about football, & how it can illogically grab hold of, & take over, otherwise rational, & intelligent human beings.

I think i might be a "improper" fan. I am still learning much of Utd.'s history. I would probably be seen as a bandwagon fan as well since I didn't really like football until the world cup. I latched on to Man U. b/c my best friend has been a fan for many many years.

But I don't think this makes me less of a football fan. I am in love with the game. I play and watch it more than my once favorite sport basketball.

Funny thing about this all is I support Utd., and the Chicago Bulls. Though, I went to Bulls games when they were absolutely awful too. Just thought it ironic that I am that fan you speak of, but I am truely a supporter and fan of both teams.

Sorry for the double post. I just caught the game this afternoon. The first half ought not be mentioned for the poor play. Remember that beautiful run by Ronaldo in the first half? Yup, and Rooney took it offsides...doh!

As for the second half, talk about chances. Giggs Giggs Giggs! He had the best chances and OH!! his corners were pathetic! Poor passing by both teams. Then, 1st extended time, great cross by Rooney and GIGGS! wtf happened...:| That was Man Utd.'s chace and it was muffed off some part of Giggs' leg...not pretty. :(

The best play of the game, a great flip to Drogba. My question, watch that play again and ask why did Van Der Sar hesitate? I don't mean to point fingers or take away from the play, but if you see it again, watch Van Der Sar. He goes, stops and then GOES! too late.

Finally, Fletcher sure did try hard to give you Chelea fans prime opportunities too. ;)

Good Day

To be fair most of the people who get labelled as "gloryhunters" who i have met in my lifetime have actually been very knowledgable about football and are probably as much as a fan as i am (it's only this last year or so that i've been really passionate about going to matches). My best mate at uni is a man united fan from bridlington in east yorkshire, the other side of the country from manchester and he watches, plays and knows loads about the beautiful game. we've had many a long conversation about footy. Every now and then i'll wind him up about being a glory supporter but it's in jest and i know he is very passionate about the game.

However as someone who grew up in the 90's it was quite odd at school because there were more man united fans in my class than there were birmingham city fans (most were villa). Now i hate birmingham city but looking back it is quite sad that barely anyone in my class chose to support them simply because united were the better team. Some of the kids did eventually change allegiances a couple of years later and decided to support birmingham or villa (at that age kids get easily influenced by their mates i think). But that was my experience anyway growing up.

i'll freely admit i do get annoyed when united, chelsea or liverpool fans who live miles away from their team of choice come up to me and tell me how good their team is and how many trophies they've won this year. But as jimmmm said in an earlier post, it is the nature of the beast and the best teams in the country will get the most exposure on tv and people at a young age will latch onto it wherever they come from. anyway it's late and i'm kinda rambling so i'll stop now.

I'm citing Man Utd as an example. Ac Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool are all in a similar position.

There are non-football fans who "support" a team in the EPL. More often than not, that team is Man Utd. That is a fact. Some do not watch football, let alone properly enjoy football as a sport.

What I'm stating, and this is a legitimate observation, is that you are inevitably going to have a greater % of the more passionate and "proper" Man Utd fans living closer to club's base. That's not to say that a Man Utd fan living in Mongolia is going to be devoid of total passion for or commitment to the club, but merely to state that both the passion and commitment of a fan to Man Utd FC is going to ring more true for fans who have a stronger geographical or ancestral tie with the club.

Take many of the Man Utd fans based in East Asia (Japan, China). Many were captivated almost purely because Beckham played for 'em. Beckham moved on to Real Madrid, and the passion and commitment to Man Utd would have been very much reduced in this part of the world. They jumped on the Real Madrid bandwagon.

More so then perhaps any other football club, you are likely to have the most "casual and unknowledgable" football fans wearing a Man Utd/Real Madrid football jersey. It's like all the kids who wore Chicago Bulls caps in the 90's yet knowing bugger all about basketball.

And regarding the Exeter example, there would indeed have been bandwagoning there, but purely on a local scale and not on an international one.

How many folk outside of England do you see wearing an Exeter or Yeovil jersey?

Bandwagoning can be measured in many ways, and if you fo to Australia, you'll find many Man Utd "fans" who wouldn't even classify themselves as "football fans."

Woah relax dude, way too much crap talking there, you're the only one being ridiculous...i'm saying the Spanish league is currently the best, not 'best league ever'...I think it is better and has been better in the past few years than the English league.

The Spanish teams had a crap season as far as the Champions League, but throughout the league I think the Spanish teams, once again I emphasise currently, team for team are better than the English, except for the top 4, though I think any of the top 4 Spanish teams are better in 'pure' footballing terms than either Chelsea or Liverpool.

I didn't need your history lesson thanks, I know all that well enough, so relax with your quick assumptions.

Okay, the fighting and nastiness needs to stop. You are particularly out of line, jimmmm. Knock it off.

So who will win tonight?

I say Milan, revenge is a great motivator:mad:

Milan need to get a really good striker though, Gilardino is fine, but Inzaghi is way past it and Oliviera is crap.

Anyone here play Football Manager Manager....greatest game ever creat:drool:

Ac Milan have far better players, but Benitez is a top tactician and you can never discount Liverpool in European competition.

Ac Milan 2-nil

Gattuso is a legend.

Milan have the better players but they don't have a real strike force (in europe anyway since ronaldo is cup tied). All of their goals come from midfield and this area is Liverpools strong point so i think whoever wins the midfield battle will win the match. I expect mascherano to stick to Kaka like a limpet and try not to allow him any space but Kaka is a rare breed of player in that he can be tightly marked and still find room to pass, shoot and influence the game, much like Zidane was able to.

The game needs an early goal i think or else it could be a real snoozefest. One thing we don't want is a repeat of Saturday

I doubt it could be as bad as Saturday, it should be extremely passionate at the very least if not high class football.

What's up with poor finals of late?:eyebrow:

Ah well I'm glad AC won, they be my Italian team as such.

Maldini has won as many Champions League finals as Liverpool have....that amuses me:wink:

Pipo is what the second highest scorer in Champions league history now? I probably shouldn't have written him off before the match.

Anyway the wheelings and dealings of the transfer market to look forward to now.....Hopefully next season Liverpool and Arsenal will step up a gear and give Chelsea and Utd some proper competition....Maybe Tottenham will take that big step up as well if they sign right in the summer.....Aston Villa I reckon will also challenge for a UEFA cup spt this time round.

A question for the Americans here, do many latinos play in the MLS?

Or if they are decent enough players do they generally end up playing in Mexico etc?

The only American players I can think of are either black or white, the only one with Mexican background is Bocanegra.

I'm absolutely gutted over the final. Awful match. Should have been a repeat of 2005.

Liverpool had more of the game and passed it around better but their crossing and shooting was awful. 10 shots off target speaks for itself. Rafa really needs to invest in some decent strikers this summer because what he's got now isn't good enough.
