Rocker Bono "to Give Talk in City"

By Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo

CAMPAIGNING rock legend Bono will be invited to Liverpool to talk to city youngsters about world poverty.

Capital of Culture chiefs are to approach the U2 frontman after teenagers called for him to appear in the city.

Artistic director Robyn Archer revealed the request at ameeting with Liverpool businessmen and women at the Tate this morning.

During a question and answer session at the 08 Business Connect event, she said: "We've recently set up a Youth Advisory Group for Capital of Culture which is so instructive. It's fantastic to sit around and have lunch with these tremendous kids.

"They want things like a permanent skateboard park and a music festival of their own, as well as a dry club because they love music so much.

"I also asked them who they wanted to come to Liverpool and they said Bono, to talk about world poverty. He's only over the water after all."

Culture chiefs have now confirmed they are to invite the Irish star to visit the city. Adate has not yet been suggested.

The breakfast meeting also heard about proposals for a new performance to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery next year, which could then be toured in America.

Writer Jimmy McGovern is involved in discussions and a top artistic director from Chicago has been brought over to hear details.

There are also plans to link up with Quebec city in 2008, the 400th anniversary of the French-Canadian city, and to get artists involved in the 2008 Knowsley Flower Show.

Ms Archer added: "Over the next two years the city will be bringing to you lots of ideas, and I hope a lot of pleasure."

Council leader Warren Bradley told the meeting he pledged to listen to what people who lived and worked in Liverpool wanted from Capital of Culture.

He said: "Without us listening, we're not going to achieve what we want to do which is have the best ever Capital of Culture and legacy beyond 2008."

be great to see bono in liverpool once again :)

if he agrees to it is another matter

How embarrassing for Bono to constantly be put in situations like this, when he's publicly invited to help with a good cause. If he accepts, then he runs the risk of looking like an activist-for-everything, which he has said he doesn't WANT to be, and if he declines, then he disappoints people.

I wish people would invite him privately, then wait to announce it after he accepts. I don't think it's fair, or polite, to extend public invitations like this.

My bet is Bono turns it down.

I disagree with the way this issue is handeled, it's very impolite and unrespectful to make a public statement like this without having received any confirmation, reaction or acceptance from Bono or his people. Even though I think talking to young people about these issues is generally a good thing, I don't think Bono should accept everything that people propose to him, because people tend to make use of people like him for publicity more than for the real causes he stands for. Being put in a situation like this can always turn out to be embarrassing, but I guess this is a risk someone like Bono is opening up to by doing what he does.

I agree. We've been inviting him privately for the past decade and every year are turned down. 1) this is disrespectful and seems like a pretty immature way to go about it and 2) it would be a shame that he went simply because he wouldn't want to feel guilty, leaving all the other groups who've been inviting him the proper way left out
