Surprised The Okk! haven't shown up yet. In the right mood it's lovely. Most of the time it's interminably long and boring but in the right mood it's great.

Damn it, I checked this twice on a calculator, no idea how I managed to fuck that up.

Lemme fix...

Oh this has happened to me before as well. Thanks for the new scores, I have updated your list.

Yeah, I expected a couple of down-ballot votes. I think it's a nice album, and it was in the 15-30 portion of my list, but it's far from their best and there was a lot of good music this past year.

They're going to be pretty high on my list. I'll post mine one of these days.

It's been great reading all the lists and descriptions. I definitely missed a few albums this year.

I'm listening to Lambchop's last album Mr M and I really want to get more into this band. They released an electronic record this year.

Almost put Danny Brown at #1 too. The top four really are all about equally great to me.

Hip hop is never very well represented when we do this. This year might be an exception with Tribe and Kanye doing well.

I forgot to even put Schoolboy Q in my HM's. He could fit on the actual list somewhere too but I doubt he's getting many votes

Wish Untitled Unmastered was getting more love. If it were packaged/labeled differently, it would have received more attention outside of his fanbase. Not a bad song anywhere near that album.

It's getting some love, though. It's made about half of the lists so far. I think it's a combination of packaging/short running time/perception that it's only a collection of B-sides.

Another underrated "outtakes" album that has made even fewer lists is EMOTION Side-B. Not as strong as Untitled Unmastered, but it has some fantastic songs in it.

I only didn't include E.MO.TION Side B on my longlist because it was marketed as a companion EP (whereas Untitled Unmastered was never labeled an EP by TDE) and I was trying to keep those separate from LPs. I enjoy the fuck out of that project.

It's a funny comparison, but I think the To Pimp a Butterfly and E.MO.TION recording sessions were two of the most productive of the decade, right up there with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy/G.O.O.D. Fridays.

I'll have to add the All Delighted People/Age of Adz sessions (also including You Are The Blood from the Dark is the Night compilation) to the list. But yeah, totally agree.

Alright let's do this.

1. Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas: Mariner - 13
2. Alcest: Kodama - 13
(Turnover: Humblest Pleasures EP)
3. Memoryhouse: Soft Hate - 10
4. Sylvaine: Wistful - 10
5. Mint Julep: Broken Devotion - 8
6. Esben and the Witch: Older Terrors - 7
7. Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place: You’re Doomed. Be Nice. - 7
8. The Hotelier: Goodness - 6
9. Hideous Towns: Disquiet Living - 6
10. Flyying Colours: Mindfullness - 6
11. Fjørt: Kontakt - 4
12. Horror My Friend: Stay In, Do Nothing - 4
13. Somos: First Day Back - 2
14. Yumi Zouma: Yoncalla - 2
15. Crying: Beyond the Fleeting Gales - 2

The rest of my top fifty as it stands right now:

16. Big Ups: Before a Million Universes
17. Sulk: No Illusions
18. Helms Alee: Stillicide
Tiny Deaths: Night Flowers EP
19. The Blessed Isles: Straining Hard Against the Strength of Night
20. Oak Pantheon: In Pieces
21. Astronoid: Air
22. Half/cut: Ecco Locale
23. Black Mountain: IV
24. Russian Circles: Guidance
Bloodhounds on My Trail: Haunted Isles EP
25. Heron Oblivion: Heron Oblivion
26. Mermaidens: Undergrowth
27. School of Seven Bells: SVIIB
28. Nite Jewel: Liquid Cool
29. Male Bonding: Headache
30. Balance and Composure: Light We Made
31. Shana Falana: Here Comes the Wave
32. Mono: Requiem for Hell
Major Leagues: Dream States EP
33. Haelos: Full Circle
34. Beverly: The Blue Swell
35. Puro Instinct: Autodrama
36. White Lung: Paradise
37. The Morningside: Yellow
38. Lotus Thief: Gramarye
39. Pity Sex: White Hot Moon

42. Borknagar: Winter Thrice
43. Kokomo: Monochrome Noise Love

45. Eagulls: Ullages
46. Fallujah: Dreamless
47. DIIV – Is the Is Are
48. Angel Olsen: My Woman
49. Animal Flag: LP
50. The Laurels: Sonicology

And these albums I still need to consider more before slotting them into my final list for RYM (or just keeping them in an honourable mentions section), but I know they won't rate high enough to affect my top 15 here:

Bossk: Audio Noir
Cairiss: Fall
Civil Civic: The Test
Creative Adult: Fear of Life
Crystal Castles: Amnesty
Darkher: Realms
Elephant Tree: Elephant Tree
Forndom: Daudra Dura
Hammock: Everything and Nothing
Oathbreaker: Rheia
Sugar Army: Beast
Yndi Halda: Under Summer
Yuck: Stranger Things

In general, I've found 2016 to be consistent but not especially strong - certainly not compared to 2015, which will be hard to beat. My top four would hold their own against any other year, and the other albums in my top ten are also impressive. But I found 11-40 very hard to separate. In other years 11-20 would be further down, perhaps even low 30s, but on the other hand if I had to put anything from 31-40 in the lower reaches of my top 15 I would be cool with it. Like I say, it's a good level of consistency, but one that rarely touches greatness for me.

Finding out that there's a band called Mint Julep made my day. I hope they come from Kentucky.

I didn't disqualify Emotion Side B, but it just missed the cut for me. Definitely in my Top 20 though.
