Rock stars lead crusade against Aids in Africa
Rock music legends are in Cape Town to kick-start a global crusade against HIV/Aids in Africa. The musicians, who include Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor, as well as Dave Stewart of the Eurhythmics, are responding to an appeal by former President Nelson Mandela.
The musicians are collaborating with some of the country's finest artists to record a number of songs. They were written by artists, including Bono from U2, the late Joe Strummer from Clash, Stewart and Queen.
The songs will be performed at a concert on Robben Island, to raise funds for Mandela's crusade against Aids in Africa, planned for later this year. They will also be available around the world. All people have to do is dial Mandela's prison number 4-6-6-6-4 on their cell phones.
Stewart says: "The idea for this concert is to reach out globally, by using Mandela's prison number 46664, and that is one of the songs we have written and get that working on a mobile global cellular networks so that people can hear some of the music and while they are listening, donate worldwide."
The cost of the call will go to the Nelson Mandela Foundation and associated charities.
