A security guard armed with a sidearm is no match for a man with an AR-15 who intends to slaughter people. Even a police officer with an AR-15 is no match. You effectively require two or more armed guards in this situation to guarantee an attack can be repelled, and that’s while willing to sacrifice the life of one of the guards. A single guard is a single point of failure, where an assailant with a premeditated plan can easily kill said armed guard.
Not to mention, massacres are incredibly rare. Should every house of every type of worship need one to two armed guards for their one to two services a week because of the one bad apple? Let’s just say $25 an hour for five hours 50 weeks for two guards twice a week. Now let’s handwave and say 40,000 houses of worship and all of the sudden armed protection from a one in 14.6 million odds of a gunman showing up to your house of worship to slaughter (based upon a once a year occurrence) becomes a billion dollar industry.

Every business, school, place of worship and community center should train their staff on what to do in the event of an evacuation, and what to do in the event you can't evacuate. Facilities of all sorts should do whatever they reasonably can to "harden". Training on what to do in the case of an event, how to respond to trauma situations, etc. should become the norm (and already are).
Just because they shouldn't HAVE to do this shit doesn't change the reality that they do, and that nothing is changing any time soon.
Beyond that? It's not financially feasible for every facility to have trained armed guards who are capable of taking down an intruder with a semiautomatic weapon.
And oh by the way? Casinos are swarming with armed guards. Didn't stop the massacre at Mandalay Bay.
We need stronger gun control. We need to end this madness. We need the younger generations, who are most directly affected by this, to stop the apathy and go out there and VOTE.
They can end this. It can all go away. But they need to show up, and they need to do it now before it's too late.

I literally saw somebody who is maybe 22-23 on FB commenting on a post of a friend of mine (turns out it’s her cousin) saying she doesn’t vote because “I could learn about it but I don’t really care, I don’t like being told/ordered to vote by anybody and it doesn’t change anything anyway.” So there you have it.

I think Florida, of all crazy places, will be very telling.
If Parkland can't drive out the young vote en masse and give the Democrats a victory, then we're truly fucked.

That bastard murdered a 97 year old Holocaust survivor. Most of the people killed were elderly. There were two brothers in their 50's who had disabilities.

I also read that this happened at a time while there was a ceremony going on for a baby. Thankfully none of the children who were there were hurt, but the terror they witnessed, I can't imagine.
And continuing on with news of shootings, just saw a headline that a student was shot and killed at a high school after an argument with another classmate. Nobody else was hurt or targeted, it seems. But yeah.
(As an aside, when there's a story of a teenager shooting somebody at schools, I hear people talk about how it's a sign of what's wrong with this generation. I wonder how those people explain all the mass shootings that have been committed by middle-aged men?)
There's a woman running for secretary of state here in Iowa who, if she wins, has some great ideas on how to encourage voter registration, especially among young people. I'm hoping she gets elected.

The same sort of hatred and bigotry caused the Holocaust. So inaccurate reporting really doesn't seem to be relevant to that. Hatred and bigotry lives. Yes some people are mentally ill. But some just hate anyone who isn't their kind.

I'm not trying to make any kind of negative comment about the media on this, but it is true she wasn't a holocaust survivor, but it's already out there as a highly shared Facebook/Social Media post that she was. That's the kind of "fake" news that doesn't do any good, and 5 minutes of fact checking with a relative could've avoided. It was People Magazine, though, so what do you expect?

Goddamn, the stories from those victims are haunting. So many lives changed, and yet nothing continues to be done to stop it. The lead poisoning was an important point that I fully agree needs a lot more attention.
I like how they go back decades, too, to show that this sadly isn't some kind of new phenomenon, or something that people claim is only something that's wrong with "kids today". I'd love to make it so every last member of the GOP were forced to read this article, and had to look at those photos, every single day when they went to work.

Just got an e-mail about an event for an interfaith memorial for the victims sometime in the near future, and at the end of the e-mail it asked us not to share details of the event on social media, and to RSVP so they can add our names to a list that will be given to security. This just got me so depressed.
A local Jewish Synagogue hosted an interfaith prayer night on Monday night. It was advertised on Facebook. My wife and I went, and kind of wondered how well attended it would be. Traffic was backed up for 10 minutes getting off the off ramp (just to be clear to those on the coast who laugh at 10 minute delays - we NEVER have traffic delays here). The place was PACKED. The huge parking lot was full, and basically every neighborhood street in a 3 block radius around the synagogue was lined with cars. The sanctuary and social hall were packed to standing room only. I have no idea how many turned out exactly, but it was a massive community gathering. Leaders from various Christian denominations - along with several rabbis and representatives from a couple local mosques all spoke. It felt powerful and like the exact kind of response I wish our President and his party were capable of giving.

There was a man on CNN who can't find his 22 year old son who was there. He tracked his phone using an app and the phone is in the club. It was so heartbreaking to listen to that I just can't even say. I'm so sick of this, and it's never going to stop. The morons supposedly representing us won't do anything about it. And the ones who try to do something are obstructed at every turn.

Even if you rid of it. Removing every gun in America is not going to go well. Would everybody that owned immediately become a criminal?
