Lucifer's Hands - Song Discussion

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
It was all going so well then at 2:27 the band look at each other and make a decision to come back later to come up with something to add, and they never do. A minute of something, anything between there and 3.25 would make this an album worthy song, hence it's inclusion on a bonus disc. There's a major momentum loss on SOI when SFS comes on and a decent LF would have fit perfectly there imho.

I just worked on a Womanfish edit of Lucifer's Hands. I felt like the bridge just killed the thing. So I cut out a huge chunk, taking out that stupid lyric about the poor breaking bread and the rich man eating alone (my GOD it sounds like a David Brent lyric!!!)
I cut it down by 40 seconds and it totally changes the song.

If anyone could help me with instructions on sharing, or if you have an email you don't mind sharing, i can send to ya

lyrics

thank you very much for the lyric:up:

Punk rock party in a suburban home
Everybody's famous here, but nobody's known
We got no music 'cos the speaker's blown... apart

The spirit is moving through a seaside town
I'm born again to the latest sound
New wave, airwaves(?), swimming around my heart, uh huh.

You no longer got a hold on me
By Lucifer's hands
You no longer got a hold on me
You're no longer in control of me
I am...

(something) An enemy's spin from an inky page
St. John Devine is going to take the stage
I can tell (or I can't doubt) your talent is your rage, I'm in..

(this verse is really tricky to decipher, but I swear he sings "the player is on fire...")

You no longer got a hold on me
By Lucifer's hands
You no longer got a hold on me
You're no longer in control of me
I am...

Woah.. yes I can change the world
Woah.. yes I can change the world
The fool? breaking breaking bread is made out of stone
The rich man wont eat he is eating alone
That's easy
I can't change the world in me

You no longer got a hold on me
By Lucifer's hands
You no longer got a hold on me
You're no longer in control of me
I am...

Thanks David. I reckon I can help with that middle verse - I'll post here when I have had another listen.

Update from the booklet - Interesting reference to NME...

Punk rock party in a suburban home
Everybody's famous here, but nobody's known
We got no music cos the speaker's blown apart

The spirit's moving through a seaside town
I'm born again to the latest sound
New wave airwaves swilling around my heart

You no longer got a hold on me
I'm out of Lucifer's hands
You no longer got a hold on me
You're no longer in control of me
I am

The NME is spitting from an inky page
St. John Divine is gonna take the stage
At the talent show where your talent is your rage
I'm in

Prayers of fire on a raindog night
Young men see visions beyond sound or sight
The Velvets beginning to see the light
Amen

You no longer got a hold on me
I'm out of Lucifer's hands
You no longer got a hold on me
You're no longer in control of me
I am

Yes I can change the world
Yes I can change the world

The poor breaking breaking bread that's made out of stone
The rich man wont eat, he's eating, alone
That's easy
But I can't change the world
In me

You no longer got a hold on me
I'm out of Lucifer's hands
You no longer got a hold on me
You're no longer in control of me
I am

The song sounds lyrically like a brother to Miracle and This is Where You Can Reach Me, right? :)

Kind of. I think this is more abstract, while those two are about specific moments and bands.

This seems to be a hazy memory of parties and the formation of U2 out of new wave and the kind of bands that were part of that movement. Even though the Velvet Underground are referenced, I don't feel as though it is specifically for them.

I havent read thro all the posts on here...so appologise if this has been discussed...but has anyone noticed the midlle 8 simmilarity to Red Hill Mining Town?

At the talent show where your talent is your rage
I'm in

At first I thought it was "At the talent show where your talent is your age"

- rage works better perhaps, but I that Bono was poking fun at the idea that they had gotten to old to be taken serious.

I gotta say, I've listened to this quite a bit, and I like it much more now. It still doesn't really come off as a finished song, but I love the sound of it. Reminds me of Zoo Station a bit.

The intro to LH is wicked. As is the rest of the song.

If they just worked a little more on the middle section, this could of easily earned it's place on the album.

PS. I prefer this to TCB. :reject:
