I'm a computer technician and for the first time ever my own computer has a virus! :reject: I really have no clue what it is or how I got it. Anytime I try to do anything with my Yahoo Widgets, I start getting threat notifications. I've never heard of people getting viruses from legit Yahoo Widgets (I just have the local weather and an analog clock), but whatever, I've uninstalled/deleted/cleaned the registry of anything. I can't reinstall it either, or even go to widgets.yahoo.com. Oh well, I can live without them.

But a computer technician getting a virus? I'm a failure :scream: :tsk:

My bf is an MIS worker in a bank and he's somehow managed to have gotten viruses a couple of times before.

The bright side of it all you are far more knowledgeable than some when it comes to dealing with the viruses

It's not you, it's the software! (Always blame others first  )

I might as well take this opportunity to finally upgrade to Windows Vista Business, but I'm really lazy and don't want to spend the time downloading all five install discs and then burning the ISO files.

The virus is now gone, but it makes me nervous not knowing where it came from.

Replace "sometimes" with "all the time" when you're a resident. :yuck:

Mmmmmmmm.........Mac........ I don't have one, but I'd love to....

It says I have a VirusBurst. I looked this up and it's one of those spyware programs that's actually malware. Fine, accept I've never heard of this before and the only anti-virus/spyware program I use is Symantec. The only exes I download are totally legit and I rarely even browse to websites other than here, two other forums, and some news and weather pages.

Anyway, it originally popped up regarding the Yahoo Widgets installer and uninstaller exe files. But this is a legit program and those are the legit executables. I removed any trace of the program and every time I tried to download and reinstall it, Symantec would pop up again and delete the exe. I just disabled Symantec and reinstalled the program and my widgets, enabled Symantec, and it seems calm.

For whatever reason, I think Symantec is just psycho and I didn't have a virus. I'm going to reinstall Symantec. Maybe that will help. :der:

:nerd:

My wok Mac is an Intel iMac, but this is my laptop which is Windows b/c I use it for "PC-ish" stuff (don't have Mac versions or comparable software for Macs).

Yea, anti-spyware/malware does tend to get over protective, so maybe it wasnt a virus after all.

Still, I wouldnt trust yahoo with my life. :| Ive never used my yahoo email for anything, yet I get spam. A LOT of spam.

I dont know much about macs, all I know if theyre evil for not having a right-click. . I had a hell of a problem on my old comp with something called "toolbar 888". anyway, not long after the comp went kaput. (a combination of my brother messing with it and maybe that) so ive been compensated with a laptop. (part that, part b-day present. )

I bet even Gates gets viruses.

You should never go to the darkside, even just a little.

Unfortunately, my job and the administration of our university's networks depends on it. :(

If I was so inclined, I'd just go back to Linux.

Symantec is back at trying to remove my widgets

I never quite understood why Linux isnt used on a wider scale.
I mean, its free, virus free and just as good as windows. My brother swears by it, he'd have my laptop wiped and linux'ed if it was up to him.

*innocent* who, me?

Id like it, if it wasnt for the fact my brother has it set up so I cant install things. ¬_¬ I just mean like, schools for example. They could save so much on what they spend on windows etc. for their PC's, and have it better spent on other...stuff. like tennis balls. ;D

Yeah MooMoo, we had it at my college and the Computer Science club has Linuxfest where they install it free on anyone's computer if you want it. They can also setup a dual boot so you can have Windows and Linux if you don't want to switch.

I hate how whenever there's a computer problem, and I'm having problems fixing it, SOMEBODY has to say something like, "Didn't you study computer science in college?"

Shut up.

Jerks. :madspit:

I like when people say that to me b/c then I can be a smartass back and say I never have studied computer science

I feel for you, Liesje. I'm computer literate, and recently had my Windows XP desktop completely taken down by a weird virus.

It reminded me of that Win32.sasser one from a few years back that would restart your system automatically after a while, except this one was horrible, malicious, and impossible to remove. I think I had a hard drive die at the same time as well

Anyway sometimes you just have to say "fuck it" and reformat. Luckily all my music is on another hard drive - not the one with the Windows partition.

So it's been a few days and Symantec has stopped trying to maim Yahoo Widget Engine.

Canadiens, I was fixing my uncle's laptop yesterday b/c it wouldn't boot. I had to laugh a little inside b/c it had a sasser worm for years and finally got so corrupted it wouldn't boot at all. I'd forgotten about the sasser worm (or perhaps repressed the memory of dealing with thousands of virus infected student computers in the span of two weeks).

I installed this weather update for my PC years ago and it was a virus and every time i tried deleting it , it kept coming back.

But normally i only get a virus from downloading porn.

:shh: They do have a right click, just not an ugly two button mouse

Anyway, I'm so disappointed in you Lies :tsk: It's all good now though?
