This is info for the United Kingdom.

In 1998 the Limited Edition version was the 33rd highest selling album for the year, selling 383,000 copies in 9 weeks, and the normal version sold 571,000 copies in 8 weeks to end up at #21. Together thats 954,000 copies in 1998, and if combined would have been #8 for the year after just 9 weeks. I also found out the normal edition sold 104,000 copies in 2000, and I should be able to find out the the totals for other years soon.
But in all, thats a VERY good effort for the 80-90 compilation.
The same source tells me Pop sold 370,000 copies in 1997 in UK. It also says HTDAAB 855,000 for year 2004 and so far 208,000 for 2005.

Thanks for saving me the trouble of posting this info. Here's some more :

The Joshua Tree was the 115th best selling album of 2001 (would have sold 100K - minimum). Best of 1980-90 normal version was the 120th best selling album of 2001 (also would have sold 100K -minimum). Best of 1990-2000 / B sides was the 160th best selling album of 2003 (RHCP's Californacation was 162nd with sales of 115K).

Also, in 2000 U2 were the 25th best selling albums artist with total album sales of 720K in UK. In 2001 they were 13th with 1.03M. In 2002 they were 16th with 820K. I'm not sure about the figure in 2003 - probably about 50th with around 350K.

In 2004 they were the 10th best selling albums artist in UK with total sales of 1.09M. This means their back catalogue sold 235K in total if we take the figure of 855K for HTDAAB (my calculations say that HTDAAB sold 860K last year - which would mean their back catalogue sold 240K).

PS - from 1998-2002 U2 were the 8th best selling album artist in UK with overall album sales of 4.1M. Here's the top 10 :

1. Robbie Williams - 9.7M
2. The Corrs - 5.8M
3. Westlife - 5.1M
4. Madonna - 5.0M
5. The Beatles - 4.7M
6. Steps - 4.5M
7. Shania Twain - 4.1M
8. U2 - 4.1M
9. Travis - 3.9M
10. Stereophonics - 3.7M

:)

Also, Best of 1980-90 (must be normal version) was the 33rd best selling catalogue album of 2004 in UK with sales of around 70K. Considering that it needed to sell 94K to be amongst the top 200 selling albums, I would say that's pretty impressive.

PS - U2 Go Home : Live From Slane Castle was the 29th best selling DVD of 2004. :)

More UK info...
In 1999 the standard edition sold 210,672 copies. The limited edition had just fallen off the charts by now so it probably sold another 15,000 in 1999 at a very rough guess.

In 2003 it didnt make the year end 200 but no. 200 sold 95,000 for the year so i'd guess about 85,000 for the Best Of. And in 2001 I havent got a sales figure yet but should do soon but I think it was about 117,000.
I will find out 2001-2002 hopefully in the next few days.

This is what I know so far

1998: combined 954,000
1999: combined 226,000 (est)
2000: 104,000
2001: 117,000 (est)

2003: 85,000 (est)
2004: 70,000

2003: 85,000 (est)
2004: 70,000

Yes, I agree with all these figures.

BTW - I forgot to mention this before, but in 2002 Best of 80-90 (normal version) was the 166th best selling album of 2002. I estimate that it sold about 110K (overall artist album sales increased by 4.06% in 2002 - from 2001).

So estimated total sales of Best of 1980-90 in UK are now :

1998: combined 954,000
1999: combined 226,000 (est)
2000: 104,000
2001: 117,000 (est)
2002: 110,000 (est) (correctly certified 5xPlat on Nov 8th 2002 with total combined sales to this date of about 1.5M)
2003: 85,000 (est)
2004: 70,000 (est)
Total: 1,666,000 - but this figure is probably now about 1.7M. So should be 6xPlat (1.8M) by end of 2006!

Time to update these a bit, due to new information.
2001 saw it sell 142,000. So...

1998: combined 954,000
1999: combined 226,000 (est)
2000: 104,000
2001: 142,000
2002: 110,000 (est)
2003: 85,000 (est)
2004: 70,000
2005: ??? 40,000 so far (est)

Total sales around 1,731,000. Nearly 6 times platinum!

Time to update this considering the end of year sales info for 2005 in United Kingdom....

So now...

1998: 954,000
1999: 226,000 (est)
2000: 104,000
2001: 142,000
2002: 110,000 (est)
2003: 85,000 (est)
2004: 70,000
2005: 100,000

Total: 1,791,000 or thereabouts
Should be turning 6x platinum right about now... that is if they combine the two versions. When Best Of 1980-1990 released two two versions charted separately, not sure about how the certifications worked, though...

I've gained access to most of its Australian run too, and it has spent over 200 weeks in the top 100!!!! AND was on the end of Year top 100 for five years in a row!
Here are its positions:

1998 - #6 (approx 275,000)
1999 - #28 (130,000?)
2000 - #69 (50,000?)
2001 - #71 (50,000?)
2002 - #66 (50,000?)

Like so many other countries (USA, Canada etc) the Australian database for Gold and Platinum is WAY out of date. They still have Best of 1980-1990 at 5x platinum (350k, got this certification Jan 1999) when i KNOW it has sold around 600k. They need to re-do ATYCLB too, that is at 4x platinum (280k) when it's sold well over 400k in reality.

V.interesting info CVT...

Regarding the UK sales of Best Of 80-90 : yes, those figures are definitely correct &, in fact, you seem to have pretty much ignored sales of the 2CD version from 2000-05. In 2002-03 it actually spent 31 wks on the top 200 with 3 wks on the top 75, so that must amount to about 80k in those 2 years alone. I would actually estimate that sales of both versions added together are now close to 1.850m.

Also, regarding the UK certification system for both versions : since sometime in early March 2001 & due to a change in chart rules, both the certifications for the 2 versions have definitely been added together... which is why it was immediately certified 4xPlat from 2xPlat at this time.

Also, what do you think worldwide sales of both versions added together would have amounted to in 2005 ? (i'm thinking 800k-1m : 300k in US ? + 100k in UK etc....)

What was that you say? The limited edition with B-sides actually came back and charted too? Was not aware of this!
And yes I would guess that Best of 80-90 would have sold about a million copies out of the 3 million for the entire back catalogue... It seems to be far and away the best selling of their back catalogue. I'd say that Best of 90-00 would have probably sold at least 400k too.
