Set for 2005-04-01, Anaheim.

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
The "encore" seemed like a break and people totally didnt expect them not to come back after 40...the place was dark for like 4 minutes after, leading people to think the guys were coming back out, only to boo loudly when the house lights came on...
I hope the band knows it was due to us wanting them to play longer not out of disappointment, cos they served up some powerful stuff. I still have a lump in my throat!
Amazing show...

Wow, Love and peace opening? Mysterious ways and I still haven't found.. are back.

Hope they keep Running to stand still.

edit oops I read too fast - liking Running to stand still in the set.

On second thought, what a thunder of an opening that had to be- Love and peace, Sunday bloody sunday and Bullet. Interesting that Vertigo and City of blinding lights went into the encore. Guess the only rule on this tour will be there are no rules!

Tomorrow night, I would be incredibly happy if they opened with:

1. Love And Peace Or Else
2. Sunday Bloody Sunday
3. Bullet The Blue Sky
4. Running To Stand Still
5. City Of Blinding Lights

This is great news!!!!!!

What I love about hearing stuff like this is that it means it keeps the band interested in what they do. I've seen U2 every time they've come to Australia and I've seen them fresh and loving to play - Lovetown when they changed the setlist every night - and Zoo - when they were going through the motions and following a well trodden script (well by the time they got to Australia, it was!).

Bring more of it on!!!!!!

I hope they will keep LAPOE as an opener! COBL is not working for me really, it should be in the middle set, there where it is now. They need something bad-ass like Mofo (yay!) or Zoo Station and LAPOE is a good choice! I'm also very curious how MW modified, how the ending solo changed. Some informations?

Just a great show tonight.

A Coldplay song leading into that Arcade Fire tune and then the Everyone bit before they killed the lights.

Edge and Larry walked around the heart pointing spotlights at the crowd before the start of LAPOE. It just blew us away and is such a better opening than COBL (was there opening night in S.D.). LAPOE just jumps starts the show at a whole another level. Great, great energy and Bono in character. Great to see Larry front and center. We were right outside the heart in front of Bono pounding the those drums.

On Bono's head bandana, he had written COEXIST (with the various religious symbols - the Jewish star of David in the 'X' spot, the Christian cross as the 'T'.). The words 'COEXIST' again appeared projected on the walls of the arena towards the end of the show.

I looked at my watch and it was almost 30 minutes before another tune from HTDAAB was played and they walked off the stage exactly an hour into the show which felt very early. It was like they were taking a mini break...not like they were coming back for an encore. There was full 5 minute repeat of the 'Everyone' recording for before the band appeared again.

Other notables about the show:

During Mysterious Ways the curtain of lights showed a cartoon girl wearing a bikini bottom but without the top. For a good portion of the song, it just showed her upper half - clearly showing nipples. A little bizarre for a U2 show. Also, during Mysterious Ways, Bono pulled a girl version of McPhisto out of the Bomb Cellar and escorted her around the heart..towards the end she put on a little of her own dance routine.....he asked tongue in cheek for the Edge to get started with the next song to "get me out of this".

At the end, before the start of 40, Bono dedicated the show to our Holy Father, great humanitarian, peacemaker of the world (paraphrasing here)..."wearer of the Fly shades." Touching and amusing. At the end of the show, he took off his own cross, kissed it and hung on the mic stand.

The crowd begged for them to return and booed when they didn't...a combination of the main show being so short that no one realised that this had been the encore and that it took a full 5 minutes before the lights came on.

I loved Monday's show but this really had a great, great feel to it. Missed the old songs but this was only a few minutes shorter. Altogether it was just great to see that they're willing to change it around or even upside down and backwards. Just a few shows in and these guys are really getting into it. I can't wait to see how it develops over the next few months.

I'm still blown away that they started with LAPOE!!:applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

I'm thrilled to see "New Years Day" is still on their setlist ....
I hope it's played in Chicago and New York , but if U2 are planning to remove it soon .... then they should do it now, so they can bring it back by the time May gets here.....

Really sad that Electric Co. is on rotation but Pride appears to be permanent. Don't they know the crowd reaction they are getting from a relatively unknown song is awesome? Don't they realize Pride hasn't changed one bit in almost 20 years and is boring as all hell?

<sigh>

As I'm only going to one show on this leg, I REALLY hope this isn't the setlist for San Jose 1. I sure as hell don't need to hear Electric Co. AND An Cat Dubh AND Gloria, but it sure would be nice to hear one of them...

It's just odd to play three tracks from one album one night, and none two shows later.

