Mullen or not Mullen?

I had a discussion with a friend some minutes ago about Larry's children. About the surnames of his children, exactly.
He and Ann aren't married so are they really called Mullen? I mean, I dunno how it is in Ireland, but in Germany the children have the surname of their mother (if she isn't married) and they can't have the surname of their father. So, does anyone know anything about this? Mullen or Acheson? Just for quitting this stupid argument...

Larry seems to be such a private person that a lot of information on him is scarce. I haven't a clue about this. I don't know Irish laws, but I'm going to assume that his children are taking their father's name regardless of the marriage situation or not.

im from ireland and most of the time here the children take the fathers name regardless

yeah you can choose wheather to have father or mothers name- most usually take their fathers surname though
