He's a smaller Nik Grossmann (another slow guy who blocks shots and does nothing else), and this is likely setting up them giving him five years at 4 million per year with a full NTC. If not, it's a rental that doesn't help because he fucking blows. And they gave up a second round pick in 2015, a very deep draft.

They're the most out-of-touch organization in hockey and either don't understand or refuse to acknowledge advanced statistics. Deciding a guy is a good defender because he blocks a lot of shots is decades-old nonsense. He has the 9th worst Corsi in the league. He's awful.

If he re-signs he will be a huge steal. Vanek is clearly in it for the dough though. He will be going to the highest bidder as the top winger in an otherwise barren market, and that is probably what hindered his trade deadline value.

I assume NYI had him release that propaganda statement about being willing to re-sign with the team he was traded to if they were good. That's BS, Vanek will see the FA market and will receive one of the larger $8 mil contracts if you ask me (cap inflation -- this is the best year to have your contract expire on and be a top FA).