Just saw the setlist, and i think its pretty cool the way they changed it. I am a bootleg addict, so its awesome that each concert so far have something new and interesting.

also i think i prefer the COBL/VERTIGO opener! [/B]
 I'm in total agreement with you on this one COBL/VERTIGO is a great opening salvo and i hope they play this on the
14th June in Manchester,i also hope they throw a few oldies in as well.

New Years day won't go - it was the USA breakthrough song, so it means a lot to the band (and their wallets) in America. It will stay until at least the start of leg 2 IMO

Elevation....Are they trying to see how long before the fans get up and leave durring this song?

Fuck me - LAPOE opened!!

(I said that myself not too long ago)

Same here. Always thought it would be LAPOE or COBL. Both excellent choices, IMO.

it's just my impression or:

1. Love And Peace Or Else
2. Sunday Bloody Sunday
3. Bullet The Blue Sky
4. Running To Stand Still
5. City Of Blinding Lights

in the end or in the beggining of the show they just are the same songs? some of this days we will make a thread about that solo that was a second longer as a big diference between shows!
i want new songs???
where are out of control, ultraviolet, oots, exit, i will folow, the unforgetable fire, seconds, stay faraway so close, kite, walk on, mlk,Love Is Blindness,If You Wear That Velvet Dress ,Please, Mofo, All I Want Is You ?
and what about some song they never play live as drowning man, acrobat, mother of disappeared, Another Time, Another Place, Red Hill Mining Town, Heartland, Rejoice, With A Shout (Jerusalem), in a life time?
they could make a set list so much better and the could change much more between sets, i am just tired to listen the same old songs and we have to ask for more.

At least it is different. Very cool in my opinion. Although it's been said all day to this point, LAPOE is a great opener and follows in the tradition of a rocking "set the tone" ala Elevation, Zoo Station, MOFO. . .

But Headache, you are accurate in stating it is One setlist (but it's not the same). (Give or take a few rotating songs)

The loss of Boy materisal i supsetting--hope its nit a permanent change!

i hope the Boy stuff is played at least every 2 out of 3 shows because to me those were the best performances outside of Yahweh/Love and Peace or Else

Well I got a ticket! They were still available at 8:30 from the ticket office. I don’t know if it’s because the room is so much larger than SD but there seemed to be a lack of energy - Especially in the back. I looked around a few times in SD and the place was rocking both nights. Not the same tonight. Love & Peace did not have the same opening impact as COBL with the tons of confetti and curtain of lights. In fact by the time they did play it, it was missing something. Instead of the blasts, perfectly timed so far, they just sent a trickle of it down from the rafters during the intro. The entire 'Boy Set' was dropped. Streets seemed to be played too early. Bono bought on a very cool 'Mrs. Machpisto' during the Zoo set. She almost stole the show. Overall they played well but there were a few technical difficulties. U2 10/10 – Always – The audience 7/10.

Just my opinion: When you go to for example a dave matthews show, you have no idea what he will play, if he is playing 3 nights in a row you can go to all 3 and not hear the same song twice...literally. he didnt even play his hit single at that time. U2's catalogue is far vaster the Dave matthews'...so why cant they just play a whole bunch of stuff. i never understood the in stone setlist. clapton did it his last tour, although he didnt change anything night to night which really confused me because its clapton. i still will enjoy the songs no matter how many times i hear them live though.

I hope LaPoE was a better opening that COBL... sorry I just thought it was a bit weak at San Diego.

I think the lyrics of COBL makes sense as an opener - but the song should be further in the set after the band bonds with the audience for a bit. So I'm glad they moved it in.

LAPOE was what I imagined the opener to be initially, and that it would be the LAP tour. :) However, since it is such a highlight, I wonder if it should be further in the setlist, and perhaps Vertigo opening.

you must realize, this is the most rotation we've seen by U2 since 1989. and it's only been three shows! they added two more songs last night. they rehearsed over 50, and i honestly believe that all 50 will at some point make it into the setlists.

 U2

you read my mind, as I am the same.

I think the setlist was awesome. Is it my favorite of the three nights? No, SD II was better. But I LOVED the fact they rotated songs in the set.

Only the third night, and they got a new opener! Second song is "Sunday Bloody Sunday?" They added two new songs and had naked girls dancing on screens? Is this u2? I like it, keep it up boys

I think they are just trying to get all the songs right, I think their best performances so far have been of the "BOY" songs, maybe that's why they left them all out last night. They'll be back.

Sounded like a great concert.

What does everyone think about having LAPOE as an opener, but then jumping right into Vertigo? I really feel that Vertigo's ideal spot in the set-list is #2... It belongs to an early spot in the show IMO because it's so energetic and will set the house on fire right away. Then again I haven't seen the show yet so...

I like changing stuff around, but for the sake of having a good flowing set-list, I think it's good to have a few things fixed here and there (like the opening songs) and than mix it up in between.
